Way OT: Super Bowl Ads

Submitted by s1105615 on

Kinda surprised the other user content creators didn't throw one of these up already, and my search ddint turn anything more recent than 2009 up so...here goes.

What was your favorite ad?  Was this year particularly better or worse or have people stopped paying attention?  Mine had to be the Game of Thrones inspired rap battle between Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and God (Morgan Freeman) for Doritos and the Mountan Dew.  I'd be willing to bet Pepsi tried to get Danny Targarion (Emilia Clark), but weren't able to come to terms...thoughts?

I thought the Tide ads won the day. Taking popular and well-known commercials from the past and making them Tide ads was brilliant. Plus Jim Hopper is a freaking pimp

Multiple ads.  Terry Bradshaw starred in one, Gronk the other.

I work in the industry --- the number crunchers will tell you that many (not all) of these ads, despite their steep price, do "pay out" in terms of the incremental sales they drive.

P&G in particular --- they have gone more and more "all in" on the Super Bowl over the years. I wouldn't be suprirsed to see some more Tide ads next February too.

There was an ad for another laundry degergent (at least in my area).   I thought it was going to be a Tide ad, but it ended up as a legit ad for some detergent I never heard of.  Persil.   On top of that they were taking on guacamole disasters and so I was sure it was a Tide ad busting in on the Mexico Avacados ads.

My favorite is probably the one with the Giants.

The funny commercials don't seem to be in abundance anymore. There are too many that are just meh, like ones I'd see on a normal day.

All of them were pretty good, I especially enjoyed Gordon Ramsey and Cardi B in the Amazon commercial. Also Danny McBride as Crocodile Dundee for Australian Tourism needs to be made into a real movie.

One that maybe wasn't a Super Bowl "ad" but promo for the Winter Olympics was this one featuring Shaun White and Black Sabbath which I particularly enjoyed.

Personally, I don't get where the push back against this years ads is coming from. I thought this year was great compared to the last few. Tide's campaign had me in stitches all night. The olympic ads were great, esp White and Vonn. Majority of the commerciasl were enjoyable at the very least. Even the weird Mango Diet Coke ad had my girlfriend and I ammused at the awkwardness of it all.

Any "PC" commercial, any serious commercial missed the mark this year though. Bud Light's campaign was trash.

Outside of Tide there werent any memorable ads to me.  They all just seemed like the same generic ads you'd see watching any football game at any point during the year-nothing special or unique.

That being said the whole "let's show 50 seconds of footage about one thing and then flip it to a product TOTALLY unrelated to the 50 seconds of footage" concept pretty tiring.  Hey look, sick children.  Sick children that need my help.  Sick children, in need of help, right in my hometown.......

Idk, when was the last memorable super bowl ad? The Budweiser 9/11 ad? Maybe the Chrysler ones got Detroit's blood going.. It felt like they toned down on those sick children type of ads, or maybe when those came on I zoned out and went to twitter. The rest of them made me chuckle, which was a big step forward compared to the past couple years.

I like the Ram commercial where they used MLK's words to sell trucks.  Finally, his dream has been realized.

The Dodge Ram commercial full of Vikings heading to Minneapolis, only to realize their team wasn't in it, was pretty clever.

Overall, for me it was:

1. Tide ads. At first, I wasn't that amused, but Old Spice and Mr. Clean cinched it for me.

2. Dodge Ram Vikings commercial, although I would've expected the return trip in their viking ship to be a little less exciting and, you know, not playing the same song by Queen...

3. Crocodile Dundee

6. Most of them were dumb, but the Eli Manning and OBJ dancing one was pretty hilarious. "Just let him dance"

5. Chris Pratt as an extra

6. For the sappy ad award, I have to give it to Budweiser and the water canning. I learned something new in that commercial and thought it was a nice touch.

The Tide ad's were classic and a REALLY funny idea.

Eli-OBJ was by far my favorite.  My Daughter made me rewind and rewatch it four times and I was beyond happy to indulge her.

T-Mobile's commercial was a year late to the party and felt majorly out of place.

Enjoyed the Amazon ad, especially Gordon Ramsay.  Let's be honest, he had a point, too.

Also the one with 85-year-olds attempting to continue their careers.

Tide also had a great concept and executed it spectacularly.  And the shit-don't-stink ad wasn't exactly epic, but it was amusing.

Gotta agree with Tide winning the commercials this year. Our watch party was joking the whole night that every commercial was going to be a tide commercial with how they set it up with the first one. Brilliant marketing by them. Doritos and Mountain Dew also had a great one because who doesn’t want to see Peter Dinklage rap some Busta Rhymes and Morgan Freeman sing some Missy Elliot? Overall they seemed to be just ok again this year though. Budweiser’s was kinda cool and well done but I miss their Clydesdale commercials that were so damn iconic.

I liked the Sprint, Amazon, and Budweiser (water) ads. Also, NBC really had synergy, being able too put all the Olympics promo ads in there for free. That was well planned by someone.

Tide was good, but I didn't love it as much as others. I also liked the Toyota ad with paralympics skier. Doritos/Pop with Dinklage/Freeman was good. Giants/NFL ad was good.

I was not a fan of the Ram ad with MLK.

For me, the New York Giants' doing the finale of "Dirty Dancing" was the one that ruled the night, but the Tide ads were awesome as well, and I also really liked Amazon's ad as well as E-Trade and Febreeze.

I'll also agree with others - I would go see the "Dundee" film if it were actually made. Well done, Tourism Australia.
