OT - Iowa is still really mad about the Stanford Band
It appears as though Iowa has decided to take their butt hurt over the, relatively tame by Stanford band standards, Rose Bowl half time show to legislative levels.
"Senator Mark Chelgren introduced a bill Wednesday that would prohibit “collaboration and cooperation” between Stanford and the University of Iowa, Iowa State, or Northern Iowa until Stanford apologizes for the band’s skit"

You know how Maryland is crabcakes and football? Well, Iowa is corn and, once every four years, a misguided belief that what they believe matters. We are in that period now, so they feel all powerful and political...

It's winter, so no planting nor harvesting...

People introduce all kinds of inane bills during legislative sessions. In a typical two-year session of Congress there will be between 5,000 and 10,000 introduced. Most are quickly ignored.

Iowa this week is like the international bobsledding federation the week after the Olympics: wholly irrelevant for the next four years.

Shouldn't that Senator be more concerned about how Ferentz and Co. got their stuff packed in on national television?
February 4th, 2016 at 8:52 AM ^
I think it's pretty clear that if Iowa had won the game, they wouldn't have felt the need to propose this bill.

Hmm- so you're saying we are basically just like the OSU fans we love so much?
February 4th, 2016 at 8:49 AM ^
We have nothing in common with those sister fuckers in Ohio.
/love the Stanford band btw

On a daily basis, I have never had much interaction between OSU or MSU alums. The group of alums that I think Michigan alums are the most similar to are ND alums.
I think that there are more career fields mutually populated by ND and M alums than there are between M/MSU or M/OSU alums. And if you live in the Chicago area, this place is filled with ND alums. The great thing about my interactions ND alums is that they are far more reasonable than either MSU or OSU alums.

It looks like Stanford will forever be locked out of the state of Iowas ground breaking research into animal "husbandry".
February 4th, 2016 at 8:59 AM ^
OMG, you are right. So Stanford will be forced to work with staee in that field, and therefore they need to talk even s-l-o-w-e-r.

It's no surprise then that Notre Dame has banned the Stanford band for making fun of Catholics.
To Hell with ND

The tree mascot is a bit of a lech. Your shiny tree really oughtn't be leching its way around America. Especially with kids in the audience. I've seen it miming sodomizing cheerleaders and mascots, and unlike South Park (an analogy raised above) (i) the tree's antics are lewd without being clever, and (ii) people aren't tuning into the School ___ v. Stanford game to see this stuff.
Now introducing legistlation or executive orders about such silliness? That's a bit much. There are plenty of inappropriate displays at any major football game, so if you're predisposed to being offended you can always do that.
But that tree is a bit of a jerk.
February 4th, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
The Tree is unique and the process of becoming the Tree is outstanding.
Almost every person in a costume mascot is terrible -- I thought Sparty was bad until I saw his cousin from Rutgers.
Unless the mascot is an animal that if it got free posed a real threat to personal safety (Bevo, Ralphie, Mike the Tiger) or is an anti-mascot, nightmare fuel creature (the Tree), they can all be done away with.

Somewhat applicable here, I think:

you can never underestimate the stupidity of some people
February 4th, 2016 at 8:43 AM ^
because there are exactly zero Iowa fans out here (in Des Moines) who care about it. They all laughed about it.
Find something better to do with your legislative time.

I imagine every member of the Stanford band is having this shit framed and hung on the wall with pride. Doesn't Senator Chelgren realize he's giving them more than they could have hoped for?
February 4th, 2016 at 8:45 AM ^
Unreal, what a dumb bill. People got way over-heated about this and frankly, over a month after it happened need to just let it be in the past.

While no right-thinking person would argue that this isn't petty and silly, I would like to point something out. One of Iowa's biggest legislative issues for the last few years is that we are breaking our own laws by having TOO MUCH money on hand.
We are only permitted to have a certain amount of surplus money on hand, with the rest to be spent on reinvesting into the state somehow, through roads, education, social services, whatever.
I would contrast that with the sorts of things my home state of Michigan is in the news for, and respectfully advise to look to your own glass houses first, before you criticize this particular state.
February 4th, 2016 at 8:54 AM ^
Let me summarize your argument.
- Iowa has had a budget surplus in recent years.
- Michigan has troubled cities in Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, and others. And there are some budgetary deficits in Michigan.
- Therefore, people in Michigan can't criticize Iowa's idiotic "no fraternization with Stanford" bill?
I'm unsold on this argument.
February 4th, 2016 at 8:58 AM ^
The point being made is, Iowa's legislature is doing a great job running the state, and before people in Michigan, whose legislature is doing a positively terrible job criticize Iowa, they should probably check themselves.
Its a bit like a broke man criticizing a hard-working man's purchase of an expensive car.
February 4th, 2016 at 9:03 AM ^
Except by your own description Iowa sounds more like the crazy person who stashes all of their money in their mattress.
February 4th, 2016 at 9:05 AM ^
As opposed to the guy who takes out loans, spends the money on things other than what he said he needed it for, and never pays it back? Yeah, well....
February 4th, 2016 at 9:08 AM ^
lives off of corn subsidies. Remove the ethanol requirements from gasoline and/or eliminate corn subsidies in general and Iowa will look like a third world shithole within a decade.
February 4th, 2016 at 9:09 AM ^
And so would most of the rest of the country look like a third-world shithole. Do you realize how cheap food is in the US?
February 4th, 2016 at 9:22 AM ^
It's cheap, and it also sucks. The food in other countries is way more flavorful than the geneticially manipulated crap we're fed here. We could all stand to eat a bit less HFCS and other corn based products.
I'll gladly pay a little more if food starts tasting like food again.
