It's a 6-year contract with the 70 year old Pitino.  A huge gamble for St John's, IMO, to take a chance on hiring a coach with that much baggage and at that age, but then again, obviously nothing is sacred anymore in the pursuit of wins.

St John's basketball hasn't done squat in over 20 years. I'm not sure hiring Pitino is a gamble at all. Slimy though he may be, Pitino is one of those great coach villains who will create some buzz for that program (possibly good, possibly bad).

One thing is certain, and that is Pitino can coach. I'd expect to see St. John's back in the NCAA tourney within 2-3 years.

He definitely can coach, he's one of the best college basketball coaches of all time. In his prime, I would take him with equal talent over any one. Years ago (he was still at Louisville), I happened upon his weekly coaches radio show a couple of times while on extended drives. I almost changed the station the first time because I really didn't care about Louisville basketball. he explained Xs and Os better than I have ever heard them explained. One time in particular it was about the key elements of the press, how to run it and how to deal with it. The show was so far different than any other coaches show which are usually full of banalities and cliches.
