MacDonald: Target for Raven's DC position
Ei Ei Does he Go?
Not surprised if he ends up going back to the Ravens but wouldn't Mike have better job security at Michigan?

"I know somebody here. I met him on a train. His name is.... His name is.... James.... No. His name is.... James Josephson. No, no! James Lawrence. Lawrence. Lawrence. Lawrence F-- Lawrence Fells. Lawrence Fings. Forrest Lawrenceton. His name is James Jestenthen. Lawrence Jesterton. -Lawrence Jamieson? -Yes. Yes! Yes."
I think Forrest Lawrenceton should be the new DC.

Would Fangio be an upgrade over Macdonald?
January 25th, 2022 at 11:29 PM ^
Fangio is probably a top 5 DC in the NFL. I'd be shocked if none of the 9 or whatever new HCs in the NFL hire him.
January 25th, 2022 at 11:33 PM ^
Martindale left because he butted heads with the head coach, couldn’t keep his foot out of his mouth at press conferences and is getting plenty of nfl dc interest. Don’t think that’s happening
January 25th, 2022 at 8:52 PM ^
First, are you surprised he was named as one of four to keep your eye on? Of course not. But does not mean he is gone.
But when you hire talented coaches there is a chance they move on. Getting upset over every rumor is a waste of energy.
January 25th, 2022 at 8:57 PM ^
Look at this guy, all theoretical and rational and shit. Have you not met our fanbase, or pretty much any member of any fanbase in sports?
January 25th, 2022 at 9:02 PM ^
Jokes aside, I'm surprised Fangio isn't being mentioned as a rumored hire here. I know everyone is going youthful these days, but he's coached there before and even if he may not be a head coach his defenses are never weak.
January 25th, 2022 at 8:53 PM ^
He’s gonna leave soon anyway. Question is whether he wants to be in the NFL or in the college level. Considering how NFL teams are actively seeking young HCs now, it may actually be easier to get a NFL HC position for him compared to a good power 5 HC position. Colleges seem to still value HC experience more and the usual path is more often than not going to be group of 5/smaller power 5 then big power 5. You’re looking at multiple rebuilds with that path.
January 25th, 2022 at 8:56 PM ^
There are 65 power 5 programs and 32 NFL teams
January 25th, 2022 at 8:59 PM ^
Yes but there’s a difference between a smaller power 5 program and a bigger power 5 one. Technically Rutgers and Alabama are both power 5 jobs. But nobody in their right mind would consider them the same. That is not the case in the NFL.
January 25th, 2022 at 8:55 PM ^
Harbaugh hasn't even said he will stay at Michigan. What job security is known to be here for him. It's possible he would be retained, but it's also possible a new HC would want his own DC.
January 25th, 2022 at 8:58 PM ^
Mike Preston, Baltimore Sun Sports Columnist who posted that rumor on Twitter, is nothing more than their version of Drew Sharp or Ranier Sabin. His job as a columnist is to generate clicks for his newspaper, and WolverineWire is doing the same by posting Preston's rumor on their website.

I think this one does have some legs though as Michigan beat writers have posted on Twitter that Macdonald is not out recruiting like the rest of the staff. Michigan is instead sending a GA Dylan Roney in Macdonalds territory. He has also put OLB as his bio on Twitter for the time being.
January 26th, 2022 at 7:08 AM ^
A HS recruit would probably view being recruited by a GA instead of a coach as a sign of disrespect - that the recruit is not worthy of a coaches time.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:31 AM ^
True but all the GA would have to tell them is "I'm here cause our DC might be leaving to go back to the NFL." And if the recruit asked "why would he do that" just say "cause he's not 100% sure the HC isn't doing the same thing."
See? Easy explanation and nobody will feel disrespected.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:41 AM ^
Is this really true? I don’t believe GA’s are allowed to recruit off campus.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:04 PM ^
I’d bet NFL teams want to see more than one good season as a DC before they bite, but maybe John Harbaugh is already convinced.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:14 PM ^
Sam says no worries. Enjoy sparty's loss.

I welcome the dong punches.

Drop bears are known for their dong punches.

