The coaches always planned to take another DE in the class, and with Oweh dropping them and Anoma almost certain to go to Alabama, Michigan didn’t wait long to move on their next target, das unglaubliche 6’6”/250 Deutsch ende Julius Welschof.
Welschof was on Michigan’s radar since impressing the coaches—particularly Mattison—at their mid-June camp. He was committed to Georgia Tech until Michigan moved on him late last week. Še das d' kemma bisd, der Moritz Wagner des amerikanischen fußballs!
More informative update kommen.

Most interesting hat ceremony ever. Choosing between some paper and a pen, or a variety of salt and pepper shakers.

Wait until a kid commits at the Seder table

Did anyone else have no idea they played "American Football" in Germany? This is incredible news to me.
December 20th, 2017 at 11:52 AM ^
american football has been on an absolute boom over there lately. Viewership for nfl games went up from 5-10 thousand viewers a few years ago to over 1 million this year. Here's to hoping Harbaugh opens a Germany recruiting pipeline. When I think 'German athlete' I think tight end or fullback, what could be more Harbaugh?
December 20th, 2017 at 12:56 PM ^
We need more German linebackers. For the blitzing.

Springtime for Harbaugh and Michigan.
Winter for Ohio and Michigan State.

Hey, Julius' decision to make the switch and come here couldn't have been easy. I give him credit for making the right choice, it was a real Triumph of the Will...
December 20th, 2017 at 9:53 AM ^
Can't decide if this is funny or evil.
December 20th, 2017 at 10:00 AM ^
It's both. It's...Fevil...

Hey, if the Lion King can get away with a Triumph of the Will reference - brilliantly, I might add - who would I be to ding anyone else for it?

Probably the one time in this blog's history where grüß Gott would have been an acceptable replacement to hello.

Great move. Now if we can get a commit from Israel. I'd love to brush up on my Hebrew.

Moin moin!
December 20th, 2017 at 9:08 AM ^
are we just going to keep taking dudes, regardless of need, ranking, scholarships available, etc. and then figure out the logistics later? If that is the deal I am cool with it, just going to take some some getting used to. Welcome, Mr. Welschof.

He's the #1 player in the country.

Too bad you won't be able to showcase your abilities in the olympics.
December 20th, 2017 at 10:14 AM ^
He can still showcase them, just not as a Russian Olympian, but just a generic Olympian.
December 20th, 2017 at 9:10 AM ^
December 20th, 2017 at 9:18 AM ^
247 has him as the #12 SDE, #323 overall...
ESPN didn't scout him and Rivals gave him a generic 3 star because he's from Germany. That kills your 247 composite score. But the only recruiting service to actually scout him thinks he's a 4-star... Stop freaking out.
December 20th, 2017 at 12:13 PM ^
from rivals? Is that a thing?
December 20th, 2017 at 9:22 AM ^
much Harbaughs approach. He just puts a bunch of names in a hat and pulls a few out. Whoever's name gets pulled they offer them a scholarship, they never worry about need or stars it's all just random.
They saw this kid in person at a camp and Mattison worked with him. They liked what they saw and that is why they went after him.
December 20th, 2017 at 9:29 AM ^
Yep--except for when he goes with the good old fashioned throw darts at the wall approach. That's why we pay him the big bucks!
December 20th, 2017 at 10:49 AM ^
That they only put the absolute best names in the hat.

Solid passively aggressive concern troll... Well done!
December 20th, 2017 at 9:36 AM ^
we're going to take players regardless of need, ranking, and scholarships available. obviously. because the staff has no idea how recruiting or roster-building works, unlike random message board blowhard.
December 20th, 2017 at 9:39 AM ^
was kidding. Lighten up.
December 20th, 2017 at 9:40 AM ^
...my sarcasm meter was on the blink, there. my apologies.
December 20th, 2017 at 9:43 AM ^
wasn't really like /s type sarcasm. It is just that in the last couple of days we have offered and accepted a basketball flip with no other football offers and today we flipped a German defensive end from Georgia Tech. I know this guy was highly rated, these have not not been typical commits. The way I framed the comment was stupid. It was a joke that came out poorly.

This I can upvote - 'jerks jerkin up the wonderland' is a gold reference worth repeating!
