Chris Partridge turned down Alabama linebacker coach offer
via Tom VanHaaran on Twitter:
Sources told me that Michigan assistant Chris Partridge was offered a linebacker coaching position at Alabama, but Partridge decided against taking the job and is turning down the offer. A source said more offers might be on the table for Partridge,... https://t.co/4dsaB7tD4w

Plan on him leaving when he's offered coordinator positions
January 12th, 2018 at 12:51 PM ^
As well he should. The goal is to move up, right? Of course, situation and circumstance have to play in. I mean, DC at EMU is probably not a good career move, but DC at Wazzou is.
But I have to say, I'm not sure he has the necessary experience to walk into some P5, or even high end G5, school and be the DC. Could he do it? Probably, but I think it's stretching his experience level a bit. I'd like to see him get a couple more years under his belt, probably at positions other than LB, so he can get a more rounded resume.
Assuming, of course, that extra experienced is gathered in Ann Arbor...

Brandon Justice stating it's down to UM and a west coast school as a DC but likely UM.
Still no new UM deal on record.
January 12th, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
Didn't OSU just poach their DC?
January 12th, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
In theory Wazzu could be one. Rumors also are that Jed Fisch might be a candidate for the Arizona job. I believe Jed & Partridge are close, so if Jed did land the AZ job, I could see CP being somebody he potentially calls to be his DC.
But I mean, bird in the hand right? Does CP sign w/ Michigan over a few theoretical DC slots that might remain? I don't know the timeline on all of this. Michigan obviously wants to retain Partridge, so maybe they're willing to just give him the offer & let him "think about it" for another few weeks.
But if CP drags his feet to see how the NFL & remaining NCAA coaching musical chairs shakes out, there's a risk that Partridge bolts last minute & then Michigan has slimmer pickings for their 10th assistant coaching slot. So hopefully M has the "what if Partridge leaves us" contingency already lined up.
That's probably my biggest frustration with this staff lately RE: recruiting--seemingly not having solid contingency plans lined up for WHEN things inevitably don't go our way on occasion. Hopefully they aren't making the same errors when it comes to coaching staff issues.

Come on man you sound like you think Harbaugh is new at this staff building thing...OF COURSE he has contigency plans who wouldn't. And yes, I'm sure they've had recruiting contingenies too but sometimes even those don't come your way..and sometimes they do along with the '3 starz' crew.

Please stay. We value all you've done for the program - a huge part of M's turnaround success the last 3 years

Exactly...no one gets them all right but I think coach has a pretty good eye for coaching talent.

for umbig11
what does the other offers mean?
January 12th, 2018 at 1:33 PM ^
It means he is a highly sought after coach.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:36 AM ^
Still nervous about this situation. The Bama folks were staying he wasn't coming this morning, but still no deal announce for Michigan.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:38 AM ^
He still has options. It's still not a lock that he returns. Likely, but not 100%.

Coverage Coordinator, since we already have Dr. Blitz on staff

3rd and long slot coverage coordinator?
January 12th, 2018 at 1:13 PM ^
January 12th, 2018 at 11:29 PM ^
Or he could just be another co-offensive coordinator. Based on our performance this year, I'm sure another one will bring the needed improvement!
January 12th, 2018 at 11:38 AM ^
Hard to hang onto these guys for too long. Except for Don Brown (DC lifer) and Mattison (AA lifer) everyone else on the staff will always be looking to move up.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:40 AM ^
AD probably pointed the Michigan Money Cannon at him and said "you sure you want to go to Bama?"
January 12th, 2018 at 11:40 AM ^
Chris Patridge is going to be a head coach someday.. I hope it is for Michigan.. We love you CP!!
January 12th, 2018 at 11:45 AM ^
I think that may be a little early to say. We know he's a great recruiter but don't know how good of a coach he really is yet. Remember, even though he was the LB coach, that is the position Don Brown specializes in and coaches too.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^
While he's proven to be an elite recruiting and I think it's crucial to retain him, let's pump the brakes on the head coaching talk until he at least shows he can handle an entire defense first.

Nice ring to the title: Chris Partridge

You guys realize he turned down the Bama offer because he has a DC offer right? MIchigan LB job will get him a raise over what he would get at Bama. But he's debating whether to come back as LB coach or move on to a D coordinator role.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:49 AM ^
Wait you're not umbig11...
January 12th, 2018 at 12:06 PM ^
Then he is as good as gone, unless Harbaugh gives him at least an assistant head coach type title.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:45 AM ^
He has been great and just as importantly is the only guy on this staff who has proven himself as an elite recruiter.
January 12th, 2018 at 6:04 PM ^
No that's not true...Mattison has been an elite recruiter for a long time.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^
CP is our most important position coach. I hope we do whatever it takes to retain him.
January 12th, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^

... if he turned down Bama, I think he's staying. Just my $0.02.

Harbaugh should try to get Jerry Montgomery back. He was just hired by Jimbo at A&M but I'm sure Michgan could steal him back by next season. He's a great recruiter and defensive coach, I know Mattison already coaches the D Line but Montgomery could be his replacement down the road.
January 12th, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
Bunch of has-beens. Their time is past.

January 12th, 2018 at 12:15 PM ^
Wait wait wait wait wait...
I was told by everyone at OSU and MSU that the only reason why Patridge was hired was to get guys like Peppers and Gary.
He has no coaching chops, he's just a recruiting hire because Harbaugh breaks the rules and is sleezy like that.
O... no? That was all BS? Ok, move along.

And more ties to the Mid-west too. Not CP obviously but the other hires have ties to the region.

Gotta help with recruiting short and long term, and just like the loyalty to Michigan.

January 12th, 2018 at 12:48 PM ^
Honestly surprised by this news. This is great, hope Partridge stays and takes over when Don Brown retires. Need loyalty on this staff and Chris seems to be really loyal to Jim, this school, and his players.
January 12th, 2018 at 1:14 PM ^
...until the box of money & responsibility he's being offered elsewhere is big enough, that is. This is a business for these guys, and "loyalty" only goes so far when so much money is at stake.
