And Harbaugh was supposed to be the one that changed all of that and, more than any other hire in school history, he was given the tools and support needed to succeed right from the outset.
At this point I realize that hoping to catch up to Ohio State is a pipe dream, but the fact that Harbaugh was pegged to join names like Bo, Woody, Yost, Tressel, and Urban in the pantheon of B10 legends, and that he’s probably going to leave Michigan having achieved less success than contemporary coaches like Mark Dantonio, Pat Fitzgerald, James Franklin, Paul Cryst, Kirk Ferentz, Joe Tiller, Brett Bielema, John Cooper and many others..........I don’t see how simply saying “We’ve been a 3-4 loss team for 20 years now” absolves him of that failure.
December 7th, 2020 at 11:04 PM ^
" Michigan has been a 3-4 loss program for most of the past 30 years."
That's a clear sign of unreasonable expectations. Only three FBS programs in the country, and just two P5 teams, have averaged fewer than three losses this century.
December 7th, 2020 at 11:57 PM ^
Michigan has been a 3-4 loss program for most of the past 30 years.
OK, you keep repeating that, but there are also other historical norms for M football.
M, historically, wins the Big 10. It has done so 8 times (several of which were ties) in the last 30 years.
M, historically, beats OSU often. It has beaten OSU 10 times (plus a tie) in the last 30 years.
M is failing historical standards under Harbaugh.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:28 PM ^
Only Michigan could spin retention the same week they lose to Ohio St by multiple touchdowns. Look fire the money cannon then and hire the best assistants. Have someone teach Jim how to run a minute drill and maybe we can improve...
December 7th, 2020 at 8:30 PM ^
Oh and I have to add...
Pretty sure Harbaugh had large incentives for performance in current contract...DID NOT HELP
December 7th, 2020 at 8:31 PM ^
Imagine how bad we would have been without those incentives
December 7th, 2020 at 8:34 PM ^
Did he get 1 cent from any incentives other than the bowl win his first year?
December 7th, 2020 at 8:59 PM ^
No shit. Harbaugh needs incentives to win? Here’s an incentive - beat OSU and win the Big Ten next season or you are gone.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:30 PM ^
Current assistant coaches commence nail biting.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:31 PM ^
Can someone explain the provisions to hire top assistants for me? Was pay an issue for partridge and mattison type of coaches and that’s why they left? I just assumed Michigan had money for top assistants already.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
Pay was not an issue...I'm head scratching at this as well.
The details of this contract are odd to say the least. Sounds like it's a gentle push out the door but we'll keep you if you wanna stay...at our price however.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:56 PM ^
Definitely feels like a nudge out the door. Details like those don't leak by accident.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
Pretty sure they are talking about even more money than what's already being paid to our guys.
Basically warde is saying back up the dump truck of money to the best available coordinators and get them
December 7th, 2020 at 9:08 PM ^
You know where the best available coordinators go to? The available head coaching positions. This is ridiculous. How about we just throw Harbaughs money at someone not named Harbaugh.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:45 PM ^
I believe there was tension between Brown and Mattison. Partridge left out of ambition and also to pursue success outside of Harbaugh.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:45 PM ^
Michigan's coaches get paid pretty well.
Brown 1.5M, good for 9th (T)
Gattis 1.1M, good for 15th (T)
Not sure about position coaches, but i know when Patridge was here he got 500k, which was definitely towards the top end of position coach pay scale.
Mattison, when he was at DL, was highly compensated in that role at 700K
Edit. Found the compesation from 2019. Michigan ranks 8th overall in total staff compensation. OSU 3rd.

December 7th, 2020 at 8:35 PM ^
What does “good provisions to hire top assistants” mean? Aren’t we already paying our coordinators and staff a lot?
December 7th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
Maybe it’s a renegotiation of the “whole package” and thus while Harbaugh’s pay would be significantly lower, they would still allocate “good” money for assistants?
?♂️
December 7th, 2020 at 8:41 PM ^
Brown and Gattis are among the highest paid coordinators in the country per a 247 I just found (albeit from this time last year). Maybe more money for position coaches? I’m not sure money is the problem so much as the guy making the hires.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:45 PM ^
Yeah I was under the impression that we had top paid assistants as well. Sometimes throwing money at a problem doesn’t solve anything.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:32 PM ^
Bingo. I took it as JH is taking pay cut, assistants won’t. But go find new and better assistants.
