Gobert turned in a positive test and now it’s over for a while.

Crazy times.

Engineered bio weapons should be outlawed.  This thing has parts of SARS and HIV engineered in.  Nuts

Its another conspiracy theory that lacks evidence...  The virus has been isolated to an animal market in China, and virologists have said it comes from animals and that the genome has no tells pointing to genetic engineering.  There are a lot of papers out on it already that explain the differences and relations it has with SARS and MERS.  The virus name is SARS-Cov-2, part of a family of many coronavirus', and it causes the COVID-19 disease.

Dude - do you really believe that?????

I mean - the genetic sequence of this virus is a known fact - it's available to 1000s of medical experts.

If this virus was a bio-weapon, I simply can't imagine it wouldn't have been flagged by a large % of those experts.

All sporting events will follow suit, whether it's now or in a week or two weeks. There's no way in hell they'll play the NCAA tournament if the pros are sitting.

Today definitely feels like THE "pivot day" as regards public reaction to COVID-19.  It feels like a day we'll remember for awhile.

One thing I know --- we CAN get through this.  It's an open question as to whether we will, but we definitely CAN.  We are all each other's brother.  But it has to the potential to be kind of crazy for the next 100 or so days.

Another thing I know --- at NO point in human history have we had such a mass of global intellectual power and know-how, such that we can create and fast-track a vaccine.  If we can do that, we will definitely get through this.

Private companies, like Regeneron, have been developing medicinal products for this virus already (IDK details)

Genome and DNA already sequenced AFAIK.

Vaccines already being lab tested in mice (I think?) at the CDC and internationally.

long term, like 12-18 months, there will likely be a vaccine and significant immunity in the population. Current measures are being taken to get us thru the next 2 months (thru the traditional flu/cold season and eventually school year) without the health care system being overrun by 1-3% of the population who will likely get this desease and have serious enough symptoms to lead to hospitalization.

the hope is then that the summer will suppress the virus for the same reasons it suppresses cold/flu, that the virus will not mutate quickly like cold/flu and that 2nd contractions are not commonplace (they have been reported but not confirmed AFAIK). Next fall & winter will likely lead to a resurgence to some extent as cold/flu season returns.

point is, much like Y2k, people will hear about it for a while. Experts and professionals will work their balls off on this, with assistance from federal and state governments as well as international efforts. Then it won't be so bad and people will blame the media for talking this up and say, "yeah-nothing even happend, why were people freaking out?"

I hate to rain on that parade, but most of the damage of this virus will be done before there is a vaccine. They can't fast track it so much without that being dangerous in its own right.

This thing may well kill thousands in this country before it's summer even. Everyone keeping their contacts to a minimum is what's gonna save lives now. That's really the gist of it. Keep to yourself for a month or two. Sometimes hiding in a corner is all we can do.

Ok, I don't know why anyone is comparing this to Y2K.

AFAIK, NO ONE got ill or died from Y2K.

As of right now, there are 125,000+ confirmed cases of this virus, and over 4,600 deaths.

Y2K was a stupid computer non-issue; this is a real disease.

Please stay calm, keep your hands and phones clean, avoid crowds and help those who need help.

Also, try to keep some sense of perspective. China appears to be getting past the worst of things; about 65,000 of the 80,000 known to have been infected are recovered, and most others will recover. New infections there have slowed to a trickle - that's out of a population of 1.5B.

If their experience in any way reflects what we might expect, there's gonna be major disruptions to normal life, but hopefully not a huge loss of life. Most folks will be ok.

Stay calm, stay smart, stay positive, and try to be helpful.

You are absolutely right.  This thing will do a lot of damage in the meantime, and there is going to be a lot of risk/reward to consider if we do fast-track a vaccine.

Tough decisions are ahead.  Some real-life "trolley problems."  And hopefully there isn't too much Monday Morning QBing done on those truly truly truly tough decisions.

Watch what has been pushed already. Straight from the horse's mouth. Neg away.

You see the world through the only lens that matters, Western. The rest will one day stand with their hands over their mouths in speechless wonder of what they are seeing unfold before them. Too late, too late.

I sure hope this virus is on the downtrend by summer. I would hate if all NCAA and NFL is canceled. This is sure depressing possibly losing the tourney, baseball and football next fall.
