OSU fans calling for Urban to return. Does OSU do the unthinkable?

Submitted by ImRightYouKnow on November 27th, 2022 at 7:33 AM

I've been enjoying my fair share of schadenfreude after yesterday's game. But I'm seeing a lot of comments under articles/videos/tweets from bucknuts saying that they should bring Urban back, that Urban served his time, or that Urban did nothing wrong in the first place.

I think it's insane to say that Day may be on any kind of hot seat, but no other school has the luxury of a multi time national championship just waiting around for a phone call. We've also seen that colleges, have zero shame anymore about hiring troubled coaches (Lane Kiffin, Sark, Hugh Freeze, etc).

Do you think OSU is desperate enough to consider selling their soal and bringing back Urbz if Day doesn't win the big ten next year?

Michigan was facing third and 6 on their own 31 yard line in the first half, and the Buckeyes rolled the dice on a zero cover blitz up the middle. That call was all about domination not stopping Michigan on third down. Instead they rolled snake eyes when McCarthy hit Cornelius Johnson on the sideline and he eluded two tacklers -gone, turning point of the game.

Very next offensive play, McCarthy hits him again. Two plays changed the outcome of The Game.

In football and in life...it can be hard to admit that one was wrong.  Yet realizing that your first and favored approach is not working, was a bad idea, and if continued will lead to failure...is an essential key to success.

I can see the logic behind OSU/Knowles' defensive game plan.  If you slow down Michigan's run game, you win.  Michigan had looked lost passing the ball all year.  And look what Penn State got for playing two safeties--road paved by Michigan' running attack.  So...pre-game the whole thing makes sense.  Stopping M's run game is the path to victory.  Load the box.  Play single safety structure.  Michigan's pass game will not be able to beat that enough times to keep up with OSU's offense.   From the ex-ante perspective, it seems logical.

But...they failed to adjust to the realties on the actual game.   Corum is on the bench.  OSU's offense was moving the ball very well in the first half.  And Michigan was able to keep the score close...precisely because OSU was playing a lot of single safety structure.   Meyer saw it at half time and was adamant about it. But...Knowles/Day did not change course, even though that is what the nature of the first half clearly indicated.  All they all they had to do to win was limit Michigan' explosive play potential.   But they stuck to their priors and lost big.

Day is definitely on a hot seat.  I don't think he is any jeopardy of being fired but he will have to deal with a hostile media and a charged fan base.  No different than what Carr, Rich Rod, Hoke and Harbs have faced here.  If there is any interest from the NFL I would not be surprised to see him make a jump.

Never say never, but come on. Harbaugh lost his first, what ... five games against Ohio State -- and Day's record, otherwise, has been stellar. And God knows the calls for Harbaugh's head were louder than those for Day's are at this point.

I mean, yeah, if he loses two more to Michigan, maybe. But honestly, he seems like a great coach (I never know why everyone here chooses downgrade our own program by suggesting OSU sucks -- doesn't it make us look better, beating them, if they're great?), and that program, in general terms, is rolling.

It would be insane to switch out a coach who has lost two games in the past two years. We have lost two games in the past two years.

Urbz made some critical comments about OSU staff after the game which I thought were strange.  In a way, he was just beating his own chest, but it also sounded a bit like the born on 3rd base thing thinking you hit a triple, saying staff needs to earn its stripes at OSU.  Almost felt like a cheap shot on Ryan Day and his staff.  Then again, I have a hard time listening carefully to the broadcast panel since they got everything so wrong before the game.

Urban Meyer is not only slimy he's an arrogant asshole. Seriously. Went to the Jaguars and basically insisted that professional players march in line as if they were college kids. There's no way Day gets fired despite what the OSU fan base may wish for this morning and there's no way Urban Meyer gets hired back there in the future (or anywhere else for that matter). He's burned his bridges and there's simply too much baggage.

Also ... the consensus seems to be here that blame for the 2018 and 2019 losses should fall on Don Brown, not on Harbaugh. I think you could make a similar argument about Ohio State, honestly. I have no idea what OSU was doing on defense yesterday.

Yes, going zero coverage makes sense in general terms, but our first long TD -- the catch/turn/and run by CJ -- came on third and nine. Why ... why are you inviting us to throw on third and nine, with our star running back out of the game and our back-up in a cast? You're that terrified by CJ Stokes, that you need to pack the box against him on third and nine?!?

I get basing your game plan on stopping the run, but ... there has to be some ability to adapt to game situations, doesn't there? Their offense was moving well, they scored 20 points in the first half ... why not just manage the game?

Turns out coaching defense is hard, I guess, but ... good God I don't know what OSU was doing.

It's all speculation and hindsight at this point, of course, but I think that third and nine defensive call was an example of overreacting to last year's paving. They were so insistent that Michigan not run the ball at all that they sabotaged their chance to win the game. It happened on that 3rd and 9, it happened on the second long TD pass to CJ, and obviously it happened on the two long Edwards runs in the 2nd half. Absolutely inexcusable and 'unnecessary' by OSU but we'll take it. They are so full of themselves and caught up in the idea of not being paved for a second year in a row that they blew it...I mean Blue it!

I think Urban knows UM has reached a level where The Game won't be easy for him to win. Even when he was here, UM almost beat his team twice. I don't see him wanting to come back to OSU and deal with this side of Harbaugh.

Besides, OSU admins will have a hard time hiring a guy who left in shame and then was shamed in NFL for being a dick. Do you really want that guy? Another small incident at OSU under his watch, they will look like fools (they already are but...)

I don’t think they would.  Say what you will about OSU, they have generally handled the sort of inappropriate behavior that Meyer was implicated in quite well.  When he was connected to Smith they suspended him a couple of games (albeit meaningless ones) and showed him the door after the season.  I know it was labeled a “retirement”, but I think that press conference left little doubt it was a forced exit.  I don’t think the admin at OSU wants anything to do with that scum bag again.

Urban is well past his "best by" date, and there's no way that OSU can court him after all the history.  Even if they did hire him, Urban would come up with a "medical" after we thump him once or twice.

Urban's reputation is where his best-by date is a problem. In his last two stops, he's covered up for a staff member who committed domestic violence and literally kicked a player. He skipped a team flight and was caught on video hitting on a young woman in one of his bars. He's a potential embarrassment to any team that hires him.

Which doesn't mean some ethically-challenged university won't take a chance on him; I'm kind of surprised he didn't end up at LSU.
