OT?: Interesting Cade McNamara interview by IOWA Talkin' Hawks
Starting at 26:45
After leaving Michigan for surgery and eventual transfer to Iowa, Cade lived in an abandoned warehouse while in rehab for his leg. Interesting story from a 'former' Michigan player.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:19 PM ^
It's not that interesting that he quit on his team halfway through the season.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:22 PM ^
Eh, once he got injured and decided to seek surgery instead of the conservative management recommended by UM, I don't blame him moving on. He didn't make a big deal of it, didn't announce his transfer midseason. It wasn't even widely known outside the team circles he wasn't in Ann Arbor until after then champ game I thought.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:37 PM ^
We will have none of that.
McNamara and his father conspired against future Michigan greatness immediately after the Orange Bowl in 2021. His dad even suggested he transfer because of JJ McCarthy's obvious ability. The nerve. Not heeding that advice, McNamara slithered his way into the off-season, not returning telephone calls from the helpless McCarthy, who was befuddled, at times hysterical without Cade's wisdom.
When the season came around, not satisfied with his mistreatment of JJ, Cade blew his opportunity to play meaningful snaps as the team struggled to escape with a 51-7 win over Colorado State, leaving any future possible success in the hands of McCarthy, still suffering without any quarterbacking knowledge only the struggling McNamara could provide.
If that wasn't bad enough already, Cade then had the audacity to suffer an injury to his knee trying to escape two untouched defensive lineman in the garbage time he was lucky enough to be playing in. Then, THEN, he made an independent medical decision and actually left Michigan to find playing time that he was not going to get here.
This is a story of betrayal, a story that gets worse every time I hear it. This, THIS is a story of treachery.

Your post inspired me to "invent a new" word. I put that in quotes because someone likely beat me to it, but here goes:
Snarcasm (alt. Snarkasm): Sarcasm with a heavy, heavy dose of snark.
November 28th, 2023 at 8:35 AM ^
So...a portmanteau?
November 27th, 2023 at 5:55 PM ^
You must be fun at dinner parties.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:21 PM ^
He had every right to leave and seek playing time elsewhere. I for one have no problem with that. Players do not all the time and have the right. Where I have a problem is how he left and things he said.
Look your leaving. No one does it unless they aren’t happy with where they are. Fine but don’t run out the door and bitch about the program because you got beat out. Deal with it. Be mature and just leave.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:26 PM ^
no.
i have no problem with him choosing to shut his season down to get surgery, or with transferring. every player has to look out for themselves, and for their own career. period.
my problem is that he was a captain of a team, chosen by teammates to do so, and he turned from those teammates during the season.
i feel zero anger toward him - he was as responsible as anyone for the team staying together in the 20-21 offseason, and, in some part, that's why we're where we are today - but i'm disappointed with the timing and manner of his departure.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:48 PM ^
He was a Captain, he handled all of it horribly, period.
I'd like to think we're all on a level where we can appreciate the nuance that you can simultaneously greatly appreciate / treasure 2021 of which Cade was integral in and simultaneously be bitterly disappointed with how he handled competition for his position and his ultimate exit from the program.

I mean with that logic you should have the same disdain for any transfer coming to Michigan to play. AJ Barner was a captain for Indiana last year before he transferred to Michigan. Get your head out of your rear end.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:19 PM ^
- Did Barner run out during the year ?
November 27th, 2023 at 8:35 PM ^
no, dear reader, he did not.
indiana lost their finale to purdue on november 26. he announced he was entering the portal on december 4th.

Cade treated JJ bad and wasn't a team player unless he was the starter. He wouldn't help JJ or even answer his calls or texts. Once Cade wasn't the starter anymore he pretty much was not helpful to the team he could have helped JJ while he was the starter when Cade was hurt but instead he left and then talked bad about the school that gave him a chance to play football. Not saying he couldn't have gone to Nevada or other schools but he got a chance to pay here with talent and a great line. He wasn't a good QB by nay means as you could see in Iowa. But surrounded him with a great line and talent and he can game manage your team.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:51 PM ^
He definitely could have handled it better, especially as a captain like you said, but we're also talking about a 22 year old kid who was such a big factor in pulling Michigan off the mat and leading UM to the most successful season in almost 25 years. After accomplishing all that he comes into next camp battling for his job and not even being told whether he won until 2 games into the season.
Now mind you, I don't think Michigan/Harbaugh did anything wrong at all, I'm just trying to look at it from the mindset of Cade, and the mindset of a 22 year old. I understand why he was upset and why he transferred, but I think a true leader handles the situation better and doesn't quit on the team.
If anything it was gracious of Harbaugh to give him a regular season start and the opportunity to win the job even though JJ was clearly the future of the program and was ready now. It was a very difficult situation for Harbaugh to be in (though one of those good problems to have) and someone was ultimately going to be upset. If Cade won the job, I bet JJ strongly considers transferring.
Anyway, it's in the past and I appreciate everything Cade did for the program. Regardless of how he feels about Michigan today, I am thankful for his accomplishments and he should be proud of them. I'll always root for him (except against Michigan)