What really good assistants Want to come here under a coach on a hot seat? Reason you usually don’t rebuild with the current head coach in year 7. Assistants want job security, this isn’t it.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:38 PM ^
We need to send Guido and Bubba to get our wheelbarrows of money back :(
December 7th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
Sounds like cover for both parties for a departure. Manuel offers contract albeit at a reduced rate. Harbaugh can reject it and take a NFL job.
Looks to me like a conscious uncoupling.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
That was my sense as well...not a contract for unabashed support for sure. Well worded Sal!
December 7th, 2020 at 8:42 PM ^
and if no NFL gig materializes he comes back and is fired at a reduced cost next season. It's a contract that strongly encourages him to accept now (good for recruiting) and leave later (good for us going forward)
December 7th, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
NM
We'll see what happens. I'd like to see both parties mutually part ways.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
He’ll sign extension and then leave for nfl in January, if offered.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:53 PM ^
He may sign, which would save recruits and then take job in NFL in January when everything opens up. Decreased buyout allows that as well. Would also allow replacement coach finish his season without people asking if you are leaving to take Michigan job
December 7th, 2020 at 9:08 PM ^
We wouldn’t want to be scrambling to hire a coach in January.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:14 PM ^
Nor, frankly, do we want to be screwing over recruits who just signed based on the impression that the head coach is being retained.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:25 PM ^
Yeah I wouldn't, but it seems like much of the board has taken the "whatever it takes to win" mantra. A year ago everyone on this board thought Urban Meyer was a terrible human and now half the board wants Michigan to hire him. Strange times.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:47 PM ^
End of day, ncaa will let them out of NIL regardless of coach change if they want. If JH goes to nfl now or January, each guy will still have power to decide if he wants to stay at Michigan or leave.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:44 PM ^
I got bad news for you. If Harbaugh says tomorrow he’s out, you won’t get a new guy until minimum 12/20-12/23 if it’s any of the guys we want or should get. Campbell and Fickell are not leaving this season early. The nfl ends 1/3, so 1/4 black Monday. That’s only 2 weeks, not as long as you think.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:51 PM ^
Also allows him to keep the job, try to turn it around as I guess he wants to do, but hire kick ass heir apparent.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:41 PM ^
Sure John
December 7th, 2020 at 8:44 PM ^
Mmmmm bacon.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:49 PM ^
Is there a single food item in existence, that, without any other foods or seasonings etc., is better than bacon?
As a stand-alone food item, I honestly think it just might be the greatest.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:50 PM ^
That's why they have bacon-flavored milk shakes.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:51 PM ^
Macadamia nuts are severely underappreciated
December 7th, 2020 at 9:08 PM ^
You know, nuts are one thing I’ve just never really “got”. I don’t mind them, they don’t taste “bad”, I’m just not crazy about them like most others I know. You could have the best variety nut platter at a party and I wouldn’t even think about eating any. Never really liked them in baked goods either. Don’t know why...just never really appealed to me. ?♂️
Except for homemade baklava!! That stuff has finely ground nuts in it and they’re AMAZING. One of the best things about Christmas time is I get homemade baklava from family. I could eat that stuff all night.
Pre-emptive Scolding: Get your heads out of the gutter you sickos! ?
December 7th, 2020 at 9:17 PM ^
Unsalted nuts are gross. Salted feels like my blood pressure is going up 50 points. Light sea salt is juuuuust right.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:22 PM ^
Like McMurtry said, salted nuts are great. And addicting. Personally I think that nuts are good only as a stand alone food. They don't go with anything. Not even other nuts! Like, a bowl of macadamia nuts is amazing by itself. Pecans are also great. I love pecan pie but it's way better if you take the pecans off.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:53 PM ^
i sometimes put Bacon in my Chipotle burritos when I get home. The smokey bacon with the guac and pico is fire.
December 7th, 2020 at 9:04 PM ^
That is a genius idea actually. If I ever leave the house again and patronize a Chipotle I might have to try this
December 7th, 2020 at 9:08 PM ^
Is salt a seasoning?
December 7th, 2020 at 9:09 PM ^
Yes? I think?
December 8th, 2020 at 1:57 PM ^
Tom Colicchio says yes. And someone under-seasons almost every episode!
December 7th, 2020 at 8:46 PM ^
I honestly thought Lynn would get fired this morning after yesterday's shellacking, and Jimmy would be on the next flight out to LA.
December 7th, 2020 at 10:50 PM ^
It’s coming...they just will wait a few more weeks to let him go.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:56 PM ^
I'm assuming Bacon's got good info.
