Five To Go - Basketball Snowflakes
Let's never speak of this again.
We won. Someone shut her up.
Wish I could edit her away. I'll take my negs for it
Charles Matthews had 20 points.
Everyone hates you, Toby.
way that you are?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Jump.
Can we also stop wearing white jerseys? We seem to shit the bed everytime we wear them.
Purdue says 'thanks?'...
Montana was soooo bad
Thank god
yes, thank god. We did play good defense but that was a very poor shooting performance for them.
I was actually very impressed with their defense. They extended pressure (that's how they limit 3s) and rarely were we able to take advantage of their traps because they were so good rotating.
They held us to 61 points on 66 possessions and we didn't even shoot that badly.
They won the shot volume battle thanks to turning us over and limiting our OREBs. They just could not hit a shot.
From that banshee screaming all fucking game.
she only did it during their posessions. I'm surprised someone sitting next to her didn't make her disappear...
If I paid good money for tickets to have that going on next to me.
Eye roll at the "sit on my hands" attitude.
My son was getting pretty annoyed with her or him. Smh
At least he/she/banshee was cheering for the team.
Your son sounds like a soft crap.
Go Blue!
Yeah that was terrible. And seemingly a Michigan fan. Yeesh.
I dunno, maybe we could use 20 more just like her. Keep the opponents fg% in the single digits.
I had to mute it. Sounded like the most annoying sound ever from that scene in Dumb and Dumber.
You mean the one screaming "Mo Wagner" when Teske was shooting free throws?
Maybe it was her screaming that led to Montana's awful shooting performance.
better show up Saturday
WILL show up Saturday. That's a definite yes
That was, umm, not the smoothest. Looked lackluster in the beginning, Wagner didn't really seem engaged and even some good looks just weren't falling. If that's near the worst, and they'll likely get a chewing for it from Beilein, Saturday looks promising.
Hope it works this well...
Play Better
was good. Montana was bad. But last time we had a game like this we rattled off double digit wins until the tournament ended... So.. Maybe not all is lost!
BTW we have the last game on Saturday. 30 minutes after the Kansas game that starts at 7:30
At least they'll have had a couple more days...
...and hopefully the fan base comes flooding in, too
I was sure that fucking 3v14 thread had jinxed it. At least we don't have to kill that guy.
anyway...
That game was almost as bad Steve Lavin was.
About the scrubby white guys headband.....
Amirite? Guys?
Heh heh, hey you headin down ta KOSTKO to git some light bubs??
What about Nessler? I thought he was having a stroke multiple times tonight. Dude must sleep 15 hours a day to handle a game normally. He made at least 20 mistakes in one broadcast.
In his defense, he seemed bored out of his fucking mind. Considering I was dozing off, I can't imagine how bad it was for a casual viewer
Steve Lavin will grasp desperately at any story line he can manufacture.
Michigan gets a turnover on the opening tip. Very rare. All of a sudden it's like Michigan's turnover numbers tripled. Lavin is a putz. He was an average coach at best and he is a less than average commentator.
Steve Lavin is just another example of how self-promotion can get you places in life.
tournament with a bad game
that was poorly officiated
:)
Your wife has sex with you.
He didn't say that!
sex with your wife is THAT boring!
Shut the Fuck up!
SHUT THE FUCK UP, TOBY!!!
Michigan just won a tournament game by 10+ points!
Bang me!!!
Shut the Fuck up!
SHUT THE FUCK UP, TOBY!!!
Michigan just won a tournament game by 10+ points!
Bang me!!!
This was the game many talked about on the blog - the game in which we're pushed out of our offense, but now have the defense to stay in and, clearly, win.
Now let's replicate the run (+2 more) after the last ugly game against Iowa.
I'm pretty sure that was Dante's 11th level of Hell.
More like 14th.
the basketball equivalent of the M00N game?
silver lining is that this will help us prepare against Man Bun, and Houston plays about one third of the defense Montana does.
Hideous game but I'll take it. Matthews turned it over a bunch in forgoing the role player tag but carried us when everyone else was off. Simmons was a liability on D as usual but scored 6 points. Eli Brooks hit a floater! The game started 0-10 and we won without much threat of actually losing. The long break and jittery first round are behind us. You gotta believe Wagner will ball Saturday.
I turned it on when we were down 10-0 and only remember seeing 2 Matthews TOs. Did he have a couple in the beginning.
I thought he was excellent and was surprised to see he had 5 TOs.
It seems whenever he takes more than one dribble, there is a 50/50 shot of a turnover.
He does really well to get low to the ground when attacking the paint, which is great. He always seems to turn the corner and (if the ball doesn't get raked out) he elevates really well. The problem is the lower he gets to the ground, the farther his dribble gets from his body. The ball is really accessible to defenders because Matthews is scared of dribbling off his own foot.
The other big thing with Matthews is he strongly prefers leaping off of two feet. If he were more willing and comfortable elevating off of one foot, he could pick up his dribble sooner, use those great long strides to get across the paint, and still finish strong while doing a better job protecting the ball.
