NO. BAD BUSINESS SOPHOMORE. GO AWAY
“The Victors” could soon have a modernistic younger sibling.
If a resolution presented to the Central Student Government on Tuesday night passes, the body will provide funding to a group of students looking to develop an additional thematic song to play at University athletics events.
Central Student Government.
I don't know who you are. If you're looking for jobs I can tell you I don't have any. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired from the internet. Skills that make me a nightmare for people who will be in job interviews with people who have googled you. If you vote this down unanimously, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for your facebook photos. I will not scour your instagram. But if you vote for this, I will find your linkedin. I will find your whole internet. And I will kill your search results.

The patient zeroes:
Business sophomore Adam Weiss, a representative on the CSG Assembly, spoke on behalf of the song campaign, which he called “Hail and Unite.” He said his friend, LSA senior Mike Weinberg, conceptualized the project.
“This project is meant to be, number one, extremely unique,” Weiss said. “The goal of this song is to get a lot of big names that are associated with the University.”
"Extremely unique." #expelAdamWeiss

No need to worry.
Either people will like the new song or we'll never hear it again, After all, this is how we got "Varsity", so it's possible it may be good. Presumably it will be something the Glee Club can sing, not like "in the Big House". If it's not good, it won't be around long enough to make a difference.

If they want to play another song, how about "Varsity"? It's a great song and rarely makes an appearance outside of the football pregame show.
Writing an entirely new song sounds like a very, very bad idea.
February 11th, 2015 at 12:03 PM ^
Because the greatest fight song isn't enough? I nominate "Sweet Caroline" as the alternate fight song, with "Don't stop Believin'" #3, held in reserve for non-conference night games played on Tuesdays in South Detroit.
February 11th, 2015 at 12:03 PM ^
I think this is a great idea. The Victors was probably trashed by all the old fogies 200 years ago when it was written. In fact I think they should change the fight song AND the alma mater every four years so every graduating class gets their own unique tunes. Therefore we will all be special snowflakes.

Gloating about publicly humiliating MIchigan undergrads? Threatening MIchigan undergrads who have different ideas than you with sabotaging their career opportunities? This is not only abusive, it's a classic display of hubris.

People that will "do anything" are always a negative. Always.
February 11th, 2015 at 12:52 PM ^
Now if you'd like to debate whether what Brian did to stop this idea is negative or positive that's different but saying "always negative" is a big generalization
February 11th, 2015 at 1:04 PM ^
It encompasses stuff like the Auburn tree-poisoning, or the lunatic that stabbed Monica Seles, or the people that covered up for Jerry Sandusky. People who would literally "do anything" would be willing to do all that and more.

So am I the only one who didn't take this literally?

This response seems odd to me. I mean, feel free to kill the message but shooting the messenger - a college sophomore - all the while standing on our high horses about how to treat recruits on Twitter, etc., seems a little hypocritical and unseemly to me. Is anyone actually concerned that some song that is created by artists that will definitely sound old, lame and passe in 15 years is going to supplant The Victors or even be remembered 20 years from now? Yeesh.
February 11th, 2015 at 12:14 PM ^
This kid isn't a UM athlete and we have nothing to gain from him from our irrational fandom so I guess he's fair game whereas all the terrible self-produced rap songs from recruits and UM athletes alike are off limits I guess since that might cause us to lose football and basketball matches....
February 11th, 2015 at 12:07 PM ^
This cannot happen. It will not catch on even if he gets the funding it will not happen. Ask anyone who has been in the Basketball bands over the last 5-6 years. This will turn into another Let's Go, Michigan and whatever the hell else we played. I don't even remember the names. The most that will happen is it will get pumped into the stadium like the Nickleback-ian POS thing for a slow but inevitable death.
Just don't let him waste the University's money on something this ridiculous. The kid probably just wants to get his name out there, which he has. Too bad he doesn't realize he's going to fund the next aweful party-centric song that people who've lost a few too many brain cells love. Like this.

I don't think I've ever seen the ending to that video. Everytime I watch it, I get about a minute in, audibly sigh, "Ugh", and close the tab.

a rather prolific Interwebz stalker. Generally, I use my powers for good, but would be willing to make an exception for your project, Brian.
This poor child needs to learn that if one doesn't want to be annihilated on the webz, one shouldn't do things that invite annihilation. That includes posting pics of you looking like a Biebs wannabe, and speaking on behalf of piss-poor execution of ideas. The idea itself is not that bad. The execution plan, however, is amateur and, dare I say it, Walmart Wolverine-ish.
Hopefully he considers this his twofold learning opportunity. First, develop thick skin for the real world (especially the business world), and second, think very carefully about projects you hitch your little red wagon to.

Talk about a "hot take," man. It's a terrible fucking idea, but so is roasting a kid on your blog who had the gall to come up with a bad idea. This blog should be above ad hominem personal attacks on students.

It's trying to implement it through student government and thereby force it down our throats.

Insecure people like attention. That's all this is. "Here's what I'm doing. Look at me. Look at me. Look at me."
When I was in school the student section filled first. We watched the "old people" slowly fill the stands. No students changed anything back then. I'm not seeing the current bunch change anything.
February 11th, 2015 at 12:27 PM ^
Just because he had an idea to try and contribute to his school, he's an insecure, attention hungry brat? How did you draw that conclusion?

Oh Brian oh Brian. How I love when you post humor such as this. It is the scum of the earth like you that motivates so many of us to succeed in life. So, let me ask you a few questions you ignorant, disgusting loser.
1. Do you enjoy sitting all day in your mom's basement jerking off to your sister?
2. Do you not show yourself in public because you're a fat piece of shit who eats all day and trolls the internet.
Why do I even dare go any further. This kid will clearly get a job because he is a genuine character who people do not care what they find about him on the internet. You on the otherhand, well maybe you deserve to be ISIS' next target. Maybe one day we will see you on the internet, getting your testicles cut off and shoved in your fucking mouth. It is this day that I will laugh, laugh so fucking hard, because no one will know who you are.
So my recommendation for you. Get off your fucking ass. Meet me in the Diag Friday the 13th at 3 pm. Let's see what you really look like. And let's fucking settle this like men.
