Part of the issue, whether…

Part of the issue, whether Jordan, Rose or Ohtani, is that if you are the kind of person who is obsessively competitive and are focusing that obsession on gambling, then you are very likely to eventually go outside of the guardrails and cross a line, threatening the integrity of the game. Additionally, even before you cross that line, approaching it can give the appearance of you going out of bounds. This threatens the perception of the integrity of the game, which is also a major problem. Perception becomes reality when fans determine how to spend their time and money.

The rules have historically been crafted to put the line far enough away from it being a problem to make enforcement easy and to maintain the perception of integrity.  In the past couple of decades, the rules have moved closer to the line.

Transfer rule changes didn’t completely change eligibility requirements. You still have to progress towards a degree to be eligible. If after two years you only have 40 random credits, you aren’t playing.

I like the general concept of changing the FG rules as opposed to eliminating them. FGs should be worth 2-4 points; less points for short, easy FGs and more points for longer FGs and/or a more difficult target (like the center concept mentioned).

I predict many of you young whipper snappers will understand what I mean once the afterglow of this year's title wears off.

For the record, 1989 was a very good year. Rose Bowl win, hoops national championship and the Pistons won the NBA championship.  Don't bag on 1989!

I concur with the general…

I concur with the general sentiment that the trajectory for college football is downward.  There is very, very little hope that the trajectory will change.  I expect college football to be a shell of itself in a few years.

NCAA FBS Football tracks AAA baseball in that it is a combination of a few future big league stars mixed with a bunch of guys who will be happy to get a cup of coffee and even more guys who will never make it.  Of course AAA baseball is a second or third tier spectator sport.  I am not saying the quality is terrible or that people shouldn't watch, just that not that many do and the revenues it generates are quite modest.  NCAA FBS Football has done much a better as a spectator sport and revenue generator due to the deep ttradition, the facade of "amateur scholar-athletes" and the passion of alumni and fans.  With 18 team (and growing) conferences and other changes, the tradition is being hammered. Huge TV contracts, bloated AD staff, players switching schools constantly and all of the NIL money starting to slosh around, the facade of amateurism has been smashed. That brings us to fan/alumni passion, which is really the topic here.  The loss of tradition and the reality that the players really are minor league players is dousing the flames of fan passion rather quickly.

In this view, college football looks destined to fall from its lofty peak and become nothing more than a minor league. Add in the general demographic headwinds that football has (a mostly older audience) and it's hard to see this not occurring. The counterpoint is that college baseball does exist.  In some parts of the country it is quite well received.  It doesn't generate the revenues of football, but it does have passionate fans and does a good job of keeping the college feel.

Where does it end? I lean pessimistic and am very happy that this era ended on a high note for Michigan.

When you’re passing 50x per game as a QB, you are the offense.
When you pass <25, you’re leaning heavily on a running game and passing is a change-up.

I’m not saying JJ can’t carry the weight of a pass heavy NFL style attack, but I am saying he’s never done it. I am also saying that throwing 50 passes over 3 games is simply not the same thing as throwing 50 passes in a single game.

It’s not just sample size, it’s situational. Think about a baseball pitcher throwing a slider100x in a game versus the same pitcher throwing 100 sliders over 3 games. I’m guess his batting average against the slider in those two scenarios would be very different.

That’s not a perfect analogy, but you should get what I am saying.
I think JJ will have at least a good and possibly a great NFL career. That being said, I can see some having doubts.

I don't have a fully formed…

I don't have a fully formed opinion on Shaw as OC, but if did take the job it would clearly be a 1-2 year deal. If he's not getting the job offers he wants, sitting around doing nothing for another year doesn't help him change that. While OC at Michigan is obviously not an NFL job, it is a high profile way to keep your skills honed and show you're still relevant.

I was going to say “What about Army” but you beat me to it.

Then you get cases like Minnesota who fall well short on the conference titles (only 18) but have 7 national titles.

I’d look at winning percentage, both total and years above a threshold as possible good filters. That would weed out those FBS schools that were good for a few decades 50 years ago.

Only 6 schools have a winning percentage above .700. They are M, ND, TX, AL, OSU, OK

I think the "right" NFL job…

I think the "right" NFL job is and maybe has been Plan A. The question is how "right" is defined. If Coach Harbaugh's definition is highly selective and narrow, I am ok with that.  He came really close to winning a Super Bowl. Now that he's won at Michigan, I can imagine the draw of taking another crack at a Super Bowl win being very strong.

That being said, I also buy the narrative that Coach Harbaugh highly values relationships. If Michigan offers him the best relationship, I think he might choose that over even a very good NFL offer.

I have no problem with his…

I have no problem with his decision and wish him nothing but the best, but I fail to see how this is a hard decision for him. By staying he gets to hang with his teammates for a few more weeks, get the CFB swag and memories plus maybe get the ultimate swag, a championship ring. If I was in his shoes and knew I was only going to play scout team and never get an actual game snap, I’d still make this call alll day, every day. It’s not a heroic call; it’s an obvious call.

I think Harbaugh and staff are the ones who deserve the credit for allowing him to do this. It shows that they are interested in what is best for the player. Playing out the year and then transferring is the “having his cake and eating it too”/best case scenario for CJ and the staff is giving him that. I’m sure CJ has friends and they’ll like having him around, but his benefit to the team the next few weeks is minimal. The staff is allowing him to stay because it’s good for him and the nice thing to do. Good for the staff and good for CJ.

It was not a spectacular…

It was not a spectacular acrobatic catch, but it was a game winner on 4th down and time running out: Dreisbach to Hayes vs UVA. At the time, it also capped Michigan’s biggest comeback. Michigan trailed 17-0. Other fun facts include Lloyd’s head coaching debut, both teams were AP top 20.

Mercury Hayes is #10 on the list and he played alongside #4 Toomer.

Clearly Fran should be fired.

According to this bit from the Washington Post, Mahomes will likely be out of the league as well:
“The red crowd lingered in the bottom ring of Arrowhead booing until it sounded like a collective moan, and on the sideline Mahomes rampaged, screaming toward the officials so furiously that it took four men to hold him back.”

Once we get Juwan, Fran and Mahomes out, we can work on the rest. Hopefully we will can have sports without raised voices.
