One interesting comment was that he looked at the transcripts first. I wonder if those are available to all coaches, or if the coach needs to request them and then the player approves? The fact he was so quick to get through that first step really says something compared to the pursuit of Caleb Love last year.
Good writeup. During his presser, Dusty talked about wanting to have two 'lead guards' on the floor so a defense can't cut the head off the snake by locking up the primary ball-handler, so having Phat Phat and Cason as long-term options - acknowledging the portal may wreak some havoc here - sounds like a really solid plan for years 2-4 of the Dusty era.
Brian was asking about the Tre Donaldson connect, it turns out he's from Florida and played on the AAU circuit, so Dusty was familiar with his game. One of their staffers played at Auburn so they had those games on and watched him quite a bit.
Coach can leave for a better opportunity with no problems, but 'student athletes' who are amateurs and definitely not employees can't do the same? Yep, that sounds like the NCAA I know and loathe. Time to get that attorney who is laying waste to the NCAA on the case.
Tough to improve upon "quarterbacked the best power play in college hockey in over a decade". Good luck Seamus, I wish you well in your quest to add to Michigan's rich legacy of players dominating the NHL.
Sam's second hand story on what Jesse Minter told Junior Colson will make Colson's rookie season a point of interest. He could be well positioned to have a great season.
According to 11 Warriors (cute name) their 2018 class was the highest rated class in program history. My guess is it's a talent development problem, not a talent acquisition problem.
Jim was pushing for revenue sharing with the players and gave his performance bonus to AD employees who saw their compensation take a hit during Covid, so it's no shock the NCAA and AD found that distasteful. They couldn't get rid of Jim fast enough. Guys like Mel Tucker who are given a bonus pool for their coaching staff but pocket that money for themselves are a better fit for the current state of college football. Phonies like Dabo Swinney who talk about quitting the game if the players feel entitled to the billions of dollars in the sport are the kind of people the NCAA support.
I think it was Poole heading off to the NBA a year early that sent Beilein off to the NBA. It was also becoming a thing where programs with better "NIL" back then would let Beilein scout for them and then offer guys he'd shown interest in signing. I'm glad Dusty is working hard on the NIL front and is apparently having great success.
Brian wrote a post covering this. Many of these players were mentioned and he gives his viewpoint on how likely they are to consider portaling to Michigan.
It seems like the Louisville connection may have played a role here although Sherrone's time there doesn't line up with Alfrord's. It's a great sign that Sherrone is focusing on guys who can recruit. Get that NIL money cannon loaded up and LFG!
He seemed over the entire experience of having guys leave early for the NBA. I think it was Jordan Poole leaving early that pretty much convinced him he didn't want to continue on with the college game. Throw in the fact guys he recruits could get offered <del>a bag</del> NIL by other programs and the fact he would likely lose guys to the portal and I don't think he'd want to put up with the current version of college basketball.
Yeah, that really sucks. What is the benefit to being a season ticket holder if you can't get first priority on big games like tournaments? I don't know if the B1G has control here, but if so it's yet another sign they are a poorly run conference. It would be easy enough to allot a certain number of tickets to the home and away teams and then open everything up to the general public. But then you have to remember that this is a sport that prefers to have playoff games in empty arenas rather than on campus arenas that would be packed and make for a great atmosphere.
This website, which is based entirely on covering the main UofM sports teams, has a recurring bit where they do everything possible to avoid talking about the basketball team. That should tell you all you need to know about the total lack of interest in the team right now.
Yep, 8-20, dead last in the B1G, defensive play ranks in the 300s, there's nothing for people to get excited about. Don't forget during the Brandon/Hoke era there was a time when you could get football tickets for 2 sodas. It's all about the product being put out, and right now that's on Warde Manuel and Juwan Howard. If we were the #2 ranked team in the country the place would have been filled with Michigan fans.
He's won everywhere he's coached, he had a very successful run in the NFL before coming to Michigan. Now to be honest, I was kinda done with Harbaugh like many were after the 2020 season. Don Brown got got, Harbaugh didn't seem to have the same intensity that made him an elite coach, and during that 2020 season it just felt like he no longer had that 'attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind' disposition. With the help of Biff Poggi, some awesome recruits like Mike, Blake and JJ, and a staff reboot, Harbaugh found his way back. The rest, as is said, is history.
Sadly, there's nothing elite about Juwan. He's probably a solid Xs and Os coach, but his recruiting isn't great, his roster composition is horrific, he has anger issues, and the defense is just unbelievably bad. Last I checked, we ranked #324 in defensive efficiency. It's atrocious.
I love Juwan, but there's no part of his time coaching Michigan Basketball where you can say you build around X (great offense, great defense, great recruiting, etc). At least with Beilein he was a genius with offensive design. Get him a great defensive coach like Yaklich and you have the makings of a really entertaining and competitive team.
The football coach I use as a comparison for Juwan is Brady Hoke: great guys, both parts of a legendary time in program history, but just totally incapable of coaching a program like Michigan.
JJ, Will Johnson, and Donovan Edwards were all 5 star prospects. You need 5 stars. Not all of them hit, and you can occasionally find guys like Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham who are going to end up having 5 star production, but you need difference makers.
If you aren't going to pay for talent, you are putting yourself at a big disadvantage.
Translation: everyone is using NIL as compensation for services provided, time for the NCAA to get with the times. Warde Manuel, you understand that, right?
Does Barnhart project to playing center in the NFL? Seems like his mobility and intelligence would be key traits for a center. He obviously never played center at Michigan so perhaps he sticks at guard.
Great advice. Also to echo the first poster, keep the debt as low as possible. Big debt means little to no money post-college and little flexibility. If he can graduate with low debt and lots of connections he should be able to figure out the job thing and do well for himself. Control the controllable and let the rest work itself out.
The Harbaugh coaching tree seems pretty great. Newsome has spent his entire coaching life under Harbaugh, who has very strong feelings about OL play and seems to be a big fan of Grant.
“Grant has been a positive, motivating force within our coaching staff since he joined us as a student assistant,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said in a statement. “We have had a front-row seat to Grant’s development as a coach and are excited that he has chosen to accept our offer to become a full-time assistant. He is a future star in this profession, and our players really respect what Grant is teaching on the field and the insight that he shares from life experiences.”
Clocks in at a nice, tight 4 hours and 26 minutes! Glad to hear it is high quality. Not a surprise, just figuring out when I am going to have nearly 4.5 hours to take it all in. Thanks again to the proprietors for providing us with insanely high quality content for free.
I can definitely see Kalel reprising DeVeon Smith's role of wearing DBs like a cape as he rumbles through the defense like Godzilla laying waste to a small fishing village.

