Bob Shoop (PSU DC) and Don Brown (Boston College DC)

Didn't BC have the best defense in the country this year? Sign Brown up please.
Edit: looking him up, he's a 60 year old who has only ever spent time on the East coast. Not sure how well of a fit he would be, but you never know.
December 2nd, 2015 at 10:57 AM ^
Oh wow, nevermind. I didn't know that either. Just knew that he was doing a fantastic job at Boston College. Knowing that, I agree the fit would definitely be questionable. Barry Odom (Mizzou's DC) could also be an option. Mizzou had a pretty good defense this year and he's fairly young and probably seeking a jump to a head coaching position.

Should Durkin leave:
Scott Shafer
Jim Leavitt
Lance Anderson
Ed Donatell

Did pretty well with South Florida against Rich Rod's spread offense. He also has ties to Harbaugh as a LB coach with the Niners.
December 2nd, 2015 at 1:29 PM ^
He bailed on Harbaugh after one year at Stanford or he was pushed out. Either way, I don't see him returning here.
Harbaugh went with relatively young coordinators on this staff, perhaps by design. I wonder who might be good up and coming candidates.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:21 AM ^
Pruitt has the same regional problem. Dude's never left the south.
December 2nd, 2015 at 1:19 PM ^
That might be important for a head coach, but not for assistants. We weren't too worried about Drevno and Baxter. I bet Pruitt would be an asset in recruiting.
December 2nd, 2015 at 10:57 AM ^
Durkin's not going anywhere... relax.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:02 AM ^
...if he left with so much unfinished business. I think he knows that, too. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if Harbaugh and staff had made gentlemen's agreements about tenure and not jumping ship too early.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:06 AM ^
Whenver coordinators do start leaving for HC jobs, I would imagine that Harbaugh can hire new coaches at entry level and allow those he already has to "step up" into new positions. If he can, I think it would be much better for the program.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:21 AM ^
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:34 AM ^
Agreed. I don't get the "unfinished business" argument. He shouldn't take a good job offer until Michigan beats OSU?
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:58 AM ^
I'd start off with just forcing OSU to actually punt first. Baby steps.

This is so hilariously terrible of a take I don't know what to do with it.
NO ONE with any career ambitions should take the Maryland or Rutgers jobs. You are resigned to nothing but mediocrity at best. They are deadend jobs for subpar candidates who are coaching out the string or have failed at multiple stops and are looking for a final shot.
If you were going to take a Big Ten job, you take it in the other division, which is wide open year after year after year. At Maryland/Rutgers, your aspirations are 5th place every year. Its an awful landing spot for a young guy like Durkin and if he's at all smart he will turn it down. It'd be idiotic as he would be doomed to failure and likely set his career back as a head coach for years to come.
I should note, I'm not just saying this because I want him to stay. If he was offered the Illinois job, I'd say go for it.

With Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State all playing in the same division, AND raiding your recruiting grounds, I think Maryland is fool's gold. Let an up and comer go there, a la Dino Babers or PJ Fleck. Young enough to not care about getting fired yet brash enough to endure the constant beat downs.
December 2nd, 2015 at 2:01 PM ^
With a good recruiting area and apparently a new commitment of financial support, it's a good job. Winning the division doesn't mean that much for getting a better job. Outperforming expectations and putting together some big wins will be enough.

that situation with Smart and Saban worked well becuase they are both defensive minds like Dantonio and Narduzzi. I don't think it's a coincidence that Harbaugh's offense's have done well because he's had Drevno with him most of the time. It's been a turnstyle at OC at Bama since Jim McElwain left

I always assumed that Vic turned the job down when Harbaugh was first forming the staff. Why would he leave the NFL to take it now?
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:02 AM ^
Agreed. If he were still in SF, I could see wanting to escape that tire fire. But he's in Chicago with John Fox and probably not in a situation he's looking to leave. Especially to head to college.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:53 AM ^
While he and Harbaugh were still firmly in place in San Francisco. I was filming something with him and he knew I was a Michigan grad and told me a number of great Harbaugh anecdotes. I asked him a bunch of stuff about Michigan and the 2011 search and talked to him about his career trajectory and whatnot. I came away from the convo thinking this guy is an NFL guy who wants to be an NFL Head Coach.
I don't think he'll leave the NFL for a lateral move. I could see him leaving for Head Coaching opportunity, but I would assume that would be merely a stepping stone to get him into the league as a HC.

possibly go back to DC?
December 2nd, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
Possible, but I would say unlikely. I think part of the reason he agreed to stay on as the D-line coach was because he liked the idea of still coaching but phasing down his responsibilities as a stepping-stone towards retirement.
December 2nd, 2015 at 10:53 AM ^
Yeah, I'll pass.
I want someone who can stop these hyper spreads like OSU and IU.
If you include the 2011 game which we won, OSU is averaging 37.2 PPG against us that last 5 years.
Indiana is averaging 32.7 PPG in the last 3 meetings and that's if you include the Zander Diamont game last year where they only put up 10. Take that one out when they have an actual QB and it's much worse: 44 PPG.
Good DL coach that has done a great job with the DL this year.

December 2nd, 2015 at 12:55 PM ^
Jim Leavitt might be the answer. He was able to shut down Rich Rod's top notch WV teams. In 2006 he beat 7th ranked WV 24-19 and in 2007 beat them 21-13 when they were ranked #5. Maybe someone can do an in-depth reasearch on him, but he was a pretty good coach at South Florida. He was also Harbaugh's LB coach in San Francisco.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:44 AM ^
No to Mattison as DC. I am not even sold on him as a DL coach at this point in his career.
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:57 AM ^
December 2nd, 2015 at 11:58 AM ^
You realize how good our DL was this year, right?
December 2nd, 2015 at 12:11 PM ^
I really want to hear your rationale about this because I find it profoundly dumb at face value. Your argument cannot be merely based on his age.
December 2nd, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
Mattison again? would people want that?
