Logged in to second Shiloh. …

Logged in to second Shiloh.  Its been 20+ years since I've been there, but when I went (early Spring) we were the only ones there, and there was a sense that the battlefield hadn't changed much.

Also, for those going to Ft Ticonderoga, you might as well go up on the northway to Plattsburgh to see the area where the Battle of Valcour was fought during the War of 1812, or go a little further south to Saratoga for another key revolutionary war battle site (besides just being a great town generally, whether you're into the ponies or not).

Can't agree with this more. …

Can't agree with this more.  I had heard horror stories about prep.  Don't get me wrong - it wasn't pleasant - but it wasn't nearly as bad as what I had expected.  I had a light diet starting 3 days before, fasted the day before, and had OTC medications (no chalk) starting ~16 hours before.

I was dreading the entire process and put it off multiple times, but it really wasn't that bad.  Get it done - the peace of mind is worth it.

And co-sign the comments about the sedative.  That part, at least, was great.

I don't think we can blame…

I don't think we can blame the lawyers for this; they aren't the ones who get to make the final decision on contract terms.  They are advising Santa and Warde for sure, but they aren't the principals.

IME, it is not at all strange in these situations for someone who has a perceived issue to put it all on the table, tell the employer to get comfortable with their diligence and go in eyes wide open.  An analogy is an employee who has a non-compete with a prior employer; the employee tells the putative employer about it, lets them diligence it, and the putative employer either gets comfortable with it or they don't.

I think the real hold up stems from one of two things that are not mutually exclusive.  First, UM may be doing its diligence to understand exactly what they have been told and how the NCAA and B1G will respond.  Second, there may be reluctance to "get comfortable" if the downside is that the NCAA hits Harbaugh with a show cause (however remote that may be) and UM still has to pay him eight figures. No matter how much we love Jim and the football team, that is a very difficult, and potentially career altering, conversation for Santa and/or Warde to have with the trustees.

Looking for 2 tix to the national championship game to go with my son. Happy to pay fellow wolverines, less happy to pay secondary site fees.  Would like to be between the 20s but don't mind being high up.

I have been thinking a lot…

I have been thinking a lot about this too.  Undoubtedly they have someone else who can snap, but the combination of snapping, blocking (particularly after having to snap) and calling protection/diagnosing pressure is all part of it too.  Alabama must have come to the conclusion that a couple of bad snaps a game was less of an issue than taking a step down in those other areas.

Speaking of spotting, did…

Speaking of spotting, did anyone else spot Seth in the crowd?  It was in the third quarter, one of those moving overhead shots coming back from a commercial.  He was in the lower left of the screen.  I pointed to the TV and yelled "hey! That's Seth from MGoBlog!" My ever indulgent wife just looked at me like I was crazy and then said "this is a cult" and then I said "Hey!  Did you read the NYTimes piece?  It is a cult, but one that saves people!"

My son's birthday was last…

My son's birthday was last week.  We decided over the summer to surprise him with a trip to the Game - the only gifts we had wrapped for him were a pair of Michigan socks and a beat Ohio State pin.  We arrived on Friday night.  We got up early on Saturday, and he was so pumped that we were in the stadium 2 hours before kickoff. That kid didn't move from his seat for nearly 7 hours.  On the way in it dawned on him that this would be the last great regular season CFB game and we just soaked it all in - the pregame warmups, the pageantry of the bands, touching the banner.  When he woke up on Sunday, his first words were "that was amazing".  When we got home that night we immediately watched the replay.

We also met up with a friend of mine who is a tOSU fan - he drove up from another city and happened to buy tix in the same section.  We had gone to the 2013 game together and sat in similar seats - obviously a much better outcome this time around.

I'm thread-jacking a bit, but can we start a KickStarter to raise $1mm for definitive proof that another B1G school was doing the same thing that we have been accused of doing?  I would actually like to do this multiple times just to show how widespread this likely is...

Couldn't agree with this more.  The sound was terrible, particularly in the first half. The piped in music is especially embarrassing when it doesn't work properly.  And there was that one time when the ref's whistle came over the speaker system.

I used to drive across…

I used to drive across southern Ontario on my way to and from school - mostly uneventful at the border, other than one time when I was told to pull over by the Canadian border patrol.  I had to get out of the car while they did a top to bottom search.  They were polite about it (they are Canadian after all).  Other than wasting an hour of my time, it wasn't horrible.  It seemed worth it because the roads were well maintained, there was little traffic, and after you passed 2 cops you could feel pretty confident going 95 mph without any issues.

My current set up is an Artisan built-in for every day gas grilling and a primo oval for charcoal grilling and smoking.  I like them both but honestly there isn't anything you can't do with a standard weber kettle grill and, for convenience, a weber Q series.  I had a Weber Q300 that I grilled on for 12 years - it was awesome and the only reason I gave it up is because I moved out of state.

