Which, I believe, is where Brian exiled the US team.

I believe Bolivia finished 2nd to last in CONMEBOL... Which btw is insanely tough region from which to qualify.

Saw Iceland play in the Euro at the Velodrome. It was cool to see most of a country's population there.

NO
For me, in order, it'll be: 1. Iceland; 2. England; 3. Argentina

I’m pulling for the Vikings from Iceland

Germany. Deutschland vor!

I lived there for a while in the 80s, and love the country. And all the underdogs.
October 11th, 2017 at 9:56 PM ^
Have friends from there

Germany. My peeps.
I am a big EPL fan though and am excited with England’s young talent. Love to see Kane do something next year.
October 12th, 2017 at 5:09 AM ^
The only thing enjoy more than US success is English misery.

Rooting for Germany.

Joining the Reykjavik contingent. My wife and I visited a couple of years ago, had a fantastic time.

That's all you need to watch soccer.
October 12th, 2017 at 12:01 AM ^
I used to watch Serie A in an Italian coffee shop in Chicago and as I recall you also need to be able to pray.
October 12th, 2017 at 12:45 PM ^
..if they make it.

Brazil. I hope they can redeem themselves after the 2014 thrashing.

Brasilero!

My aunt and uncle got me a VHS of the best goals from the 1994 World Cup way back in the day. The Nigerian team had A) awesome kits and B) the best goal celebrations. Ever since then Nigeria has been my #2. Go Super Eagles.
October 11th, 2017 at 10:27 PM ^
I still have this video. Also have the 1994 WC all star team VHS. They are both awesome and a crazy throwback.
October 12th, 2017 at 12:04 AM ^
For some reason Hagi from Romania always stuck with me from that World Cup tape. He had some stunners.
October 12th, 2017 at 12:50 AM ^
Rashid Yakini (sp?) and Emanuel were pretty good on those teams. I'll be pulling for Egypt. Hoping to win a game and maybe pull off a tie against a team ranked ahead of them. Mo Salah is gonna turn some heads.
October 12th, 2017 at 5:08 AM ^
As a Liverpool fan I was ignorant of just how Salah is until this season. He’s a lot of fun. One of those guys that is almost more fun to track without the ball than with.

I hope we see a lot of this celebration:

Arsenal's Alex Iwobi's goal for Nigeria in the 74th minute against Zambia sent the Super Eagles to the 2018 World Cup with a 1-0 win and 13 points after five matches to clinch first place in their group.

Family is from India. India sucks at soccer, but maybe I'll pull for Holland, Germany or France since I've been through their hub airports en route to India. Also was a German minor at UM so there's that. Ultimately rooting for chaos, though. I hope a lot of weird stuff and upsets happen.
October 11th, 2017 at 11:33 PM ^
Holland didn't qualify for the WC.
October 12th, 2017 at 12:06 AM ^
Denmark didn't qualify for the '92 Euros, but Yugoslavia got booted for political reasons when the war broke out and as runner-up in that qualifying group the Danes were put in in their place. And won the championship.

I lived in the Netherlands for a bit early in my career, love the country, big fan of Van Persie, Robben and the gang. Was in my orange rooting for my second favorite team in the 2010 final (even though that Spain team played brilliantly for many years). I mean, two cups ago they were in the final and they did not qualify?!?!
Not nearly as crushing to my soul as the USMNT missing out, though.
So it's the backup to my backup: Poland. Have Polish heritage and I like Lewandowski.
I also tend to pull for Belgium as a another Benelux country I enjoy visiting (with the best beer!).
October 12th, 2017 at 5:19 AM ^
There’s been a massive talent drain since that super generation of Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, Huntelaar, Kuyt, Van Bronckhorst, Van der Sar, etc moved on. They’re asking a lot of Depay early on in his career and are sorely lacking in their young talent pool. Not sure what happened in terms of development but they seem to be a ways off.
October 12th, 2017 at 12:53 PM ^
on the one hand, that incredible wave of talent (which also earned a third place in 2014) from a country of 16 million is pretty remarkable so a regression to the mean isn't shocking.
But probably swung too far the other way in terms of a lack of young talent.
October 12th, 2017 at 9:28 AM ^
... yeah, but still

Hoping for an Iceland-Portugal final, with Ronaldo taking how the cup with a hat trick.
