4 star CB IL Jyaire Hill, he's down to Michigan and Illinois. Expected to announce on ESD this Wednesday, Dec 21st at 4 PM.

3 star CO LB Hayden Moore, currently committed to Nebraska.

3 star transfer OL Drake Nugent from Stanford. He has 2 years of eligibility left, started the last 24 games for Stanford at C and was All-Pac 12 honorable mention this year. He was ranked outside of the top 1000 as a recruit in 2019, and is currently the #63 transfer player according to 247.

The portal success is great, but I’m wondering where this is going. It’s great for the players, of course, but I’m not sure it’s going to be good, in the long run, for fans. I used to love college basketball, but one and done killed it for me. One of the things I enjoyed most was watching players progress from their freshman year to their senior season. Each year, 3-4 players arrived and the same number left. There was continuity. Since one and done arrived, the best players usually stay just 1-2 years. There’s far less continuity and because of that, the players have less connection to the school and I became less invested in following them. The quality of play has suffered as well. It’s just not as fun to watch.

I hope the portal and NIL don’t do the same thing to college football. These portal wins are going to  prompt more players on the current roster to leave. I could see this getting to the point where a school’s roster undergoes significant portal-related restructuring every year. I could also see it reaching the point where the big money schools like Alabama or Georgia are able to buy the best players from other schools they weren’t able to successfully recruit, or missed, during the high school recruiting process.

These are all valid points, but at the end of the day it really is going to be "what is in the best interest for the player"

I think Harbaugh gets it.  If a player develops and shines at some smaller program and gets on PFF/NFL radars, it is very likely in going to be in a players best interest (in some cases) to look to a bigger program.

What is best for the player/student should be the top priority for every college whether it is sports or academics.  So I think we have to be willing to give up a bit of our school pride and respect the growth of the athlete over anything else.

Hill is the most important recruitment for us this cycle IMO. We have to get atleast one great prospect at CB each cycle.

We will have to wait and see who is declaring and if we lose anyone else to portal but 2023 could be preseason #1 and the title favorite.

I personally don’t understand PFF OL rankings but Nugent is on their all transfer team.

Nugent’s 80.2 grade this season was the seventh best among centers in college football. The senior particularly excelled as a run blocker, where he earned an 83.7 grade that ranked fourth.

This is Nugent's second straight strong season. Over the past two seasons, his 89.1 run-blocking grade is seventh among FBS centers.

This can go three ways, as I see it:

Scenario 1: Portal player is clearly an upgrade at a position, Current player either sees the writing on the wall and transfers (it's a shame, but probably a win-win) or stays for depth (still a win-win).

Scenario 2: Portal and current players are close in ability. Competition ensues and the better player plays, while a solid two-deep is maintained.

Scenario 3: Current player is superior to portal player. Current player maintains his position as starter. The only way this goes sideways is if the portal player is promised the starting job, as was rumored with Shea Patterson, and then coasts (as was also rumored).

Most of these situations, then, are a net positive for the team. My only concern is a lack of chemistry due to portal additions, as we have seen with other teams.

Trust the coaches. To maintain our elite status -- it feels great typing that -- we have to acquire the most talent we can using all methods. We need to continue to reload rather than rebuild.

Let's get more secondary help (J. Hill) and also a power back. Onward.
