By Rights We Should Have To Play There
never heard of it
The University of Michigan football program will open the 2014 season with a match-up against Appalachian State University on Aug. 30 at Michigan Stadium. This will be the second [sic] meeting between the Wolverines and Mountaineers at Michigan Stadium.
Sorry about that error in the second sentence above. Michigan has never played Appalachian State.
If you'll excuse me, I feel like having a seizure.

Excellent. I welcome this. We fear no ghosts.

We could suffer ill-timed coaching attrition and consequent disruption. Possibly due to health, vehicle accident and/or witchcraft. A second [sic; sick] loss to ASU and I will brew up a batch of special Kool-Aid, drink thirstily and then lay down for relief. No Dave no. /lot already cast

I wished it would be played there. Boone in September is awesome. Also Armanti Edawards in now an NFL return man.
August 25th, 2011 at 6:39 PM ^
...we all seem to making the assumption that we will be good enough to beat them in 2014, let alone by 50. I'm sure (hope) we will, but we haven't even seen how well our current coach can handle a big time program like Michigan. If you wanted to play ASU, wait a few years to schedule them, ensure out program is heading the right direction...and do it at their place. They deserve it.

....mother trucking break. Holy hell but you need to get a grip.
This is Michigan!
August 25th, 2011 at 9:44 PM ^
Or did you forget what happened the last time? We used the "this is Michigan" bull crap in our first meeting which resulted in probably the most embarrasing loss in NCAA football history. "Michigan" by itself does not win games. Good planning, coaching and execution do. We didn't have it last meeting under Lloyd. And until Hoke drops the "this is Michigan" rant and proves to me that he truly "gets it" and wins at Michigan, scheduling this game was a horrible decision.
August 25th, 2011 at 9:53 PM ^
....a horrible decision? Your decision to type this pathetic excuse for a comment. I pray for your weak soul.

So we should just run away from every school that's beaten us? Is that how we'll regain our lost respect?
August 25th, 2011 at 10:58 PM ^
Even if we beat them by 50. Imagine if we beat them, but only by 6. We will still be the laughing stock of college football

August 25th, 2011 at 7:16 PM ^
Why not? It's not like we'll treat the game like we did[n't] before The Horror, and it was only by underestimating the Mountaineers was it even possible.
Hoke will have the players he wants, we'll play like Michigan, and we'll them the way we should've back in '07. Maybe not by 50, but I think it's safe to say that as long as we don't look past them, we'll definitely emerge as The Victors.
It's an opportunity to face our demons - while I appear to be in a tiny minority, I say we go for it.

Never subsides. Still, after (should) we destroy ASU and ASU receives its payday, there ought be fewer night terrors. You will have to get by as best you can until then. Of course, things could grow worse afterwards. The possibility exists. Dave embraces that I guess.

Listen, for lightning to strike Michigan twice on this we would need the following ingredients on August 30, 2014:
1. Must be storied head coach's final season at Michigan ( possible, not probable)
2. Michigan must be ranked in the Top 10 teams in the nation (both possible and probable, given Michigan's nice recruiting as of late)
3. Must have 4 Heisman Trophy candidates on the roster (Henne, Long, Hart and Manningham) - (Um, let me thi...No. That will not happen again for a loooong time).
4. Must have Debord and R. English (YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAYY!, We Win! Sorry Appy State!)
This game is 3 years off. Michigan football has nothing to worry about.
August 25th, 2011 at 8:13 PM ^
5. The game must be televised on an obscure new cable channel that no one gets, because their providers are playing a game of chicken with the Big Ten.
August 25th, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
I don't want to play FCS teams anymore, but if we're going to, why not take on App State again? It would be a far more compelling matchup than any other possible FCS team. And really, do we want that school to forever hold a 1-0 record against us?
August 25th, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
Talk about old wounds, will RichRod be coaching the mountaineers?
August 25th, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
Appy St. 2011 (redshirt?) Freshman QB Kameron Bryant?
I'm pretty sure he'll redshirt this fall with last year's backup So. QB Jamal Jackson returning for 2011
One fine day Michigan will land an obscure 2-star recruit that will rip out someone else's aorta on a sunny September Saturday for a change....
August 25th, 2011 at 8:38 PM ^
I don't want Michigan to ever be as huge an underdog as App State was that day. I want to be the favorite. Even if it means occasionally being the butt of jokes when we lose, it's still a sign of respect.
August 25th, 2011 at 8:32 PM ^
I swear to God, if we lose to them/celebrate like we just won the NC after we beat them I'll quit watching college football forever.

