Detroit News report: Drevno interested in talking to WMU about HC job
I just saw this article by Lynn Henning stating the "Detroit News has learned" that Coach Tim Drevno is interested in discussing the Western Michigan Univ. Head Coach position, citing "multiple scouts as well as an industry source familiar with Drevno's view of the WMU job".
Very carefuly worded but Lynn Henning is a veteran reporter and columnist, and therefore it could have some merit. Of course, Coach Drevno just recently signed a 5 year contract extension, but it would appear he still has HC aspirations.
EDIT: Two other candidates are mentioned: Mel Tucker - Georgia DC; Jeff Hafley - 49'ers DB coach,

I think the average MAC head coach makes $400,000 and Fleck made $800,000 last year.

It is mentioned that the AD has hinted that the salary could exceed Drevno's current rate.

in case he were to leave,

Unfortunately Fisch left too early, I think he'd be the ideal fit for next OC were Drevno to leave.

I don't think there was any way we were going to have both.
If we don't get Roman, but just a top OL coach to replace Drevno, that works well, too. Hamilton becomes the OC and Wheatley could get promoted to run game coordinator.

It's been strongly hinted that Fisch was told to look elsewhere.
January 12th, 2017 at 8:58 AM ^
so.. by whom might it have been strongly hinted, pray tell?

"Probably wasn't satisfied." That's quite an assumption. What are you basing this suggestion on? I'm legitimately curious as to where Fisch was deficient, in your eyes...or Harbaugh's, I guess.

Notetoself asked who hinted that Fisch was told to look elsewher. He didn't ask who told Fisch to look elsewhere.

That's fair, but isn't it entirely possible that Fisch left on his own accord, without prompting? He landed a pretty good job, one that most would probably consider a promotion based on more responsibilities.

Just lobbing unsourced grenades into the discussion. Very helpful

Wow. Didn't mean to imply I had a source other than the internet itself, in places other than this domain. You don't have to look too hard. When looking how things were done under Bo, he was probably told to see if he can't find something. It doesn't play out in the media. That's how it's done except Saban. No grenade geez.

Fisch already was the OC....co-OC, but OC none the less.
January 12th, 2017 at 9:38 AM ^
being a co-OC, especially when the other guy's title is OC, not co-OC or run coordinator. Fisch had input, but was third man on the totem pole for play calling responsibility.

It looks like Roman will be the new OC for the Ravens.

January 12th, 2017 at 9:49 AM ^
Is there any concern that Drevno leaves and takes Wheatley as his OC? Seems unlikely, but that would be rough.
January 12th, 2017 at 10:23 AM ^
No matter who the OC is, it's still Harbaugh's offense. It's actually good for him to change OC's failry often because he isn't afraid to add someone else's plays to his playbook. Michigan will be fine no matter who the OC is.
The "worst case scenario" is that Harbaugh's offense still works great and he adds another HC to his growing "coaching tree."

when well-regarded Michigan assistants think following the guy who went 13-1 in Kalamazoo is a good career move. Good luck recruiting there long-term.

Right? At least wait for the next guy to get fired and then go and take credit for the "rebuild" to get a P5 job.
Western literally has nowhere to go but down in terms of on-field success.

beat a team like Alabama in a NY6 bowl game. Or turned water into wine. On the field.

I don't think WMU will be so quick to forget where they were before Fleck. The next WMU coach doesn't need to have 13 win seasons every year to avoid the hot seat.
January 12th, 2017 at 11:31 AM ^
how quickly fans get used to winning.
January 12th, 2017 at 8:54 AM ^
It's tough to replace a guy with a 30-21 record. Big shoes, etc.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:41 PM ^
Fleck replaced Bill Cubit, who was fired after compiling a 51-47 record at WMU. Fleck's first season was 1-11, but in his subsequent three seasons went 29-11. That's what Bronco fans are going to regard as the baseline he established, and it was a solid trajectory upward overall.
I'm not saying that Wheatley can't be successful there, but it's very likely that his first season out of the gate at WMU will be a step down—how many programs at any level go undefeated in two successive regular seasons with two different coaches? And even if Ty goes 10-2 in his first season, he'll still be under pressure during his second season to not have a further step down—if they then went 8-5 in year two (which would still be a good season at WMU historically)‚ you can be sure that at least a portion of the fanbase in Kazoo will start grumbling, however illogical that might be.
Just for historical comparison: Bo had the good fortune not to follow Ara Parseghian at Miami of Ohio; Ara went 39-6-1, the best winning percentage in Miami history. Instead, Bo followed John Pont, whose tenure at Miami was a slow slide down from the lofty record that Parseghian had established. The expectations of the Miami fanbase at the time Bo took over from Pont were different from what they were when Pont took over for Parseghian.
I think it would make more sense for Wheatley to get some time as an OC under his belt first, and to do it at a Power 5 program.
January 12th, 2017 at 4:28 PM ^
It's also very late to make the jump, especially since Fleck took so many recruits with him. (I think it's 9). The players Wheatley has been in contact with this recruiting season aren't guys who have MAC expectations which means he's starting from zero.
January 12th, 2017 at 12:17 PM ^
I disagree. There are some good recruits in the last couple classes and WMU should be set up for continued success. Yes, 13-1 probably doesn't happen again, but as far as MAC-level jobs go, this is a pretty good one to take. The bad jobs to take are the ones where it's a fluke year that gets the MAC coach a Purdue level job, but the fundementals of the program are in the crapper.
Butch Jones rode well-built programs by Brian Kelly to a premier job at Tennessee, while arguably harming the fundementals of the two programs he took over.

I just read the piece and it sounds like she's grasping at straws on all the names.
Lynn also described someone as "a personal fireball" in the piece and I'm having a hard time seeing how that description got by an editor.

Ahem... For the record, Lynn Henning is male.

He typically covers Tigers baseball, FWIW.
