Coach Drevno on the Sideline

Submitted by anniemoose98 on
I thought that I saw Coach Drevno back on the sideline versus up in the box today. Can anyone confirm? If he is, that's incredibly interesting to see. It seemed as if all facets of the offensive looked more together (especially play calling and lack of penalties) with him back next to Harbaugh on the sideline.

My guess is they had to change the logistics of play calling for Peters. I noticed Peters was coming to the sideline and getting the call verbally from Harbaugh and then jogging back to the huddle. That takes an extra 5-10 seconds that they probably had to trim off of their normal by-comittee approach.

Best guess is Harbaugh was making sure Peters was comfortable with every playcall and coaching him up a little extra.

Still could have been the committee approach (the man wears a headset and Peters was on the horn with Pep between series); would be a good question for the presser if a reporter can find a way to ask it differently/better than the previous Qs about playcalling.

Peters and Evans had some uncomfortable moments with handoffs ... but I think Peters is ahead of both JOK and Speight in pass routes.  The throw to Nico was perfect and was delivered faster than either other QB.  His "on the run routes" were very good with the one exception ... which I don't think he'll ever miss again (I think he thought the receiver was coming back to the ball).

With being named the starter - he'll work with all the "1's"  ... but don't be surprised if Collins sees a lot more playing time (IMO he's well ahead of McDoom as a receiver).

you are guaranteeing something despite all coaches saying otherwise? I'm mean maybe you're right but why on Earth should we believe you? do you have some kind of insight here? What a weird thing to say.

ok, well no one believes you since you aren't even trying to defend yourself with anything other than "trust me". sorry random internet guy, I'll believe what coaches and every other person has said over you.

has taken personal responsibility for the play calling. Yes the coaches contribute to that process, but in the end, Harbaugh says that he decides what play is called. For every play. He's explained this in multiple pressers in the previous two seasons and at least three pressers this season.

Many of you may find Inman annoying, but in this case he's correct. Based on Harbaugh's own words he is the final decision on what play is called.

i know this is getting beat to death and probably unproductive but can you provide any quote to prove Harbaugh calls plays? I've found several including former Stanford staff saying everyone is involved and that he has final say... including on defense. Fisch gave a detailed interview, here's a quote: "Instead of designating one person to serve as the team's chief offensive play caller, or limit the discussion to himself and one other coach, Harbaugh keeps an open dialogue going with his entire offensive staff from snap-to-snap on the sidelines during game days.". If you're saying because he has final say he's the play caller, then fine, but that's not the normal definition. If that's your definition, do you also say he calls defensive plays?

His comments responsing to questions in the pressers have always (IIRC) been about offensive plays. It's not my definition rather it's Harbaugh's response to questions about who decides what play is called. His answer, uniformly, has been he does.

ok, maybe, but if you watch him during drives he doesn't say much. I'm sure he says things like run it more or exploit that matchup but I see no evidence that he is calling every play. Here's a quote from a couple weeks ago: "We call the plays together as a staff," Harbaugh said Monday in Ann Arbor. "I have the final say on the play calling."

do you think drevno on the sidelines was a bigger factor than Peters taking over or the fact that we were playing Rutgers at home? We were better but drevno being on the sidelines is not high on my list of reasons. even if that's your thesis, why do you think that made them better? I'm not trying to be a dick but you aren't saying anything. I'm assuming there is a reason you believe this but you seem unwilling to say.

I should be fair and say that I'm still on my phone, so no proper analysis until I get back to the dorm (and my PC).

My hypothesis is that he had a larger part in play calling by being on the sideline, but that's just a guess. I'll talk to the people I know involved with the team and see why he moved back down to the sideline.

That's fair. Like I said above, this was my quick take on the issue. I'm looking forward to looking at the film and seeing what I couldn't see from my POV at the game as well as UFR for this week. Should be interesting.

Either way, I think that sticking with both changes (sideline Drevno and Peters in as QB) are the way forward for this team.