I think we should call the Big Ten and cancel the game with OSU. Because they'll spend all week talking about how we haven't beaten them in so long, and I don't think I can handle it if we lose again. Come to think of it, Brandon needs to make sure we don't play Sparty again, because if they win 4 in a row, I don't know if I'll survive another year of the Michigan media. Can we just do like T-Ball, and not keep score, and everyone plays?

I say we go with 2007. Henne, Hart, Long -- man, that team was loaded, and they came out of the gate like a house on fire! Plus, it would be a great tribute to Lloyd's last, magical year. Brandon's gonna be able to market the bejeesus out of this one!
August 25th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
Why would App State even do this?
If they need money, they can play dozens of other FBS schools that need to fill in a September home date. They are at the top of the FCS/beginner FBS food chain.
The win over Michigan put them on the national map. I work with a guy from App State. I didn't even know it until after the Horror. He said he was always ashamed to say he was from a school called "Appalachain State". But not so after they beat us. Today he says with pride he's from Appalachain State. It's still the same isolated podunk school with a bad video and a worse name.
It cannot be understated how much that victory meant to them and how it completely redefined them. Why pop the bubble by getting pounded on national television and reminding everyone that all you really did was catch a superior team sleepwalking in its season opener?

Friends, please show some restraint. Losing in 2007 was horendous, and playing a I-AA school really has no gain. We must though, bury this hatchet once and for all! Now to really hit them where it hurts.....

Many people are questioning why people are so upset about scheduling Appalachian State when their team is cupcake-caliber. Here's my reasons:
1) Bad publicity surrounding the game. There's no reason why Michigan should be encouraging the MSM and rivals to recall that god-awful game that happened 4 years ago. Seriously. None. It's even theoretically possible that publicity of this game negatively affects recruiting (a long shot, but recruiting is finnicky as it is). Publicity of the results of the game can't be good either, since winning this game by 200 points will still bring back memories of 2007.
2) Scheduling a cupcake game 3 years in advance. Any guesses as to how many cupcake games are currently scheduled for the 2013 game? ZERO. That's right; it's more important for the football team to schedule a 2014 Appalachian State game than it is to fill out the 2013 schedule or the last game in 2012. The only rationale that Appalachian State gets scheduled this early is because Michigan wants a rematch of this game after feeling sore the first time around.
This sends a message to the world that goes against everything that Hoke stands for.
The only way for Michigan to claim superiority, "be Michigan," and "get it" is if Michigan treats every cupcake game the same, whether they have won or lost to them. That means all cupcakes are to come into the Big House to receive a paycheck and get their asses kicked. That's it. Regardless of what happened in the past. This sort of special treatment is exactly what a team like Appalachian State wants to obtain from Michigan: public recognition that their team should be respected. If Michigan wants to be Michigan, this game doesn't get scheduled until it got scheduled for the 2007 season, which was like 4-5 months before kickoff.

My birthday usually falls the day of or before the 1st game. (Sept 3rd!) needless to say it was the most depressing 21st birthday of all time. I like this choice, it will be interesting.

Same local sample, but it seems most people like it or don't care, and the whine factor is small, though apparently loud. At least around here. I wonder if the Blog's Emo take on everything attracts the small emo/football fan segment. Or, more likely, I wonder if it has something to do with the age of the person. If THE HORROR is one of your only, or main memories of Michigan, and you have mainly experienced the last half decade, give or take, that you've just lost all confidence in Michigan and it's more something you don't want to relive. And if you're a bit older, you're more confident in Michigan being Michigan, and not dodging anyone because people might say things that hurt our feelings. Or that we might, gulp, lose.