Not technically "relevant" but I had a proud dad moment at MetLife this weekend. The sing-along song was Mr. Brightside and my 11 yo and 9 yo sang their hearts out after doing it a couple of times at the Big House.  A lot of confused Jets fans in my section.

Thank you for posting this - as I was watching this I was screaming at the TV.  Textbook targeting - DeJean leads with the crown of his helmet and puts it in Roman's earhole.  No flag, no review, nothing from the announcers.  And then we had to hear about the bad call on clipping about 100x.

I went yesterday for the first time in ~5 years.

The situation re getting people into the stadium is an embarrassment.  It should not take 30 minutes to get into a sporting event.

The concessions are terrible, both in terms of choices and in terms of the lines.  They need a vendor who understands the value of throughput.  Fans who have paid to get in understand that they are a captive audience and will be required to pay a premium for concessions, but would buy more if (1) the choices were decent and (2) they didn't have to miss half the game to get a hot dog and a drink.

As others have said, the MC is a terrible idea.

The media timeouts are what they are.  My son and his friend started counting down the timeouts with gusto.

On the positive side, there is still nothing like going to a game at the big house, and everyone is remarkably friendly.  The walk to and from the stadium, seeing the band, everyone cheering in unison, Grapentine... its all magic.

I went to public school…

I went to public school through 7th grade and then went to an all-boys Jesuit school from 8th grade on.  I was definitely at the lower end of the economic spectrum (there was a clear east/west divide in my town, and I was from the poorer side; there were very few people who attended from my side of town).

It was the single best educational decision I have made.  The teachers challenged me, the extracurricular activities were great, and the simple fact that everyone had the same expectation of achievement made a real difference.

I never had an issue with girls or women.  I remained friends with a lot of my neighborhood friends from public school, and there were a number of activities with our sister school.  I'm sure it was different from the experience I would have had in public school, but I never felt stunted.

With respect to your second question, I was never made to feel like a second-class citizen.  It may have had something to do with the size of the school (~125 kids in each grade), but everyone seemed to get along and be inclusive.  I ended up with strong friendships across the socioeconomic spectrum.  My sense is everyone was judging everyone else on merit (athletic, academic or otherwise) much more than they were on wealth/privilege.

FWIW, I now have 2 kids who have yet to reach middle school.  We have tried both public and private and nothing seems perfect.  Everything I read suggests that outcomes don't deviate substantially so long as a student's parents are actively engaged and the school they go to has a baseline level of quality and, not surprisingly, safety.  I have told my kids that if they are interested in any school, we will help them explore it and apply if they want to go.

PS - I give more $$ to my high school than either university I attended.

It is incredible that Harry…

It is incredible that Harry shared this with the world.  That is no small feat.  I hope a lot of people see it and take it to heart.

It is also fantastic that Ryan Day reacted the way he did.  I don't think all coaches would have been able to recognize the issue and address it, but he did and he should be commended for it.

I think Harry touches on one of the most insidious things about depression and mental health issues - that they exist often in spite of, and not because of, what is happening externally.  He is incredibly successful and has an incredible future and yet he struggles.  I think a lot of folks who haven't experienced true depression have a very difficult time grasping this, since it is so counterintuitive, but at the times when outwardly it seems like you have everything to live for, depression nevertheless stalks you.  It really is frightening.

I don't get to say this often, but I'm a little young for this one, but that doesn't mean I don't have a story.

Apparently my old man was a Mike Oldfield fan and had tubular bells on 8 track or phonograph or whatever he had in whatever beat up car he had in high school.  He and a bunch of buddies go to see the Exorcist on opening weekend.  They were all scared to death.  And then they got in the old man's car, and the theme song started blaring as soon as he turned the key.  Apparently they all screeched and jumped out of the car.

Also agree with Costa Rica.  Arenas Del Mar near Manuel Antonio is a great place to just chill for a few days with easy access to wildlife and a great beach.

Interesting analysis of the Dyatlov Pass incident (which, IIRC, also included an explanation of people taking off their clothes when suffering from hypothermia).

And yes, i linked to Skeptoid in the Bigfoot thread.  I'm not a shill for the site - but it often gives a lot of good background history on the various conspiracies.  I'm also absolutely fascinated by these stories and by the social psychology that drives them.  Fwiw, there is no episode on the Yuba 5...

I recognize that I insulted your profession (and mine, fwiw) with hyperbole, but when you see a bankruptcy lawyer do criminal defense and see a sports agent try and do an M&A transaction (both of which I've seen recently), I really don't think you can warn people enough about the few bad lawyers out there.
