Urban Meyer says Michigan finally has a spread offense

“Well, I went back and watched it and I think Gattis did a heckuva job,” Meyer said. “That’s a legitimate spread offense. And he has options.

You can post the same comment fifty more times, but it doesn't change the fact that Meyer is one of the best coaches in college football history.

If cutting corners and "doing anything to win at all costs" guaranteed success by itself, guys like Bobby Petrino and Lane Kiffin and Art Briles would already have an armload of national championships.

I don't like him even a little bit, but there's a case to be made that he's the best: Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. Those first two prove his ability to coach without immense advantages, the last two demonstrated that with huge advantages he has been able to exploit his advantages.

I honestly never knew that. I knew he always said that ND would be his "dream job", but I didn't realize we were part of that contract "out" clause. Man...really makes you wonder what could have been...instead of the rise of OSU under Tressel and then Meyer, it could have been us on the national stage.

In 2004, most any coach at Utah would have had an out to go to nearly any Power 5 team. That's probably how he ended up at Florida, where he really had no established connections. I'm not sure how many Power 5 openings there were going into 2005 season, but Meyer has said that he choose Florida because its roster was way better than Notre Dame's. Had Carr chosen to retire after 2004, yes there's a good chance that Meyer would have looked at the roster and said "hey, I'm going to Michigan". He probably would have had similar options at USC, Texas and a dozen other schools, if they had openings.

Harlan, if that is your dream job don’t you take it regardless of the roster?Unless UF was offering twice the dollars’. Not saying he didn’t I just don’t remember him being offered the job @  ND when he took the Florida job.say what you want about ND, they don’t make exceptions like other programs do for borderline academics. Meyer was all about national championships imo. Hard to do that when you can’t even consider top 100 players with a 2.2 gpa. Much more liberal admissions @ a land-grant school.

I have to wonder if Urban is getting tired of the TV role.  Coaching and being in the thick of CFB competition is in his DNA, and here he is, sitting at home and offering opinions (not that they are ill-founded) to a chucklehead on FOX.  My bet is that he will be coaching somewhere, away from the B1G, in the next couple of years.  Think MSU will be interested in that timeframe?

If Meyer let it be known that he'd be interested in Florida State, the boosters in Tallahassee would be tumescent with joy.

I bet the same thing would be the case in Austin.

While it's not exactly a blueblood, Tennessee is vastly underperforming—it's close enough to the recruiting southern hotbeds to have no real trouble getting recruits, it's got a huge stadium, and it's the major football power in the state.
