The last time the OSU line was completely dominated by a single player like they were it was Buffalo's Khalil Mack (2.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles, not sure on rushes).  Good company.

Some schools sent tuition bills to the kids who opted out.  That can be a rather large bill and may have influenced some decisions.

Jeter, Walker, Vizquel and the asshat Schilling. I'd consider Bonds, Clemens and Ramirez after they are dead - don't give em the satisfaction during their lifetime. They got their satisfaction with their roids.

They moved the bands to the upper part of the bowl on the southeast end.  Watching other bands last year, it takes a long time to get them to the field.  Yes, a crappy move.

different programming

While I admire the girl scout program, I have always preferred the boy scout model of older scouts training younger scouts.  Having a GS troop which consists of only girls in the same grade, misses out on that.

other countries

The US BSA was one of the last countries which was not co-ed.  Talked with Canadian scout leaders once at an event when I saw their female boy scouts and asked if it caused any problems.  They said no.  Venturing has been co-ed for some time with no problems that I am aware, and it wasn't a problem in the troop where I was committee chairman.  Things change, and BSA has had a numbers problem for some time.  This was inevitable in my opinion.

trails in Yosemite

Depending on your hiking ability, take the Panorama Trail from Glacier Point over to Nevada Falls and then down to Vernal Falls on the way back to the valley. For a shorter hike, the 4 mile trail from Glacier Point to the valley floor has some great scenery as well.

I've wanted to take the hike and climb half dome but the permit deadline is March 31st and I realized it too late the year I went.  There are some last minute permits issued but hard to come by.  Make sure you go to Mariposa Grove, which I think reopens this year.

That said, just about any hike in and around the valley is spectacular.

Yosemite

Agree with the comments about Yosemite. It has become my favorite park.  The valley is spectacular and there's just something about standing next to and being completely dwarfed by a 2,000 year old giant sequoia.  Can't wait to see Mariposa Grove when they re-open it this year.  Nine of us, arm to arm, could't get around one of the giant sequoias.  Would like to get to Sequoia NP as well.

There's a surprising amount of variety in Olympic NP.  Everything from mountains, glaciers and about 70 miles of untouched pacific coastline.

Affluenza

Agree.  Because nothing said student-athlete like allowing your "student" to take off the spring semester after winning the Heisman.  Purely for academic reasons, I'm sure.

Pitino

Pitino:  Like father, like son.

the goal is to get the top 2 teams

The goal of the playoffs is to make sure they get the top two teams.  Since there are 3 top teams this year (all 11-1 with decent schedules), I'd say they were successful with this year's picks.

If you want more than 4, start paying the kids since you are extending their "amateur" seasons once again, and the NCAA will make even more boatloads of cash.

Price v. Hurst

It would be worth the price of admission just to watch Price v. Hurst.

12/9 game v. UCLA

They need to be back by December so we can have Louis Vuitton night at Crisler.  It's going to be fun watching UCLA highlights from away games this year just to see some creativity in the student sections.

press box

Touchdown Jesus would have been to your left -  at the "open end" of the stadium.  My guess is you were obstructed by the club seats also to your left if you were near the top

I was in the end zone to your left and it seemed like the only speakers were coming from those by the videoboard.  I can't imangine sitting near the speakers.

video board

I was at the game as well as my son is a freshman there.  The videoboard is attached to the building opposite of the Touchdown Jesus endzone.  They purposely didn't build a 4th building so as to not block that iconic view.  They even took down the little scoreboard from that end so you can see the Word of Life even better from the stadium  The only way your view of the Word of Life would have been blocked by the videoboard would be if you were standing behind the videoboard which would have put you outside the stadium.

I would agree with you about the speakers.

Yosemite

Glacier Point has fantastic views of Yosemite Valley and Half Dome.  You can then hike down to the valley floor on the scenic Four Mile trail.  The hike up to the top of Nevada Falls is strenuous but worth ever step.  The Mist Trail is packed through Vernal Falls but the crowds don't usually head up higher to Nevada.

Hydrate, everyone

My urologist told me that just about anyone could have kidney stones if they don't hydrate properly. Nothing quite like having razor wire draging its way across your insides.  I've had one and hopefully never have another.  Everyone on this board, drink lots of water on a regular basis.  A good way to practice your chugging.

Midwest gig

Agree with your comment about a gig in NW Indiana.  If Kelly doesn't turn it around next fall, I would think this could be a distinct possibility.

conflicted parties

Speaking of conflicted parties, does anyone know where the teams, including Michigan, get their referees for spring football?

drawing of the first blue line

Fascinating analysis, but is there anyone else who thinks the first blue line is drawn at the incorrect angle?  It seems off a bit to me: lower on the y axis, if you will, than it should be.

Indians

Big Tribe fan here surprised at their surge this year. I expected it to come next year.  As for the Tigers-Tribe series, I'd hope for the Indians to lock things up quickly and then rest the starters if I were you.  That said, Franconna may be angling for the no. 2 spot to get home field in the ALDS so he may keep pressing.  It's great for September/October baseball to be relevant again.

his last hs football game

I saw his last high school game in Cleveland where Fremont Ross lost to Massillon Washington in the state playoffs.  He was amazing.  The Massillon fans taunted both Charles and his teammates mercilessly as they came off the filed (the Freemont locker room was on the Massillon side of the field).  Kids had tears in their eyes and looked up in astonishment.  Charles gave them a double bird.  I had attended the game rooting for Massillon but was so ashamed of the behavor I witnessed that I wrote a letter apologizing to the Fremont coach.  Knowing little about Mr. Woodson at the time, I ended the letter with something like "if he continues to keep his head on straight, he will go far."  Little did I know.  And he did.  Both as a person and as a player.

