WTKA Roundtable 8/2/2018: Why Are Our Rivals So Terrible?
[Bryan Fuller]
We’re back!
Things discussed:
- Meyer: The guy in charge now isn’t the guy in charge before, but the guys in charge before were just guys in charge.
- Perspective: the MSU thing is way worse, but not being Engler is a possible motivation to overreact.
- How is it the biggest story out of media day is Jim Harbaugh? Only one guy in the national media is digging into Aaron Hernandez, all the arrests at Florida.
- Craig tells the story how Lloyd suspended a star player for a big game on the whiff of a serious charge.
- Impression of new OSU president is he’s a serious dude.
- Legal issue: Unless there’s a mandatory reporting there’s no legal issue. It’s completely an ethical issue.
- Everybody knew. Everybody on the Ohio State beat knew.
- What one ESPN guy is covering and nobody else seems to be: We’ve seen this pattern at Florida, where Urban “counsels” a violent person who’s useful to him and that’s the end of it until something else happens again.
- Bringing back Reschke: The usual at MSU. The whole idea of letting players vote is a gross dereliction of responsibility. Jermaine Carter tweeted out that he wasn’t surprised because their entire offensive line talked the same way. Negative recruit away: If you wanna play with racists go to State!

What, are they gonna bang the rocks the wrong way?
Hey now. Rutgers is doing the best they can. It's not easy being our rival.

You could change that title to why is the culture around big time college athletics so toxic and shitty?
August 3rd, 2018 at 10:24 AM ^
Because you get paid to win! Period. Not graduate players, not development men, not be a "good, ethical, moral" etc. guy. You get paid to win football games.
Randy Shannon was charged with cleaning up the Miami football program after the Davis and Coker era. By all accounts he did a fantastic job with that. He was fired because, at the end of the day, nobody gives a fuck about that.

At Miami they don't.
But I will say, I always appreciated how Tommy Amaker cleaned up M's hoops program and I'm still a fan of the guy even though he never got us to the NCAAs. It's tough, but at some point you do have to say, "thanks, but we'd like to win now."
I don't know enough about the Randy Shannon situation to say whether he got a fair chance to prove himself at the U, but his Wikipedia page shows he went 9-4 and 7-5 his last two seasons there and only got 4 years overall. Granted, it's probably easier to win in football at Miami than hoops at Michigan but that still seems like a pretty quick hook. Amaker got six years.
"At Miami they don't."
They don't at Michigan either! Tommy Amaker is consistently denigrated on this board. Why? Because he didn't win enough basketball games.
"thanks, but we'd like to win now."
Thanks for proving my point. Coaches know this and they know if they don't win they will not be coaches anymore. Division I athletics is a cesspool because of this. It's similar to any ultra-competitive business in which it is easy to keep score--Wall Street, for example, certainly comes to mind.
I believe Jim Harbaugh is at least going to try to win and do it the right way. I know that John Beilein has already proven that he can do it. And by "winning" I do not mean they have to win everything every year. Even the sleaziest crooks can't do that.
I’ve been visiting fairly frequently for the past few years and I’ve never seen Amaker denigrated. Just sayin.

As a coach he certainly has. I don't believe he has as a person.

Aw man, missed Bad Dudes reference.

*clap clap*
Am I the only one that read this to the beat of "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands?

Go Green! White Power!

I shouldn't laugh at this but I did.
I sure wish upvoting worked for me. I hope you'll take this virtual +1 in consolation.

Not anymore

Reschke is a 6th year senior who was kicked off the team for racist stuff? How does MSU keep getting these 6 year guys? Didn't know taking a year off for being racist was worth getting a 6th year.
August 3rd, 2018 at 12:01 PM ^
Well for starters, they haven't humiliated the NCAA with examples of common sense.

So the latest is that "Zachs Smith wife is a drunk too, and she called 911 like 65 times in 90 days on Zach and bitches be crazy and the Police wont even go to her house anymore because she cried wolf all the time and the pictures were't even recent and really, why is this Urbans fault"?
It's like these people are reading some kind of handbook

those "stories" have already been de-bunked

What's the best way to listen on Android? I was using Stitcher, but the MGoBlog podcast hasn't been updated there since May 31st.
August 3rd, 2018 at 11:09 AM ^
What's Stitcher?
I use podcast republic. It's okay.
August 3rd, 2018 at 11:17 AM ^
It's an app that plays podcasts and some other media, but I mainly use them for Podcasts. I've been using them due to their excellent integration with Android Auto and Ford AppLink. Both good ways to get a good native safe experience while driving.
August 3rd, 2018 at 11:51 AM ^
I use Podcast Go. It's the first app I've found that actually updates all podcasts within an hour or so of when they are released.
August 3rd, 2018 at 11:59 AM ^
On Android, I use google podcasts. They recently made it an app, but it used to be an add on that you could "Add to Home Screen". I've been using it in that capacity for like 6 months, and haven't had an issue. Just downloaded the app today.

The usual favorite any time podcast apps get mentioned on Android forums is Pocket Casts. I use it, and it's feature filled while looking great.
You can add MGoBlog via the general podcast feed link.
I like the WTKA podcasts at this time of year, but come someone please tell me why, when a segment is over, it automatically begins playing the previous segment? Why can't I just start on 1 and continue through the segments?
Click direct download, your browser media player is probably fine (I'm using Chrome and it works well)

So the actual Ohio State fans I know personally (including my hard-core Dad*) are all in the "Zero Tolerance means Zero Tolerance," save for my Step-Mom's Dad, who basically just said, "Damnit."
Ohio State hasn't played this perfectly, but they have done 3,000 times better so far than Penn State or MSU. If they actually fire him (and most Ohio State fans think they will, fwiw), I think they deserve a B-.
Maybe I just know 83% of all reasonable Ohio State fans, but they all think he's gone. They really think highly of their President, and just don't think he's going to let this slide. I think there's a chance he's merely suspended for a year, but I'd put it at like 50/50 at this point.
*I was adopted.
August 3rd, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
I hope you just claim to be adopted because your parents are OSU fans. I would if I was in that boat...
When is that new big story supposed to come out on MSU? How Dantonio and Izzo still have jobs is beyond me. What they have covered up and lied about is way worse than what has come out so far on Meyer. Now maybe there is more to the story on Meyer, but what has been released to the public so far....he looks like a saint compared to those two. Any update UMBig11?
What have they covered up?
Brian, I assume you're referring to Seveneves as the good book about the moon exploding?
yep!
