Interesting move, I guess
Freep has an article up with more on price, but no details on the other pieces...
I guess the team feels like they have three OF with Hunter, Davis and J.D. Martinez.
Just an insane trade deadline day
plus Dirks coming back soon
Whaaat? Smyly is the one I don't like. I liked Austin a lot and the only reason I liked the trade was because it might allow them to push Smyly back into the bullpen. They don't need more starting pitching. They need a bullpen. And some Bull Durham kinda magic for Verlander.
They need to find another piece for the bullpen for the playoffs now, since Smyly was most likely headed there.
Let it play out, if Verlander continues to struggle he could be the man headed to the pen.
I agree. Move Verlander to the pen. Porcello was not that good coming out of the pen last year in the playoffs.
Verlander usually takes at least an inning to get going. I think for him, the start is mightier than the pen.
I saw what you did there, and I liked it.
I know JV has the better playoff record but Porcello is the better pitcher for the last season and a half. It is a interesting question.
Agree 100% on Jackson - this is the age he should be blossoming. Instead he is stagnating. Smyly looks like he is going to be very good - like a 2nd/3rd in the rotation guy down the road. He has a 4ish ERA in his first year as a regular starter - those type of guys generally put it together in a few years (see Porcello) and he was a leftie. That leaves the bullpen without the lefty guy you take out of the starting rotation and into the bullpen.
Porcello has been maybe the 3rd best pitcher this year, hard to see him go to the bullpen. I cannot imagine JV going to the bullpen ... he has pitched the worse of the bunch and you can't really trust him can you with 1 out and 2 on to get someone out in the 7th in the playoffs?
I was more than ok with giving up the 2 prospects in the last trade, and Jackson wouldnt get you much alone but man Smyly I think is really going to be a good one.
A's made a crazy trade too.
This trade signals one thing to me- we have officially entered WIN FUCKING NOW mode
but I think the A's have a monopoly on that phrase.
WHo plays center field? Tori doesn't have the speed anymore, Davis commits to many errors......
Davis will play it for sure, he already played CF a couple times when AJ got a day off if i remember correctly
Toledo.
He's legit. I'm sure he comes up and takes Jackson's roster spot right now. He's a solid 4th OF and can play center. Also steals bases like a boss.
Seems like a good trade, though I did like both Jackson and Smyly. Radio reports said Jackson was pulled from the game a bit ago.
Have to think part of the reason for this is the A's trade. Both teams are loading up, it's on now!
Really weird watching the game.
They announce that the Tigers aquired Price. Then Ausmus comes on the field and I say, "uh oh, wonder if someone got traded and Brad has to take him out." I was half joking. Then Jackson leaves to a standing ovation and hugs everyone in the dugout. Pretty surreal.
So long, Austin.
I like it, as long as Kansas City doesn't sign Alan Oaks.

I think Price is a year younger than Max so he is not going to be a cheap signing. This protects you for an extra year though as Price is signed thru 2015. So it gives a rotation of Price, Verlander, Sanchez, Porcello and AAA prospect in 2015. So I understand it from that perspective as a replacement for Max, but it's for 1 year. Porcello is going to get paid too soon.
With Max for sure gone now I wonder what kind of $ the Tigers could throw at Price to keep him in Detroit for the forseeable future.
I don't live in Detroit anymore, but I guess i missed the story about Max being gone. Didn't he sign a big contract? Or are people figuring he'd be trade bait now that his money is so big?
Much appreciated!
No they offered him a pretty good contract which he turned down, which is understandable. This is going to be his mega contract. With huge contracts to Verlander and Sanchez, I was surprised they offered Max that sort of money.

as Max does he?
Is Price's contract up at the end of this season, out of curiosity? I believe that he had one year of arbitration left and stood to make $20 million-ish next year potentially. Either way, I do like the trade because it reinforces the starting rotation, but like others, I actually did like Austin and Smyly and what they contributed to this team.
I don't think I've ever seen a player get pulled in mid-game because of a trade though - has that ever happened? I seemed to always believe they were usually simply told later on and allowed to complete the game they were in. I could obviously be wrong in that belief, of course.
It happened to Ubaldo a few years ago, I think he was pulled in like the 2nd inning of a game that he started. It was a surreal and pretty sad sight to see Jackson pulled mid inning like that though, I understand not wanting the person you traded for to not get injured and such but damn that was almost heartwrenching to watch.
This is awesome even though I will miss Jackson despite him never fully coming around offensively. This is still a huge win. Obviously, Ausmus is going to have to get a consistent center fielder, but a rotation of Scherzer, Price, Verlander, Sanchez is really as good as it gets when October rolls around.
Going to be an interesting test of our manager. Say Verlander remains the slumping 4.3 ERA type of pitcher. Is there value putting him in the bullpen? Do you trust Verlander to come in the 7th and gettings 2 outs with 2 men on for example? It's a strange situation for your once ace. Porcello has been at times the 2nd best pitcher on the staff and overall 3rd at worse.
It would be an ego hit to Verlander, but certainly not unprecedented. Tim Lincecum's career is almost a perfect parallel to JV, and the Giants used him out of the BP in the playoffs after he started to regress.
Yes I am not so worried about his ego as his ability to get 2 hitters out when there is no margin for error in a 2-1 playoff game coming out of the bullpen with a man on third.
Whichever starter moves to the pen will be a 6th inning type guy or a guy to come in and eat an inning so that the big three stay fresh.
