5 hours 56 sec ago | Meh, the good records need to |
Meh, the good records need to be taken in the greater context of the state of the conference at that time: UM in a historic a lump, PSU down, and most of the lower tiered programs not being competitive - basically just a 3 way battle between osu, may, and Wisc during those years. Even the signature bowl wins for Dantonio were mostly last minute comebacks against teams that went too conservative at the end of their games (Baylor, Stanford). |

Grew up with WFUM programming; even was on air a few times on the High School Challenge game show (like Quizbusters). Shame that the original station closed down (only heard about it recently). There are still many homes in that part of the state without much access to free, educational television like that was. |

2 days 21 hours ago | FYI, the NCAA has nothing to |
FYI, the NCAA has nothing to do with the CFP (nor its prior incarnation as the BCS). It is a private organization that, in essence, serves as a way for the major bowl games to stay relevant (and highly profitable) as DI-A football transitions (painfully slowly, yet inexorably) to having a full-fledged playoff system. As such, the CFP is an invitational tournament that can proclaim whatever champion they want, by whatever methodology they choose. No one else is compelled to accept it, but many choose to. |

Psyched for the coming years of depressing This Month in MGoBlog posts... Maybe in another 10 years we can read about the program finally coming together just before the dynasty became established. Maybe. |
3 days 1 hour ago | Great for them. It seems |
Great for them. It seems many/most people believe that the CFP is some form of ultimate authority on who is declared a champion. It is simply a 4-team invitational tournament at the end of the regular season that, at least, tries to use some logic in their invite process. However, the inherent nature of their mandate and process implies that it will be imperfect. Is it better than any predecessor method? Absolutely, but that is an incredibly low bar to overcome. |

Very sorry to hear, especially if this was depression related. I was not fully aware of his ties to UM, which makes this all the more saddening. |

Much of it has to do with the degrees most of these players pursue. Yes, many are on campus year round and some are early enrollees (and there are AP classes, etc.), but very few of these people are in highly specialized programs that only offer required courses once per year (sometimes even once every other year). Some programs are nearly impossible to finish in 3 years simply because of how/when the classes are offered (and the prereq requirements too). |
5 days 5 hours ago | How would you feel about high |
How would you feel about high school stadiums selling alcohol? The main issue is about what the school is promoting and their priorities. Unlike OSU, UM is not trying to monetize every single aspect of the experience and essentially become an NFL-lite gameday (though I'm sure Dave Brandon would have have gotten there, given enough time). There is still the tailgate tradition for those that want the more "adult" experience, or just hitting the bars before/after - used to do all of it myself back in the day. |

Maybe it was just easy to overlook EMU? No one expects anything from them... until they go on a tear of a 7 win season, and make a bowl game! (While sparty stayed home for the holidays... God bless those EMUs, for that meme alone) |

1 week 1 day ago | The fallacy in your logic is |
The fallacy in your logic is that the situation needs to be changed. Yes, football can be dangerous, but the guys choose to play because they like it. If they don't want to do something, they don't have to do it - including kickoffs. They can simply fair catch if they don't want to return it. Changing the rules is akin to what was done to boxing decades ago: the rules were changed in the name of safety yet made the sport less appealing to the athletes and the spectators (hence the growth of MMA in the past 30 years). |
1 week 1 day ago | I watched that happen in real |
I watched that happen in real time (and even noted that the pitch outs were dangerously close to the plate when they started). That was one of the sweetest things I've seen in a baseball game because it was so rare. Damn the MLB for changing the rules just for the sake of "saving time". Baseball was meant to be a leisurely spectator sport (only slightly more involving than golf) - this is why it used to be called America's favorite "pastime". |

That's why I said "or even only a football coach". Personally, I think he should carry around a baseball bat at all times, but especially on gamedays. Everyone he talks to someone, they get a small voice inside asking "Is he about to take a swing at me with that?". |

Do you believe Don Brown has only ever been a defensive coach (or even only a football coach)? The man knows football and can recognize good players for both sides of the ball - and has been doing it for decades. |
