Hunter Dickinson says goodbye to Michigan
He is gonna get his degree after bailing on us and still make us pay for it despite getting millions of dollars in money from another school.
He played 3 years at Michigan when he could've left after one.
It's wild, no one says Trey Burke "bailed" after his sophomore year. He only have Michigan 2.
No one even says Spike Albrecht "bailed" and he went to another school...and in the B1G.
Hunter played 3 excellent years at Michigan...he's moving on. And guess what, wipe those tears, call the homies for a night out, and you too can move on.
...for all of you that are in your feelings, this is for you - get well soon!
Lots of sour grapes here but I'm totally good with whatever he does. He's done a lot for the program and is getting his degree here.
I'm really only smelling sauerkraut here, the grapes are fresh and sweet.
Can sum up my feelings in two words from Tombstone's Curly Bill. Well, bye..
I’m not a big Hunter fan, but that message speaks volumes. It was very thoughtful.
Hunter,
You were dope. I'll miss you. You should go down as one of Michigans all time greats.
Fuck the haters. Good luck wherever you end up unless you're playing Michigan.
Much Love and Respect,
Darker Blue
You should go down as one of Michigans all time greats.
How many go on your list of "all time greats"? Is Hunter top 100? Definitely. Top 10? Nope.
Probably top 25 based on accolades and accomplishments
Top 25 in accolades and accomplishments? I was surprised that there have only been 17 All-Americans in the history of Michigan basketball and yes, that number includes Hunter. But, that was his freshman season. There certainly are more accomplished players that are not on that list: Juwan Howard and Terry Mills for example. How about more recent players like Caris Lavert or Tim Hardaway jr?
Top 50: yes
Top 25? debatable.
I'm getting "negged" on this.
Do people really think Hunter is in the top 10 of all time Michigan basketball players?
not going to lie; this one stings a little bit.
But loved what HD did in his three years, and wish him all the success in the world at his new school, except if he plays Michigan.
Good Luck Hunter - thanks for the memories!
Then WHY are you leaving???? This feels like betrayal to me...
He's going where he can make the most money. He's not going to be an NBA player, and he will probably make way more in a year or two of NIL than he would playing intl or lower level US ball. It's a completely understandable move.
He will have graduated. Mission accomplished (play basketball and play school). Having eligibility is only one reason to stay. Maybe he just wants to get another experience. (Hard to believe the coaching would be better. Does any know if there is a better big man coach out there?) But more money and a better chance to go deeper into the NCAA tournament should about cover it.
I appreciate Hunter Dickenson. We all applauded when he decided to come to Michigan. However, making announcements on two separate days tends to feel like an attempt to get as much media attention as possible.
Good luck
1. Why is it any of your business?
Honest question, why do *YOU* feel entitled to know?
2. ...you really can't figure out why? Or at least narrow it down to 3-4 things, all of which could be true?
I understand his decision. He has every right to make that choice and with the money involved id tell him to go get paid.
That being said much like our baseball coach and now Hunter there is NO FUCKING WAY we should be losing talent like this. If I hear “Michigan money cannon” one more GOT damn time. Basketball programs arent individual franchises they are part of an athletic program and Kentucky/Kansas and their backers cant touch UM and its 2 million basketball/football fans and $100mil surplus.
“Hey boosters we are good on the next facility help us retain our players and coaches”
Good luck Hunter too bad we have made you a journeyman.
That's a very good and seemingly heartfelt message. Good luck to him.

Short your Skeeps and Ricks stocks
This would have been a nice letter to have pinned weeks ago. Michigan could have officially moved on and tried to sign some bigs. Jett, Kobe and others made their decisions quickly. Look at this situation and compare it Bacot at Carolina and see which one made the quick, decisive decision that was both best for him and his teammates. Bacot came back and started recruiting players for them. Even if Hunter was choosing other schools and was never coming back, he could’ve done this weeks ago.
It would've been nice, but he has no obligation to do so...Michigan could've moved on the minute he went into the portal. He didn't hold us hostage.
We were free to sign/recruit other players. That's a risk Hunter takes by entering the portal. It happens all the time.