Harbaugh giveth and Harbaugh taketh away.
To everything (turn, turn, turn). There is a season...
January 25th, 2022 at 10:02 PM ^
That a reporter tweets to keep an eye on Coach MacDonald while naming other candidates does not suggest he is a candidate or "target". Have the impression Coach MacDonald really likes being the DC at Michigan. Might be an HC candidate here eventually too.
January 25th, 2022 at 10:17 PM ^
Could explain Elston coming home, no? For the DC coaching position, not the DL coaching position.
January 25th, 2022 at 10:50 PM ^
I could see Elston becoming the DC / DL coach if it goes that way. Would hope that Clink and Bellamy would stay. Not sure about Helow. All conjecture of course, but it would make sense.
January 26th, 2022 at 7:59 AM ^
Its speculated that Freeman took over DC duties after the half in ND's bowl game. Hence one of the reasons why Elston jumped ship.
January 25th, 2022 at 10:41 PM ^
Well, if we're going to suffer dong punches, we should at least consider a good, hard-wearing carbon steel cup...
January 25th, 2022 at 10:49 PM ^
Dong punches never seemed to bother Iron Balls McGinty
January 25th, 2022 at 10:52 PM ^
He gone
January 25th, 2022 at 11:21 PM ^
They can have Mattison.
January 25th, 2022 at 11:27 PM ^
Why would he have better job security at Michigan?
January 25th, 2022 at 11:35 PM ^
Of course Macdonald is going to get a look but this ‘report’ contains less substance than the average harbaugh has interest in the nfl clickbait rumor.
January 26th, 2022 at 2:32 AM ^
his wife also had a tweet recently that seemed like a thinly veiled goodbye and thank you to the michigan family. along with the other smoke, this sounds like a fait accompli.
January 26th, 2022 at 4:52 AM ^
Seems like a solid vote of confidence for staying.
January 26th, 2022 at 6:27 AM ^
They gone.
January 26th, 2022 at 1:55 PM ^
Hard to read the mind of a former NFL cheerleader. Inscrutable.
January 26th, 2022 at 7:26 AM ^
Having waded through all the "wonderful" takes leaves me with "Paranoia strikes deep. Into our life it will creep. It starts when your always afraid..."
January 26th, 2022 at 7:39 AM ^
With the portal and coaches jumping ship every 1/2 years college is becoming harder and harder to follow along with. It's become a lot less enjoyable.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:07 AM ^
Hence why NIL is becoming more and more important. You will draw in recruits, and potentially retain them (depending on the contracts)
January 26th, 2022 at 8:20 AM ^
Isn't this to be expected? Wouldn't Michigan's new head coach after Harbaugh goes to the Dolphins/Bears/Vikings/Raiders/etc. want to bring in his own staff?
January 26th, 2022 at 8:32 AM ^
It would surprise me if John just went after Macdonald without having a discussion with Jim 1st.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
John is now on the hot seat....
January 26th, 2022 at 11:53 AM ^
You think that the John who signed a contract extension like yesterday is on the hot seat?
January 26th, 2022 at 8:53 AM ^
This is really odd. Then again, life is really odd. What else can you do but laugh at this point?
January 26th, 2022 at 9:13 AM ^
That story was pure speculation. Lists a couple guys they are interviewing and says to also “keep an eye on” Macdonald and Weaver. Just throwing names out there. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen, but just tossing names out at this point.
January 26th, 2022 at 10:22 AM ^
MacDonald is not leaving this off-season. He loves the college game. Source: guy who delivered my pizza last night.
January 26th, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
The narrative of “why would John do this to Jim” is ludicrous. When the MacDonald hire was first announced it was with the commentary that he was being groomed to be a DC a in the NFL a in a few years. Him reaching back to someone who he knows, trusts and is obviously a fan is should be a surprise to no one. Maybe it’s a few years sooner than expected, but expected nonetheless. How is this not a conversation that John and Jim already had …. Like “hey he’s good and I’m sure I’ll be knocking back on your door to get him back if Wink leaves”. This is part of the reason Clink was named to a elevated Defensive position. He would probably take over if MacDonald leaves.
January 26th, 2022 at 11:20 AM ^
Hope he stays. Derek Mason just hired by OK State. He would have been a good replacement if Mac leaves.
January 26th, 2022 at 1:26 PM ^
Word on another site is he will be offered the job, likely today and will accept. He's gone
January 26th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
Well, if it’s stated somewhere on the internet that he will be gone today, then that answers the question.
