Potential basketball transfers. Out of the running for Matt Mooney, but in for Dachon Burke?

Submitted by robbyt003 on

LINK for Matt Mooney

On Monday, he indicated he’d narrowed the choices for his next school down to Texas Tech, Creighton, Arizona State, Northwestern and Utah State.

With Ibi Watson transferring, and Wagner going pro, Michigan has 1 available scholarship and he seemed like the perfect option.

LINK predicting Dachon Burke (he would have to sit out a year).  Dachon Burke STATS

Has anyone else heard any other names as potential transfers (grad or not)?

I would hope that our one and only available scholarship for 2019 wouldn't go to a transfer from a Mid Major. I would prefer to get a 4 or 5 star freshman.

If we aren't going to get a grad transfer for the 2018-19 season, just leave it empty.

Michigan can't recruit 4 and 5 star players? We have 3 guys coming in this fall that are at least a 4 star.

Why are you acting like we should just get a 2* transfer and be happy?

You want a name, how about Mark Watts. He's a 4 star from Detroit. If you wouild like a list of players that Michigan is targeting, I suggest visiting umhoops.

As good as JB is at unearthing some gems, he’s even better at making sure quality recruits reach their potential. How many 4 and 5*s has JB had that were busts? I can only think of Chatman, Brundidge and Vogrich. Chatman is still a good player and it was more of a question of fit. JB is still more likely to miss on a lower rated guy than a higher rates one. We’ve still had our Colton Christians, Blake McClimans, Dawkins and Doyle’s. Whereas every top 50 prospect JB has gotten has been drafted by the NBA sans Chatman IIRC.

And while bagmen may affect some recruitments, we’ve still gotten a few top prospects over he years. We’ve got two top 40sh guys coming to campus next season. And are in some for 2019. So it’s definitelu preferable to take a grad transfer or go for a top rated 19 recruit over a mid major transfer.

Hell, Beilein doesn't trust Beilein to choose a 2 star over a 4 or 5 star. As was more than evident in the title game, talent matters. There's a reason Beilein said if we got a player who was good enough to leave after one year that the staff would drive him to the airport after the season.

Solid idea, but first off, why limit ourselves to four stars? I mean if we’re going to fill it with a star might as well make It a five star. And even then I feel like we’re limiting ourselves, I think we should fill the spot with Steph Curry. But not injured Steph, let’s go with healthy prime career Steph but with four years of eligibility. He’ll take a year to learn more coming off the bench then we can have three solid years of play from him. I mean that or just leave it open cause 11 really is better than 12 if you think about it.

That's not what he said. He said, if we're scholarship limited for '19, he'd prefer to bank the scholarship if it's not going to a grad transfer to then still be available for '19.

The reasoning being that our odds of landing a player of higher caliber in 2019 are better than in the transfer market. Seeing as our current class is comprised of 3 4/5*s, it would not seem unreasonable to hope for one in 2019.

Wonder if Beilein has kicked the tires with Joe Cremo out of SUNY Albany. Has been getting really high level interest and is from an area Beilein is familiar with

Don't think he's needed. He doesn't shoot the 3 ball great, and that's something we need with MAAR, Wagner, and Robinson all gone. Plus I'd rather have an extra roster spot for someone next year as a freshman because we have like zero seniors on the roster next year and we'll need some freshmen or else we may havbe a year all our production leaves and we have nothing in the cupboard.

Would be nice to get a one year grad transfer to open up more spots in the 2019 class. Aside from Mooney and Cremo (who seems to be the hottest grad transfer in terms of big names recruiting him), Zach Johnson from Florida Gulf Coast makes sense.

6-2, ORating of 111, 79% FT,  51% 2PT, 41% 3PT and a 3.2% steal rate (91st nationally).  Would provide instant shooting and FTs.

with the 2019 board of kids (and a prayer if maxey re classified) i think we are better served saving a scholarship for someone that can play in 2018 or a 2019 recruit

I'm wondering if it'd be better to just bank the scholarship for a 2019 recruit who can give this program four years vs. a grad transfer who can only give us one year, or any kind of transfer who may give us less than 4 years?

Of course, Beilein has earned the right to take whoever he wants and not be questioned for it. But this program is in pretty good hands next year. Losing Moe hurts, but everyone else is coming back, and with natural progression from Matthews, Simpson, Teske, Poole, and Livers, along with a VERY good recruiting class coming in, there really aren't any immediate holes that need to be filled in unless you can find a proven grad transfer at the 5 who can spell Teske next year. I imagine those guys are few and far between.

I'm good with whatever Beilein wants to do. He knows his team's needs far better than I ever could. But if it were up to me and based on my limited understanding of the game, I'd rather bank the scholarship and swing for the fences on signing a five star in 2019. It's not like Beilein doesn't have a lot of recruiting cache right now,

I would take a grad transfer, but we've seen how tough it is for first year players in Beilein's offense.  Although, PGs seem to struggle more.

I do like the idea of having the scholarship open for a 2019 recruit, though.  We don't have any seniors on our roster next year and Matthews is the only person who is a realistic early-entry candidate.

Transfers obviously happen, but it'd be nice to have at least one open scholarship.

they don't take away a scholarship for 2019. We have an open scholarship for 2018. A grad transfer that can fill a specific role, like a sniper, would be nice. Last season we got Simmons because the starting PG job was up for grabs. The main spots on the depth chart open now are backup center and backup at the 1 and 2.

I doubt we're in a great position to attract a grad transfer when we're competing with schools with bigger holes on their rosters, but we need to keep options open while we're waiting on Matthews decision. More than likely, we'll go to another season one player short, but I doubt Beilein lets the roster go down to 11.

but lots of question marks too. Castleton may not be physically ready. Davis has to show he can stay on the floor. Livers did not play well at the 5 and may be needed to play heavy minutes at the 4.

That situation reminds me of our PG battle going into this seaon, just not nearly as critical. If we get a grad transfer, I doubt it will be a big, because good ones are hard to find. A shooter is more realistic, but I'd be fine with either.

According to Maxey the schools that have made him a priority are Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma State and Texas.

:“Coach [John] Beilein was really good and telling me how I’d fit in with the Go Blue brand, as he calls it, and he was selling his cup of tea. He was telling me with the way they space the floor with guards like me and scoring guards that we’d fit well together.”
