Mike Elston
Keep an eye on Mike Elston. UM grad and former player. Close family friend. There is mutual interest. Let's see where this goes. Chalk it up as contact made for now. Obviously, Chris Bryant has come up in various circles over the last two days too.

and . . .

And... he has been ND's recruiting coordinator among other things. Recruiting sound like something we could use some help with? I'd say, "yes"!
Thanks UMBig11!

dont care who your recruiter is, need to win and the top recruits will come, a good recruiter helps sure but gotta beat osu and msu

No, that is how YOU see them. Quit projecting onto kids you dont know the first thing about. The whining and defeatism in this fan base is digusting. Oh woe is me. Bunch of fucking snowflakes.

This type of negative post that states facts everyone is well aware of adds absolutely nothing to the discussion. On top of that, it's overused and makes you, the poster, sound like a whiner. My suggestion is to give it a rest and maybe consider some other way to vent your frustration.

Thank you for your incredibly valuable contribution to the discussion.

Maybe to you but I bet if you ask anyone in that lockerroom they would disagree. As much hate as there is for MSU(myself included) on this board I would hardly call them irrelevant.

Thanks UMBig11!.
Checked out his latest video interview and its clear; this guy is a closer.

Is this if we lose Partridge?
Elston is a defensive coach at Notre Dame. Thought the D staff was pretty set
January 10th, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
Thought CP was pretty much set to return after the offer we made him? Elston has coached ST and TEs in the past as well, and he's a big recruiting guy. This would be a big move in that:
1. Notre Dame trade secrets
2. Recruiting coordinator of the main competitor for Nicholas Petit-Frere

Better to seem fickle than to actually be Fickell...

He is the only coach who could earnestly mimic the famous Laugh-In "Flying Fickle Finger Of Fate" each week as award, or indeed, "The Flying Fickell Finger Of Fate", although I cannot imagine the circumstances under which Luke would give out such an award.

That, or he seems like a guy who picks up the phone and agrees to have a conversation when the coach of his alma mater calls to gauge his interest in returning.

Mike Elko makes a lateral move to Texas A&M. Harry Hiestand goes to the NFL. If Mike Elston leaves ND, ND will probably lose 3 of their best assistants and/or recruiters in one offseason.

I think this one would be the most jarring, though, as Elston has worked for Kelly since his CMU days.

I was surprised by the Washington hire. Do we need to bring in another defensive coach? The defense seemed to be doing pretty well.

To be fair to Don Brown and the defense, Michgian was outscored 37 - 0 in the fourth quarter of their 5 loses. So basically, the D gave up one TD and the O couldn't score one single point. Michigan wins a couple of those games with a simple field goal in the fourth quarter while the D was holding on for dear life.

Not their fault at all. Not even an iota. When your offense is so putrid that your defense has to carry the entire load in virtually every game, when your defense finds itself playing significantly more snaps than your offense in every single game, and when your offense repeatedly turns the ball over and regularly puts your defense in short field situations, at some point they'll buckle and give up plays. Every defense does that. You can't complain about the handful of plays given up by a defense that finished the season ranked no. 3 in the country (despite replacing 10 starters) when you have an offense that finished in the triple digits and never did the defense any favors.
With the lone exception of the Penn State loss, it's totally insane to put any of the blame for this season's results on the defense. It was the defense that put us in a position to win the MSU game despite 5 turnovers by the offense, fergodsakes. If it wasn't for that defense, we would have finished 5-7 or worse instead of 8-5.

Considering Enos is supposedly the 10th Asst. Coach with Washington coming in for Smith. But, then again, you mention Chris Bryant so I'm wondering if this is a possible analyst spot? Anything about Mattison (I hope not)?
I love what you share, UMB11, but I wish you could give more context. lol

I think promoted in title only. He's been with Kelly for 14 years now. In the past few years Kelly has now hired 2 additional DCs without promoting him to the DC slot or even co-DC slot.
So who knows? Maybe he knows his ceiling is limited there & it's time to lateral over somewhere else.
In theory we could bring him to ST or something & primarily use him for ND/Kelly institutional knowledge as well as recruiting.
