Chad Henne re-signs with Jaguars
Henne re-signs with Jaguars for a two-year deal worth $8M inclusive of incentives. Good for him.
Henne gets high praise from Bortles:
"He has become a really good friend, he’s really been good for me on the field and off the field," said Bortles in his season-ending press conference. "I’ve learned a ton from him as both a football player and as a man. I’ve cherished the relationship that we’ve had and the things we’ve done. That’s obviously up to Gus and Dave and everybody, but I’d love to have him back for sure.”
OC Greg Olsen on Chad's value to Bortles' development:
I do know that Chad has been a very good, strong in his development not only last year, as a rookie, but going into this year, I think Chad provides not only a great sounding board but he’s a very calming influence on the sideline. Now, he’s been a tremendous help for Blake at this point in his development.”
Henne on his relationship with Bortles:
“I just really think we study well together," said Henne. "We’re always together, whether we’re in the film room or on the field doing foot work. Just bits and pieces. Anything he wants to ask me – defenses, different coverages, reads – we’re a culminating factor together. It’s just a great relationship and that’s why I wanted to be back here.”

Yup, completely agree. That is the name.
Imagine if Denard had Henne's arm he would be a superstar, in the pros. Kind of Like he was in college.

Already knows the system, pretty steady for a back up, can help out a young QB that is still progressing (and clearly helped him last year). Smart move for a team that doesn't look like it has an immediate need to bring in a project QB at the moment.
Still think his time with the Dolphins ultimately ruined a promising career for Henne. He always had a huge arm with inconsistent accuracy, but his biggest problem in Miami is that he was afraid to unleash his arm. Turned into a check down QB and not much more. It neutered his best assets as a QB and magnified his weakest aspect.

Chad Henne contract is $8mil/2 years. Blake Bortles current contract (his rookie one) is $20mil/4 years.
Henne: 4 million per year
Bortles: 5 million per year.
So Henne (the backup) only makes 1 million dolars per year less than Bortles (the starter)

Well, we don't know what portion of the $8M the incentives represent (or what they are). For all we know, $6M of the $8M contract are incentives for X number of games started or Y number of game appearances. But I think it just speaks to Henne's ability and the Jags' confidence in him given some other teams starting QB situations.

But mostly, it's just because it's Bortles rookie contract. If Bortles continues to progress, his next contract will be significantly higher. My guess is resigning Bortles will cost $16m/year or more, which would make him the 18th highest per year in the NFL. Yes, NFL QBs make good money.

Backup QB is an incredible career path.

Lots of money, lots less concussions. :)

Todd Collins agrees.

Yup. Plus you don't even have to risk that many injuries because you're a backup and you get paid millions of dollars a year.
February 18th, 2016 at 2:58 PM ^
High pressure? Sure, but 2-3 innings a week? Awesome.

My athletic goal was to be a Major League backup catcher.
Play 30-40 games a year. Don't have to be an especially good hitter. Low expectations, high chance of being a fan-favorite. Front row seat to the game. Still get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more.

I never thought about the backup catcher role, but that's a good one. Pitcher still might be better since you don't ruin your knees or back (just one arm).
"Who's your favorite player, Junior?"
"Gerald Laird, Dad!"

If that team can get a defense together, they will be dangerous. Hope Denard stays healthy and can put a full season together.

They have potential

where is the picture of him with the sweet mustache?? This many comments without it?? Someone must be actually working at work, or driving home.

Coach Brown approves...

And another for good measure

Heck 4 million a year to stand on the sidelines and not take a beating. Pretty good job if you can get it.
February 18th, 2016 at 5:22 PM ^
And he'll have mileage. He can do that gig for another 10 years.
February 18th, 2016 at 6:19 PM ^
Good move. Henne is one of the best backup QBs
