It's a 6-year contract with the 70 year old Pitino.  A huge gamble for St John's, IMO, to take a chance on hiring a coach with that much baggage and at that age, but then again, obviously nothing is sacred anymore in the pursuit of wins.

If all you care about is winning, then Pitino will get that for you. He'll have them within the tournament within 2-3 years.

He's not a good guy, but there are plenty of dirtbags in college sports. A lot of ADs sit there and say "well if I don't hire this guy, I'm going to get fired for lack of results anyway? So why not roll the dice on him and hope he doesn't bring me a scandal? At least then I have a shot of not getting fired, because if I stay the course I KNOW I'm getting fired.

not a gamble IMO. when i was young, the johnnies were part of the big east renaissance. georgetown, StJohns, Providence, and others have become afterthoughts. Nova is the only one who has most recently thrived and that appears to have been mainly Jay Wright. UConn and Cuse had continuity because of legendary coaches.

I don't see much of a downside. They're a small commuter type school on Long Island with a strong following, but have been irrelevant for 25 years... god. Felipe Lopez was the next huge thing.. that was 1999. Shit i'm getting too old.

I think they'll be more competitive but Iona had been one of the more consistent mid-major teams before he showed up and so the lift necessary to get St. John's back to competitive in the Big East, let alone nationally relevant, is going to be tough.  And let's be honest - a lot of the stuff Pitino got away with building those teams at Kentucky and Louisville (the hundred dollar handshakes, the free cars, etc.) are basically allowed now and so I wonder how much of an advantage he'll have there.

I'll ignore the fact that he's also an awful person going to work at a Catholic school because hypocrisy don't mean a thing if you can get a game on TruTV in March.

Well...yeah. They haven't been worth squat since the Felipe Lopez/Ron Artest era, and, while that feels like only yesterday to me, it's actually close to 30 years ago (Damn. DAMN!). They've always taken pride in being New York's college b-ball team and being nationally ranked every year in the Carnesecca days.

This is conflicting for me. On the one hand I have a soft spot for St. John's as an ex-pat New Yorker. On the other hand...scuzzy-ass Rick Pitino, man! One the one hand, he's a very successful coach. On the other, fuck him, the block was clean. On the one hand, I like hookers and blow! On the other--waitresses of Queens start packing that mace if you don't already.

Should just make this thread a general college basketball coaching change topic because I also want to discuss Cooley going to Georgetown.  His name was thrown around with the Michigan job back when they went with Juwann (depending who you talked to, he was actually offered and turned it down).

I was one of those who was down on big Ed at the time - but it will be interesting to see if he can turn around Georgetown, especially as Michigan has hit a bit of a skid recently....

For the lips of a harlot are like a honeycomb dropping, and her throat is smoother than oil. But her end is bitter as wormwood.

Micah Shrewsberry...just might get an substantial raise out of this.

Reading Prov coming hard for his services. Needing PSU answer whatever anyone else offer. Like his style which translate good for PSU and league.

So much for poverty and chastity...but he was found to have "promoted an atmosphere of compliance" at Louisville so I guess they figure they've at least got the obedience part covered.

Who was complying with what is an open question.

How many seconds will he last on the bathroom floor at St. Johns ?

Pitino said entire sexual encounter with Sypher "took less than 15 seconds"

I wish they'd called me to write the job posting.  Qualifications:  Must be a criminal sex vampire with a history of getting to the NCAA tournament.  Experience in lying, cheating and/or stealing preferred.  Compensation based on experience and how much we can loot from our donors.

I don’t think it’s a gamble at all.

He’s won at every college stop he’s been to.

Hiring an NBA assistant who’s been away from the college game for 2 and a half decades and ZERO head coaching experience...now that's a gamble.

Get fired for anything but losing and you will always find another place willing to give you a chance.

All in all a pretty good hire for St. John’s, best case, he makes them relevant and a destination job once he leaves, worst case it doesn’t work out and you are what you are.

Inflation is out of control as it is - I bemoan those seeking hookers and blow in that area of the country as prices are going to skyrocket.

Thoughts and prayers.
