Mike Martin likes Pop Evil...why can't you?
March 25th, 2012 at 11:08 AM ^
Because they are horrible. Really, very terrible and horrible in every way.

That is the beauty of music. Regardless, it's a sweet pic of him.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:53 PM ^
No. This is not ok. As the inventor of music, I can tell you that this is not what I had in mind. There are rules in music and you are not allowed to just ignore them when its convenient for you. We are a nation of laws.
Yeah, this is not 'Nam, there are rules here.
Not anymore bro! It's 2012 and the world is going to end in 9 months!
Would've been funnier if you had messed up and used "its."
Also, stylistically, write out numbers ten or less.
March 25th, 2012 at 11:14 AM ^
OP has a point, you know. "The players like it" is the catch-all excuse for wearing stupid uniforms, isn't it? Anyone who's ever said that, IME, now has no choice but to accept Pop Evil, too.

I could ask the same about the jerseys.
March 25th, 2012 at 11:27 AM ^
Why don't you whine about it a little more. I'm not sure we got the point the first time.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:18 PM ^
This jersey debate kills me. Never thought that something so superficial (color of facemasks or numbers on the helmet) could cause people to bicker so much about something that deserves your undying support. Whatever is good for the kids is good for me.

March 25th, 2012 at 12:39 PM ^
It's sad, some people care more about what the football team looks like than the school it represents.
"Why don't you whine about it some more?"
Oh wait....you mean that it's OK now to make a point more than once? Who'd've thought. Novel concept, really. Guess I'll drop the Mean Girls act.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:11 PM ^
For one, we have no idea what the players like. Do you really expect those guys to come out and say "Pop Evil sucks" or "I wish DB would stop messing with the best uniform in sports"?
Exactly. I can't believe, for example, that 100+ college guys are unanimous on everything, even things like numbers on the helmets, and it wouldn't even be remotely healthy for there to be a public disagreement about it.
March 25th, 2012 at 11:16 AM ^
Mike Martin destroys them in the next picture. You can tell by the looks on their faces they know it's coming.

I hate NB, but more people willing to put their money where their mouth is seems like a good indication of popularity.
Popular is not always superior. Hence, why I used 'superior' based on volume sales, not 'popular'
How do you determine superiority? Once again, I hate NB, but this is a snobs argument.
More people like option A, but they don't know that option A is inferior to option B. Therefore, the option B is superior to option A (bc I know better).
Beyond the fact that one of your premises states that the more popular option is inferior to the less popular option, that is not his argument. I can give you an equally shallow and inadequate argument for popularity. Option A wins more accolades and collaborates with more musically talented and successful individuals, but more people with little musical background like Option B more. More people liking your music makes you superior Therefore, Option B is superior. Equally lacking. If no one ever heard any of Mozart's symphonies, would NB be better musicians than he was? No.
He also does not indicate that he knows better. All he was stating is that popularity is not always indicative of superiority. Superiority comes from complexity, depth, substance, appreciative value (popularity to an extent), rarity, uniqueness, innovation, etc. Popularity is a facet of it but not indicative of superiority. Do most people really have a grasp or understanding of music to really appreciate what makes some music better than others? No, well not really. Most (myself included) cannot tell you why Beethoven and Mozart were geniuses and most would either say they suck, they do not like that type of music, or that they can appreciate their talent but just do no understand classical music. People just have different interests and some music resonates better with them. That being said NB and Evil Pop suck.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:14 PM ^
While I agree with what you are saying in general, your example makes the assumption that NB's music is more readily available than BK's, which isn't true.
Disagree in part. While you can certainly purchase both NB and BK on itunes etc. and listen to both on youtube try driving around most of America and listen to commercial radio, NB is played far more than BK. So while both are readily available, both are certainly not marketed equitable, not even close.
I know eventually it's about the fast money for the suits (we are capitalists after all), but in 50 years the art is what will hold value. BK will be listened to by future generations far more than NB.
Sometimes I am just fed up with the over marketization of crap to our kids instead of real music artists. We now equate popularity with superiority and this is a slippery slope.

I'm a blue hair and I really like them and the song. How many teams have their own pep song? Michigan has more songs than almost any university. Go to a glee club concert and get a small selection out of huge repertoire. Some may be outdated but they're representative of the time they're written. The reaction in alumni section didn't seem at all negative. Many I'm sure maybe indifferent.
Keep in mind that in the 60's the most popular local band was Bob Seger. For those who remember Shakey Jake, another local star at the time was Washboard WIllie and His Super Suds of Rhythm.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:21 PM ^
When I was in High School we used Seger's "Heavy Music" and "2+2" to pump ourselves up.

Ask yourself: In 20 years, will this still sound good?
March 25th, 2012 at 12:08 PM ^
What type of music can you really say that and still think it sounds good? Not much. I would only say that IMO (I am 28), Sinatra, some Elvis tunes, and some 80s rock still have an appeal to me. 80s hair metal, disco, early rap, and all country not done by Garth Brooks sounds like garbage to me.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:11 PM ^
They would have had to sound good in the first place in order to still sound good in 20 years....and they don't so the point is moot.

March 25th, 2012 at 12:23 PM ^
I did listen to it and the lyrics are what bother me the most.
"In the Big House, we'll put your lights out! Come on and shout out!"? Sorry, it sounds like a 5th grader wrote this.
March 25th, 2012 at 12:51 PM ^
That's right up there with the following sophisticated lyrics:
"Go right through for MSU,
Watch the points keep growing,
Spartan teams are bound to win,
They're fighting with a vim!
Rah! Rah! Rah!
See their team is weakening,
We're going to win this game,
Fight! Fight! Rah! Team, Fight!
Victory for MSU!"
I don't care what they look like or where they're from. The lyrics are juvenile and the music is warmed over metal.

Really, their problem is they come from West Michigan? That seems to be the least of the issues I have with them.
I wish I could vote this up more than once.

the band itself or "in the big house" ............I don't listen to the band, "in the bighouse" I thought was good for converting a fight song into a rock theme that is still safe for little ears and the bluehairs.............. seriously what else are you going to do with it and keep it family friendly.....
All in all people take their music, I say that loosely, as personal as they do their sports teams, some even more personally. Heck scroll through each band or vocalists videos on youtube and you see nearly as many haters as there are fans posting back and forth...and no shot at anyone on this board but music fans are as bias as any without regard for true talent when it comes to musicians. I may not like many bands or artists per say but I do know who is talented and who is all show and little talent.....there is a major difference some understand nothing about music but know how to entertain, others are great musically but need tons of help to entertain...few are both....
March 25th, 2012 at 12:29 PM ^
It pumps up the crowd. Apparently the players like it. The opposing team and fans surely don't like it. You should all stop being old and stupid and get over it. It's better than AC/DC, isn't it? It's all ours.