Well we needed a new S&C coach and I'm guessing Dusty signed off on the hire so LFG!

This reminds me of the time Chris Pronger tried to take out Steve Yzerman and in the process blew out his knee when Yzerman ducked.
Good point, thanks for the clarification.

These are awesome Alex, thanks for putting them together.

And those sore losers north of us who had 1 player drafted. But yes, tell us it was all Conor Stallions.
Sometimes when Brian's on, he's really fucking on.

That's great, thank you - and thanks Alex and Dave.

I legit hope we forfeit our game in the B1G tournament. I know we won't but it would be the correct thing to do.
1. Skyfall. Feels like a better fit for our current times, plus Javier Bardem is a supreme villain.
2. Rick from Rick and Morty. Back to the Future is very dated, so like #1, Rick and Morty seem more relevant.
3. Heath Ledger as the Joker. Again, modern times.
4. No fucking way. The universe is far too vast to be explained by the Hokey Pokey.
Go Blue, f**k the Bucks.
I'm pretty sure that's how he completed that double pass in the Rose Bowl.

The Sherrone culture thing seems to be real. Only losing Sabb is a great sign.
Sounds transformational to me.
In one word, Harbaugh is 'elite'.

Jimmy building out that coaching tree. Good to see Kovacs working his way up the coaching ranks.
For Aaliya, the amount was $1,155.
Death to the NCAA.
No shirt, no pants, no problem. LFG!

IIRC, Harbaugh asked for the skinny M as an homage to Bo. I got a fitted jumpman one back in the day and I'm glad I did.
The Harbaugh coaching tree seems pretty great. Newsome has spent his entire coaching life under Harbaugh, who has very strong feelings about OL play and seems to be a big fan of Grant.
The Rose Bowl one was pretty great, particularly when Brian made it clear he would accept no Rose Bowl or Keith Jackson slander.

Technically it counts. If it was the only trophy they won it would be small consolation, that's for sure.
Europa …
He's won all of them before other than Europa so it would be nice to see him claim that one but the Premier League would be the best of the bunch.
It starts at the top: Sheila Ford Hamp.
The Jim Harbaugh vast network of advanced scouting. This would be the official name of the department for all the coaches who serve as analysts. LFG!