I don't expect him to stop turning the ball over this season, but I look forward to him developing his handle in the future, and learning when it's appropriate to pick up the dribble (high and tight!) and glide for two steps to his spot.
with the song of the Michigan Harpy women drilling in my head. Night all! GO BLUE!!
ugly game. Started out slow in Big 10 tourney too. By the time Michigan plays Saturday, they will be one of less than 30 teams with a chance to go al the way. Bet they are ready to play Saturday.
3 starters were Rec dudes until last year.
Did you watch Wright State
This game burned my retinas and although M had much to contribute, Montana shot like they were junior high C teamers while M ran fast breaks like B teamers.
Yeah, but they were swarming the ball. That felt like the most aggressive d I've seen us play against.
I thought they were the best 14th seed by a wide margin...
Maybe Arizona is worse (hey-o!)
Actually they were the best 14 seed by a fair margin on Kenpom
Montana blows.
Michigan press conference is on CBS sports network now.
Win ugly is still a win.. Go blue!
Thanks Delaney for the 2 week layoff.
Our neighbors to the NW have an extra 2 days for their layoff. I hope it is equally rust-inducing.
Spotted them 10 and won by 14.
No muppets for that one :(
Hopefully the bourbon and scotch will help me forget how we got the W. I’m passing out now.
Team to do on an 11 o’clock start and a twenty minute clock delay?
No excuse they played in Hawaii earlier this season.
Well, that game got me to stop thinking about UNC.
This game was the predictable byproduct of a commissioner who values playing at MSG over how his conferences team does in the tournament. Nothing more....Nothing less.
What an absolutely pathetic performance.
Reminded me of the Maryland and Minnesota games.
No urgency. I can't fathom what Wagner was thinking.
Rahmann? Wow...
Thank god Charles Matthews decided to show up.
Just awful.
Wow, are you depressing. Holding a tournament team to 19 points in a half and 32% shooting and winning by 14 after being down 10 within the first 5 minutes?
May as well go back to the NIT. Would that satisfy you?
Boo.
Go away.
I celebrate all tournament wins.
I denigrate your name (is that proper English, Go Blue!?).
you're an absolutely pathetic person
But just wait please, it'll be fine on Saturday.
When do they decide game times? I need to plan my Saturday!
9:40 PM ET...at the earliest.
on saturday
beat man bun!
...it’s a dork knob.
Advance,
Forget.
Go Blue.
Aesthetically unpleasing dub but I'll take any win in the tourney, particularly one without a stressful ending.
Holding an opponent to 47 is pretty cool, too.
spread. i.e. we were better than expected. Yeah, the offense was worse than expected (Montana had something to do with that) but the defense was outstanding.
Their defense was so active--it really seemed to throw off our offense off. But I wonder if it also led to Montana being fatigued I n the second half. Their shooting took a nose-dive.
I imagine the team will be moving great without the ball on Saturday, back cuts for layups and dunks, etc. Despite the seed, I prefer them to SDSU. I worried about the Aztecs athleticism.
Beat man bun indeed.
And UM by 8. It was a meat grinder with UM by 14. No complaints here.
We got next!
Somebody gets it.
Jesus. Is this why everyone hates Michigan fans?
Z will be so well rested to run with Bunsy McMann on Saturday.
Amen.
It's over, moving on, nothing to see here. On to Houston and manbun.
Easily one of, if not the, ugliest game of the season. Glad we got Montana and not Buffalo.
go blue beat houston!
Maybe so... I'd argue that Buffalo is glad they got Zona and not Michigan!
I don't know, as frustrating as the offense was, I felt good by how the defense covered it. Obviously we can't do it to this extent against Houston (and certainly not against UNC), but it shows that they can execute on the defensive end in spite of frustrations on the other half of the ball.
Also, given that this is a banner year (and we've avoided being a historic upset), I feel like a big weight is gone for the "legacy" of this team: No matter what, they're champions.
The impact was evident.
Stunned early by quick fouls on Z.
Defense was stellar.
Bench pulled us through - 20 points.
Houston minus #32 shot under 30%.
Except for the first 5 minutes, and Wagner's butterfingers costing us what felt like 5 TOs, I thought they played pretty well. Good to see Matthews come out of his funk.
Teske is too good to keep on the bench. Wish they would play him and Wagner together, but it's probably too late in the year to experiment with that.
Message board would be a lot of fun right now......

@slmandel
So let me get this straight.
-- The Pac-12 got three teams in the NCAA tournament.
-- Two didn't make it out of Dayton.
-- Their champ is about to lose by 25 to Buffalo.
They are basically a mid-major now. Weird.
Why the FUCK are we the last game again on Saturday.
Michigan's worst game of the B1G tournament was the first one against Iowa, and the competition wasn't close.
So, shaking off rust, two quick fouls against Simpson (plus MAAR getting one in the first minute and hitting the bench). All kinds of discombobulation.
