OT: USMNT loses to Canada (Yes, That Canada) for the first time since 1985
Don't a lot of you people like soccer or something? The USMNT is even featured on the main page sometimes so I feel silly calling it OT.
So, my understanding is it's humiliating to lose to Canada. I didn't know Canada played soccer, eh?
USMNT lost 2-0.
I'm just here for the schadenfreude.

Canada is not great so this is an embarrassing lost mostly because there was zero effort on display. They KNEW this was a huge game for Canada to get into the top 6 in CONCACAF and they flat out didn't show up....again

I don't follow soccer but if you are at or around the top 6, isn't that pretty good?

Holyfield is the 6th best boxer...in Georgia.

Charlie! Come on out and get your whoopin.
October 16th, 2019 at 12:05 PM ^
Not the top six globally. The top six in CONCACAF, the North American/Caribbean federation, which is pretty weak (much weaker than Europe or South America).

We’ve your NBA championship and the US open. Just give us back the Stanley Cup, unharmed, and we will pretend the whole thing never happened.
sincerely,
Canada

Well, at least the u.s. is losing while playing an entirely uninteresting style of soccer.

This was “Michigan losing to Rutgers” level of embarrassing.
October 16th, 2019 at 12:45 AM ^
No.
Cuba is Rutgers. As we all seen recently.
This was Michigan losing to Minnesota.
October 16th, 2019 at 1:07 AM ^
I watched this game. There was an absence of any semblance of pride or backbone or fight from the US. I can probably count on one hand the number of 50/50 challenges won by Americans.
Believe me when I say this was a Rutgers-level catastrophe.
October 16th, 2019 at 10:10 AM ^
There was indeed a complete lack of effort from the US. I don't know if it's M v Rutgers or M v Minnesota because Rutgers over the last 20 years has had some teams that are waaaaaay better than Canada's best teams, relatively speaking.
But yeah. doesn't matter. This loss was bad. Horrible. Head-shakingly, wtf-level of bad that makes you think the T&T loss maybe wasn't as bad as things could get. My ideas:
1) Bradley needs to be gone.
2) Don't pull Pulisic off. I don't care what else is going on, or what you have to do to make it ok to not take Pulisic off. Just fix that.
3) The hardest fix: purge the remnants of the twilight Gulati years and the Claudio Reyna "At youth levels, we shouldn't be playing to win" youth program. All those like-minded people need to be sacked. I'm willing to give Cordeiro and Berhalter a bit more time, but if Berhalter has another result like this, then replace him immediately to have as much time as possible and try to salvage this World Cup cycle. Cordeiro should already have Berhalter's replacement in mind.
October 16th, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
Does Cordeiro have the final say? I thought the "GM" Ernie Stewart is in charge of making those decisions.
Also sounds like Stewart has to report to the "CEO" who is Gerg's brother.
October 16th, 2019 at 9:49 PM ^
Yeah, US Soccer is a clusterfuck. Or a nepotism fuck, maybe.
I think that Cordeiro has a vote in hiring the CEO, and I think that nominally Cordeiro's position as President is the top position in the organization. But whether or not he can tell Earnie what to do about personnel decisions, I don't know. You may well know better than I.
But the point is that US Soccer is in a terrible way. The culture and the organization seem to be rotten from within. This article gives a bit of an overview. https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2019/06/21/u-s-soccer-in-final-stages-of-hiring-new-ceo-jay-berhalter-in-running/ In particular, reading some of the Glassdoor reviews of US Soccer here https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/U-S-Soccer-Federation-Reviews-E9884.htm , I can only think that US Soccer is in an appalling state. This doesn't seem to me to be a problem that will be fixed any time soon. To the contrary, I think we're going to find out just how much worse things can get.

More like BYU losing to Weber State. The USMNT hasn't won enough lately to be Michigan.
October 16th, 2019 at 3:59 PM ^
Michigan hasn't won enough to be Michigan, either. So there's that.

I was at the Canada v Mexico Gold Cup match in Denver this summer. 50K fans there, more or less.
No joke, I did not see even one Canadian soccer fan that night!
Alphonso Davies, however. That dude is a legitimate talent. Still a teenager.
October 16th, 2019 at 1:34 AM ^
That's funny. My daughter and I went to the Canada/Mexico last summer too. We saw a few Canadien fans on light rail heading home but that's it.
October 16th, 2019 at 1:03 PM ^
Denver has a massive Mexican migrant community, so this isn't very surprising to me.

Shouldn’t it be USMNST?
October 16th, 2019 at 3:16 AM ^
On a positive soccer note: the Michigan’s women’s team is ranked number 19 in the coaches poll with a record of 11-3-1. I would hazard a guess that it has been years since they have been ranked. Last game of the year (regular season) is at home the day after the ND football game against Maryland.

UNMNT loses to Canada...in what? Surely we're not talking soccer.
P.S. 'Yes, that Canada' was funny!
October 16th, 2019 at 5:50 AM ^
am i the only one that thinks of the US Mint, as in, production of money, whenever they see 'USMNT'?
i mean what the heck, canada, you keep your funny money and your loonies to yourself!

Deep state code for we are buying Canada?
October 16th, 2019 at 6:41 AM ^
i read that we hold the mortgage and that its kept in a secret bunker somewhere in DC. or in nevada. or maybe in arizona. not sure. but we own it by a treaty that was ratified in blood b/w george washington and one of the english kings, king somebody the somethingth, that guy.
October 16th, 2019 at 8:12 AM ^
I love Canada and its affable, gregarious citizens. But this would turn them into a fierce, fight to the death bunch. You would struggle to find more than a handful who would support becoming a part of the good old US of A.
October 16th, 2019 at 7:31 AM ^
Considering that you broke the code, xtramelanin, does that mean you ALSO have the code for using the US Mint for personal withdrawals? If so, perhaps you could start SEC-style recruiting for the US men's soccer team.
October 16th, 2019 at 9:31 AM ^
i'd like to see how it works first. if you could send me your bank account number and i could see if wiring money and turning it into checks written to me and cashed works, then yeah, sounds great.

The best athletes in the U.S. don't play soccer. The system is setup for wealthy suburban families that want to play tens of thousand $ a year to play year round for clubs.
October 16th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
Do the best athletes in the US play hockey or baseball? How about competing in gymnastics, ice skating, or swimming? Because many of those cater to those same economic groups and we compete at the highest level on the world stage in those sports. It's not about having the best athletes necessarily, or where you recruit your athletes from. Much of it is about having a competent development system - of which the US is quite poor when it comes to soccer. Soccer is one of a few sports where being a great athlete can help, but in many ways it is a very cerebral and tactical sport where you can compensate in different ways for those athletic deficiencies. Many of the top teams in soccer do not boast the best athletic metrics, but still perform at very high levels. England, Italy, France, etc.. high performing teams, good with maybe some great athletes, but more so they have overall good soccer cultures and development systems.

Except the US has, by far, the best womans soccer team and has had it for years. Are we saying that US Soccer has a better development program for the womens side versus the mens?
Certainly, support and money have an impact, but the fact that men have more professional options in athletics than women in the US pretty much ensures that the best male athletes in this country do not take up soccer in favor or basketball, football, or baseball.
October 16th, 2019 at 9:13 AM ^
As with most things, it's a combination of a lot of factors.
I would not rule out the possibility that we have better development for our women's team than other countries.