On the flip side, this is a risk that Michigan felt compelled to take (waiting).
And by the way, how do you know he hadn't informed the staff that he wasn't returning awhile ago? *OR* How do you know that the staff hadn't moved on to exploring other options weeks ago?
You don't (and I don't). Because we don't, it's better to let the adults in charge of running the program...run the program.
Meh, the response from Howard and the UM Twitter account when Dickinson first entered the portal made it clear they didn't expect him to come back. I assume Howard has been recruiting bigs from the portal all along, but also had to deal with Kante not qualifying and rescinding his commitment, which further limited the team's size.
Dickinson has made it clear all along he wasn't coming back, even if it wasn't official. There was always a chance he'd come back but I assume the staff knew that was unlikely and acted accordingly. I do think Dickinson being the top big in the portal held up some other decisions from teams, though, so you could see some rapid movement in terms of commitments soon.
I harbor no hard feelings. I think thia is good for him and also good for the roster that is being assembled for next season. Looks like they are moving away from being overly dependent on a slow footed center and maybe being more athletic and faster.
FWIW, looks like he is a Jayhawks guy. UK intel is now saying that his group (and himself) loved the facilities at Kansas and UK’s underwhelmed. I also read a couple places that UK wasn’t going to compete with KU’s offer. I would prefer to have Shiebs back for the Wildcats for my fandom.
Good luck to him. I assume he's going to KU.
Wasn't the biggest fan but wish him well. Looking forward to the post-Hunter rebuild into a different style of play. Trying to win with the offense running through a big just doesn't seem to work in modern basketball. I'm somewhat of a sixers fan and you even see this with MVP Embid. He comes back and they get blown out. Embid played well but it caused the other 4 to stand around and basically watch him. I think you need a big that is primarily a defensive stopper and picks his spots on offense similar to Anthony Davis. Jokic obviously isn't that. He's an offensive unicorn that's part point guard. We'll see how far he takes the Nuggets this year.
I would love to see this as one big troll when Hunter announces he has chosen MICHIGAN.
Well done. Takes most of the sting away for me. Wish him well.
Would have been really surprised if he ended up coming back. Frustration/deficiency points aside, it started off with a bang when Hunter played a major role on a B10 championship team, then tried to carry the load for subsequent teams that were massively underwhelming as a whole. I will continue to appreciate him for those contributions and wish him well at his next destination.
Good luck to the young man. In todays crazy world of NIL it only makes dollars and cents to move on. The NBA no longer look for players of his type so he really needs to make his money in college. Crazy that we are even having either of those discussions. Personally I thought he was better when surrounded by upper classmen. He never really took hold of a leadership role. Hopefully wherever he ends up he finds what he is ultimately looking for.
Good luck to Hunter - it was a wild ride!
So, looks like some take this at face value and others see it cynically.
Since , unlike john malkovich, we can’t get inside hunter’s head only time will tell. If it’s from the heart he will see that in his actions over the next decade. And vis a versa.
So, until then I’ll remain positive and take him at his word, accept this as classy, and wish him the best.
If he proves me wrong- karma. Karma will take care of it.
I feel like we got more out of DJ Wilson than HD for some reason, even though I know that isn't true. Seems like a decent guy but I will not miss him clogging up the offense and not letting the other guys get in to an offensive rhythm. Thanks for......ummmmm....playing for Michigan Hunter....Goin out with an L in the NIT....weird career man.
If we had players who could hit open 3's you probably would have better feelings about Hunter.
Not if he continued to shoot from the elbow and from 3. His lack of physicality in the post was concerning, his lack of willingness to get other bigs in foul trouble was glaring. All he did was clog up the offense and the other 4 weren't in motion because they were waiting for a kick out that never came. He is a skilled 7'2 unathletic guy, the only place he belongs is the blocks, period. I wish him well...
Good luck Hunter. Hope you find continued success unless of course you are playing Michigan.
Good luck, Hunter!
I harbor no ill will towards Hunter for doing what is best for him. I do resent Michigan for not finding a way to keep it's best player with NIL. It makes not sense not to pull out all stops to keep an established player.
Nice message, enjoy Kansas.