And they won by 14 and were 10+ clear for most of the second half.
This team doesn't have superstars, but it can win games in so many ways. Offense struggling in the second half? Hold the other team without a field goal for 10 minutes.
So many good tools in the toolbox.
win is a win. I liked how active their defense was. it looked like Don Brown on the hardwood, blitzing double teams from all over. really impressed with their little dudes dunk. that was impressive.
Mo and co. will be ready Saturday
The win wasn’t pretty enough!
Bad game. Matthews stepped up tho and that's all we needed tonight. Foul trouble is gonna be big on Saturday. We need Z on Gray as much as possible. Hit a good chunk of our threes, don't turn it over = hello LA
Skip Bayless
@RealSkipBayless
I'm picking Arizona to win it all as a 4 seed because of Deandre Ayton, who at 7-1 has NBA superstar potential. Plays so hard and smart for his age. Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon, but he's easily the best player in this tournament.
Made a fool of himself in front of all 14 of his viewers.
skip bayless has been making a fool of himself for a long time.
And I thought Barkley picking San Diego St in the Elite 8 was bad!
That Montana pg was quick
is in the Michigan band. Can anyone with connections to the band inform her that she is universally hated by all michigan fans? and beg her to stfu on Saturday...
For an entire game. I legit have a headache. It’s either because of her or the tv guys.....
Get a headband for that headache.
Maybe we can all chip in and buy her a muzzle
Someone said this on the game thread as well. Trombone player apparently. Please someone ask her not to do that again. This game was already an assault on my eyes-- didn't need the ears to be bleeding as well.
We've been giving all the credit to Yaklich. Maybe it's because of this Trombone lady.
BTW, that was a seriously maize shirt that Yaklich was wearing.
That game is why good defense is important.
Long layoff + lomg road trip + late start + time zone change + scrappy underdog = offensive struggles. But the defense doesn't go away.
Robinson once again solid on the post defense. His guy was getting pretty frustrated.
Very impressed with Robinson's improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Seems like he's taking it pretty serious.
Houston is a better match up. Bring it on
#PickByPick #FortheTeam
Maybe a good thing to get an offensive clunker out of the way early.
We're still in the tournament - on to the next round!
Go Blue!!
In years past, that game would be a lot more scary since the defense would not have been around to support the offense (sounds like football). Yet if the defense can continually be that savvy and aware, switching and contesting, the team is much better suited to survive those clunkers.
Montana should have called for 75 fouls per half. That team is full of dickbags.
This! Made those two early fouls on Simpson look even more ridiculous.
I said almost that exact same thing last night
It's a good thing Vasili didn't get to see Montana.
These fucking morons call MAAR and Simpson for touch fouls in the first minute and then proceed to let Montana play football for the next 10 minutes before realizing that oh, shit, we're calling a basketball game! And I bet Montana thought they were playing good defense the entire time they were mugging the shit out of Michigan. Those officials should be sent to call a nearby junior high game tomorrow. Idiots.
I kept yelling at the officials. It was quiet enough in that place I'm pretty sure they could hear me. I kept it clean and simply pointed out that they couldn't get a call correct to save their lives. My favorite was resetting the shot clock on the held ball without a change of possession (in the first half, when Houston had the ball). The ball didn't hit the rim, Michigan never gained possession, the shot clock was at 6 when they went to timeout -- and it was at 30 when they came back. I shouted -- another guy in my section shouted -- it didn't do a thing. And, naturally, Houston scored with 23 on the shot clock.
I didn't hear the wailing girl. She must have been next to the TV effects microphone. What I did hear was a "Go Blue!" "Go Maize!" cheer that I don't remember ever hearing before and I didn't like a bit. It sounded like a bad East Lansing import.
Finally -- Michigan is now the 3rd most efficient defense, per KenPom. Virginia, Cincinnati, Michigan. (Admittedly, Michigan is a full 5 points per 100 possessions behind Cincinnati. But still. 3rd. In defense.)
These dipshits should be sent home for the remainder of the Tournament. What an embarrassment.

Everyone bet large on the Michigan including two IU grads/fans who spent most of the game trying to bad mouth Michigan’s offense. I explained the ER have won ugly routinely and reminded them just how bad Archie Miller’s first season was. Beilein and the boys pulled it out with the comfortable win and cost. It put 3 of us up for the day and we were chanting ‘Ugly Spread’ repeatedly. It was a beautiful thing.
I learned that Wilt had a half headband, with a elastic strap.... And we won. It wasn't a wasted night.
Ugly, ugly game for a variety of reasons. Reminiscent of Iowa in B1G Tourney. Hopefully they will rebound in the same way they did then.
Man bun will find he is out of style!
One to go. There is only one next game.
Let's get to the Sweet 16. This team plays better as the underdog. Plus mid majors and small programs aren't intimidated by this Michigan team. We don't have the major recruiting stars or multiple freakish athletes that can jump out of the gym.