Le capitaine

The Canadiens use their history and tradition in social media and in general just about better than anyone.  If I was the UM athletic department I would study how they do what they do.  Right now, a lot of pictures of Max on the Canadiens instagram account (canadiensmtl). Congratulations, Max, and continue to hold the torch high.   Go Habs Go!

Dean

Dean went to Dr. James Andrews for his second opinion who cleared him to play.  Dr. Andrews isn't exactly chopped liver in the medical field.  That said, I don't want to ever hear that UM is relying on medical hardships to clear roster spots.  It's too shady of an area and the kids get the shaft, a la Dean.

Atty

Better call Saul.

Tribe

At this point, I'll take anything to get my mind off the Tribe, so keep those Browns rumors flying!  Those of you in southeast Michigan, need to really appreciate what you have with your Tigers.  Cabrerra is worth the price of admission.

There was this time I was

There was this time I was driving on the highway in the middle of nowhere on the way to a meeting and I had aparently eaten something very unsettling.  Thankfully, there was a rest area up ahead and the bathrooms were open.  Ohhh, I read the question wrong?

post

This may be the finest post Seth has written to date.  Well done, sir.

Which is why

Which is why UM and the others can't state the start times until closer to the day of the game and not before the start of the season.

Nike ad

There was recently an article about Mavrick Carter, one of LBJ's marketing guys, and he talked about how they basically wanted to focus the ads from his sponsors in a way that LBJ wanted it to go - sort of a creative license.  Thought of that when I saw the Nike, Sprite and Beats commercials.  A savy business move on the part of the LBJ camp.

I agree, Ijohn

Just about everyone on this blog smirked when Hart made the little brother comment, myself included.  Dantonio is a master of motivation, and continuing to use that comment is a very smart move on his part.  He'll use the spike next year.  As much as I hate to admit this, he's backing up his "pride comes before the fall" comment.  The way to defeat this narrative is to start winning ballgames.

new tradition?

Maybe we have a new organic tradition that's starting.  Play it at the end of the third quarter or something and let the stadium get its funk on.  Wisconsin has jump around, so why not UM and the Atomic Dog?

Happy Thanksgiving

Dang, you all have like a really long Christmas shopping season, eh?

Happy Thanksgiving.

UM ND

I went to the Notre Dame campus and game for the first time for Denard's breakout game.  I wasn't sure what to expect.  I went into the cathedral to see what it was like inside and saw nmany UM and ND fans sitting in the same pew, each saying a quick prayer before the game.  I realized then this was no ordinary rivalry.  There was a mutual respect.  Even inside the stadium, I had a great time BS'ing with ND fans. Afterwards, no fights or beer thrown on me, just everyone filing out and on their way to a party or something.  Tradition, football and academic excellence and probably a mutual respect for each other's programs (even if each is not willing to admit it to the other).  I'm going to miss it greatly.

extremes of possibilty

"You should never project anything at the extremes of possibility because probability is going to make you pay for that, son."

Precisely why I cringe every time I see Woodson in the same sentence as Peppers.

That's why I hate to see Woodson mentioned in the same sentence as Peppers.

Clark and York

I realize the troubles that Clark and York got into were very different at UM, but it seems they both came from similar backgrounds  - the streets.  We don't know what either player is like to be around when with the staff and we don't know how many chances York had. Fortunately we were able to get through to Clark, but unfortunately for York he's going to have to find his way in life elsewhere.

B1G East vote

Indiana now feels like I did in the 1970's when the Toronto Blue Jays first joined MLB, and I didn't have to worry about my Indians finishing dead last in the AL East for at least a few years.

returning home

There are plenty of UM fans in the Cleveland area, and many people in Cleveland are also pulling for a comeback in Detroit economically as well because we both know what if feels like to be crapped on by the national press.  His letter about returning home to an area where things need to be earned applies equally to Detroit and northern Ohio.  This is very good news for downtown Cleveland and the bars, restaurants and hotels, to say nothing of the fortunes of the basketball team.

trade

I haven't been putting much weight into the rumors so far, but in light of the trade for cap space I think something has to be brewing.

Oh Canada - Edmonton

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meLpuF9UMvk

Not sure how to embed the video here, but one of the best renditions of any national anthem in my opinion was during the 2006 Stanley Cup plaoffs in Edmonton.  Still gives me chills even as an American.

Bucknuts crying

Bucknuts fans are already crying about this on the Cleveland.com website (Cleveland Plain Dealer).  They can't believe anyone would pass up St. Urban for PSU and believe something nefarious is going on.  Their tears are yummy!

Ehlo call

As I clicked on this topic and started reading, I had a number of calls going through my head. Then I read further to the Ehlo call and my heart just sank.  Agree that this was the shot that made MJ.  Cavs had some very, very good teams over the years, but could never get by the Bulls.  Sigh.  I've heard people tell me the same thing about the silence that mGrowOld mentioned and that it was surreal.

Scrolling further down, "Hello Heisman" picked me back up, though.

Divers

Any idea how the divers are doing?

Cleveland St. Joseph

Both Howard and Grbac went to St. Josephs, n.k.a. Cleveland Villa Angela/St. Joeseph
