Pre-Game Superstitions?

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on December 4th, 2021 at 8:58 AM

I've always thought that superstitions were ridiculous and unscientific.  What some fan posts online or wears, or does before the game doesn't impact the game in the slightest.

However, I had got into a routine this season where before the Michigan game I would do my family's grocery shopping and since Jersey Mike's was right there I would eat in there first before shopping and then make it back in time before kick off.  I did it before every game this year...except the Michigan State game.  Michigan is 11-0 this year when I do this and 0-1 when I don't do this.

I don't even want Jersey Mike's today, am a bit tired of the place, and I still think superstitions are dumb, but I almost feel compelled to go and eat a sub anyways just because 11-0 when I do it and 0-1 when I don't do it.

Do any of you have any pre-game superstitions?

I have too many in any given season/game to type.

This year, I met AngryDad in Cincy for game 1 (both there for Tigers/Reds) and we kept in touch every Saturday since. Except Mich St.

I recorded every Michigan game this year except MSU game. So, I made sure I had someone record OSU game for me as I wasn't home. I set the recording for Iowa game. I am sure we are going to win now.

I wore a maize and blue striped tie to this wedding last weekend in Cleveland that took place during the second and third quarters of the game. I'm back home now and fully prepared the watch the entire game. Wearing the same single windsor-knotted maize and blue tie.

Let’s get after it today boys

So I am a first year season ticket holder. Me and my buddies have been wearing a shirt we had made honoring a friend that passed away to every game. So needless to say it’s what I’m wearing now. I will continue to wear the shirt every game

This doesn't really count as a superstition but last week, I consulted Magic Eight Ball on whether Michigan would win and it said yes multiple times no matter how I asked the question. I just asked the Magic Eight Ball whether Michigan would win this game and it answered, "You may rely on it."

For me it's more uncertainties--if I've been wearing my Michigan hat and take it off halfway through the game do we lose? If I pause the stream do we lose? If I run out at halftime and rake and miss the beginning of the second half do I screw up our karma? Stuff like that. Otherwise, I'm not a superstitious person, don't believe in god or anything like that. . .

I don’t have any routines, but I look at betting line movements before the games, especially for the important games. For this year, the line notably moved in MSU’s favor for that game and moved in Michigan’s favor for the OSU game.

The line moved in Michigan’s favor this morning. Let’s see.

I wore a pair of scarlet(red) and gray underwear last Sat. I'm wearing a pair of black and gold undies today. The only good way I could think of to leave a stain on each program.

I always make sure I've shaved before a Michigan football game.  On workdays I normally do right after I wake up, but on Saturdays I can be lazy about it.

But not on gamedays.   Watching a game unshaven is a big no-no.  Once I tempted fate by not doing it, and we promptly fell behind in the first quarter.  I paused the game and headed to the bathroom.

Only wore my customized jersey for one game this year...and NOT again. I'm not wearing it again until the season is officially over. In fact, it's not even on a hanger at the moment. It's still inside-out and left on top of the dresser since that terrible day.

I don't like watching Michigan games at the bar since the App St game (where I was surrounded by OSU fans).

2 cups of coffee in the morning, and a ton of beer leading to, during, and after the games.

It was 1997 (cue Ray Liotta declaring “It was a glorious time”) and I was stationed in Korea and Michigan won every game and Charles Woodson did things only Charles Woodson could do.

We—my fellow soldiers I either knew or worked with—actually played touch football with some of the MPs on post and I bought a #33 Michigan jersey in the PX and wore it for games (both watched and played in).  It was a great year for football and that’s a big part of that assignment for me.

Upon returning to “the world” something went awry. Whenever I wore it, Michigan lost. Think Notre Dame and Syracuse can in ‘98 or UCLA in 2000. There were others and even my wife noticed and told me to stop wearing it so I did.

It hasn’t exactly helped but—although I still have that ancient jersey and treasure it—I will not wear it for a Michigan game.

Ever.