Cade was one of the first people to respond to Zinter’s out of surgery tweet, so maybe we cut him a break.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:20 PM ^
Is he going to give Iowa Michigan’s playbook?
I liked and respected Cade, but not after what Sam said in his world famous rant after the game.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:21 PM ^
I must of missed it. What did Sam say about Cade?
November 27th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
JJ went to Cade for help when he first got on campus and Cade blew him off.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:39 PM ^
It was more than that. Sam also went on to talk about how "Cade's people" were spreading rumors and backchanneling negative information. Then specifically pointed to "ask Devin" all of the things they were putting out there to stir up if you don't believe him.
It was a surprising rant. Mostly, it just says to me that we're glad he's off somewhere else, and we're all probably better off with the current outcomes as they are. Thanks for the good memories in 2021, now let's celebrate the guys who ACTUALLY play for the team.
Here's the video, story starts around 4:25
November 27th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
He said JJ asked Cade for help or turned to Cade for help to get better and he turned him down. That it didn't sit well with JJ and hurt him. He said it better in his rant.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
Must have. Sorry. Can't help it.
But yeah, he said when JJ showed up basically the first thing he did was reach out to Cade, asking for Cade to help him learn the ropes. Cade then ghosted JJ, and would not help him learn the position. Because he feared (rightly) for his job.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:26 PM ^
'Because he feared (rightly) for his job" - didn't you work as Tonya Harding's defense attorney?
November 28th, 2023 at 10:06 AM ^
I can neither confirm or deny.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
I've heard that Iowa is not only getting Michigan's playbook - but, Rutgers, Ohio State, Purdue, and Catapult have also given's Michigan's signs to them as well.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:55 PM ^
They should try to use it for their own offense.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:54 PM ^
I’m always fascinated by quarterback dynamics. As a fan, I’d love there to be camaraderie. But as individuals, we are selfish. Not many of us would willingly train our replacements if we liked our jobs. 🤷♂️
November 27th, 2023 at 3:21 PM ^
Worst part is all the warehouse walls painted pink.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:22 PM ^
sure, Cade
November 27th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
i don't want to hear about Cade. He left. He's the enemy. I hope we send Iowa into the surface of the sun. Not interested in whatever the latest passive aggressive shots he takes at us because JJ hurt his feelings.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
Yeah, they're kids, though. I wasn't making all my best moves at 18-19. And neither, I suspect, was Sam.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:36 PM ^
Yeah we don't have to crap on everybody all the time. He came here, he did some awesome stuff, he left in a bit of a huff. Let's forgive him and move on.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:54 PM ^
Username does not check out.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
Cade will have a B1G 10 Championship and a B1G 10 runner up to his college record, that's pretty impressive to be honest.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:30 PM ^
Sure and Ty Cobb has record for hits and stolen bases, but doesn't make him any less of a jerk
November 27th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
I missed it, is Cade playing? All?
If they were playing I’d say it’s worth a story or two, but they aren’t.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:38 PM ^
they're both playing rehab.... not the Dr. Drew kind.... the physical therapy kind.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:44 PM ^
Yes, we are aware that he lived in a warehouse in LA.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
Well if this doesn't tell you everything you need to know about Iowa's passing attack.
"Season Leaders"
November 27th, 2023 at 3:56 PM ^
In All's defense, he did only play about half of Iowa's games.
Over the course of a full season, he probably would've had as many receptions as Wilson.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:11 PM ^
It’s not All’s individual totals. It’s that he is the team leader despite only playing half the teams games. That no WR/TE has >300 yds on the season (25 yds/game) says alot
November 27th, 2023 at 4:45 PM ^
Loveland's 37 Rec for 550 yards would be a better direct comparison.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:59 PM ^
Not really in this instance since he's comparing team leaders in receiving. No one in Iowa WR/TE/RB has more than All and he missed a good part of the year.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:47 PM ^
I like Cade. He was a team leader when Michigan went back to restoring themselves to glory. I won't hear any other slander.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^
I think this all came out earlier in the season. I think given how things have worked out it behooves us to be gracious and remember him and All fondly as members of the 2021 team that broke our OSU jinx.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:50 PM ^
She asks really good questions.
November 27th, 2023 at 3:51 PM ^
What ever happened happened… Cade played his part turning the program around and his part in beating the hairless nuts … however you are voted team captain … that carries responsibilities at Michigan … he ran out on the team sorry that will stain his legacy imo
November 27th, 2023 at 3:55 PM ^
Cade did his job when he was the starter. No he didn't leave on the best terms, but I'll still root for him.
November 27th, 2023 at 4:33 PM ^
Great your still planning to root for him, not many fans of 2024 Iowa or 2025 XFL on here.
