CC: How does Alabama having a vacancy affect Michigan?

Submitted by TheCube on January 10th, 2024 at 7:32 PM

Does it make Harbaugh more likely to stay? Does it make a potential coaching search more difficult if Michigan were not to pursue an in-house option?
Is there a domino effect with assistants being poached?

Discuss - as WD would say.

My only fear is that whoever Bama hires their coach from (or whoever that school hires their coach from) goes after Moore, and Harbaugh decides to leave after Moore has taken a HC job somewhere else. My absolute worst nightmare is if Arizona is involved in this carousel and Fisch won't come here either. I honestly don't know where we'd go at that point, assuming Minter follows Harbaugh..

It doesn’t impact Harbaugh at all, but if Harbaugh stays there’s a good chance Sherrone Moore is a candidate for whatever school Alabama hires from (Oregon for instance).

Alabama is very likely to poach a sitting head coach from a prominent program. He'll bring most of his staff along leaving  bunch of openings. That domino effect could have some effect, but probably a minor one, if Michigan embarks on a coaching search. If we don't, it's unlikely to make any difference to us.

Harbaugh leaving Michigan for the NFL would make as much sense as Beilein leaving Michigan for the NBA.  No coach in their right mind would make that move.

Harbaugh is a made man at Michigan.  He's 60 years old and has nothing left to prove.  His chances of getting back to the Super Bowl are not good.  His chance of remaining a contender in college football are very good.  He's at home in Ann Arbor and loves his job.

Very likely - no impact whatsoever.

Though - on the periphery - if Lanning goes to Tuscaloosa - who does Oregon go after?  That’s the only scenario that concerns me.

They go after nobody who has anything to do with Michigan.  Idk, there's just no reason to worry about any of this affecting our staff.

Mike McDonald getting HC interviews could lead to the Ravens offering Minter their DC position.

Carroll out at Seattle opens up a potential landing spot in the NFL for Coach Harbaugh.

Saban retiring really doesn't affect our team at all.

Are we worried Oregon comes after Sherrone Moore? That'd be my only 'concern' if you can call it that. And I don't see a scenario in which Moore would leave Michigan now anyway.

If Harbaugh leaves, I think Moore gets promoted. If Harbaugh stays (please dear baby Jesus let this happen) the staff stays intact as it is.

I did take a look at the Vegas odds, and they had Moore as only a 25/1 shot, better odds than Sark according to them. I don't really believe that's a possibility, but that would be something.

DeBeor is a potential candidate for that job, and would also maybe be a candidate for a Michigan outside hire, I don't think most of us would want an outside hire, but if you're worried about the availability of that guy, then sure, could impact that.

Seems like it'll probably be Lanning and wrapped up quickly, though.

I think that Alabama will talk to Sarkisian first but I don't think he will leave Texas.  If Harbaugh leaves I would go after DeBoer.  I like Moore/Minter but they don't have head coaching experience and I like DeBoer better anyways. I am assuming Harbaugh will take Minter with him...
