Ty Cobb’s record of stealing home 54 times is the most unbreakable record in any sport.

Take a look at the data in…

Take a look at the data in the charts, it reflects my points.

You’ll see subscriber base is well outpacing the satellite growth. Subscribers have increased over 2x but number of satellites has increased 0.5x.  The growth in satellites is less than expected/needed because of the less-than-expected lifetimes for the Starlink satellites.  In other words, too many satellites are needing to backfill to replenish than to be growth.

Because of this, download speed is pretty much stagnant.  Yeah, adding a bunch of subscribers, and yeah the constellation is adding satellites, but the service is staying pretty much the same.

None of this addresses the location of the users, which is its own problem for the business case.

So basically Starlink has a negative business case that it has some major challenges to crawl out of.

As far as latency, the difference between the highest Starlink orbit and high-altitude balloons is less than 0.002 seconds difference.

Between LEO and GEO is 0.16 seconds.

So the difference in 2-way (uplink/downlink) between your high-altitude case and GEO is 0.32 seconds.  The trade in latency is negligible for the purposes of Starlink.  Even the military uses GEO for real-time controlling of UAVs.

Starlink uses LEO because it matches up to low-cost/low-tech and a strong launch cadence, and BFR being more about volume launch of Starlink than Mars.  Like many/most/almost-all business cases, there’s a bunch of unforeseen challenges.

The subscriber base issue has been a known from the start, but of that chart you shared, if you strip out the people that they actively do not want to have, the growth is way too low.

As a business, Starlink has…

As a business, Starlink has 3 major problems:

1. The spacecraft are not lasting as long as expected/hoped and they can’t be built and launched fast enough for the capacity they need to be profitable.  Having a monster launch vehicle is only good if you can fill it.  Having a great launch cadence is only good if your supply of spacecraft is equal to it.

2. The subscriber base isn’t nearly as evenly distributed as was expected/hoped.  As a low Earth orbit constellation, the whole network has to be effectively scaled at every single point simultaneously to the area of peak demand.   While there are users all over the place, that the density/volume of the user base is much much larger in the places that don’t need satellite internet is an issue.  Adding a user sitting in the middle of the Australian Outback is great.  Adding another one in NYC means you need to be able to accommodate more capacity.  This is why geostationary Earth orbit has been the legacy - 1 spacecraft seeing almost half the earth by itself.  But you trade redundancy, latency, cost, etc. for it.

3.  It’s a race against time to fix 1 and overcome 2.  Starlink, et. al. are all being funded by debt backed by an absurdly over-inflated Tesla stock price.  Elon is in a much more dangerous game of getting a margin call, so to speak, than people realize.  And because there’s so much debt out there backed by a single massively over-inflated stock price, his terms are not friendly because no bank wants to be at the end of the line if the house comes crashing down.

Who knows what really went…

Who knows what really went down, but regardless of what did, the biggest long-term issue is that Pettiti has now found himself (and a source in the future of) intra-conference political capital in case he needs it, and that capital is at our expense.

You bet that if he gets himself into a bad spot and/or job in question, he has:

1) direct evidence for 13 of the 14 schools that he’ll take action on their behalf

2) a “well” that he can go to that will take it

This isn’t making something go away, this is kicking a can down the road, and inviting him to do it again when he needs to (or wants to maintain good faith with the general membership not named the University of Michigan).

Someone needs to get to editing out “we bow to no one” out of James Earl Jones’ intro.

As an aside, this is the same crap as I have with my other alma mater (Syracuse).  I’m sure that many of you have the narrative of SU basketball cheating.  A player works reffing basketball games during summer at the YMCA and gets paid $200, and a tutor corrects a footnote at the bottom of a player’s term paper and SU rolls over and takes it - multiple seasons of wins vacated, crippling scholarship losses - Same shit, different university.

I wish Michigan was like SU lacrosse in the early 90’s - a coach’s mom co-signs a car loan (no money changes hands) and the NCAA vacates a national title.  So SU refuses to give the trophy back, it goes into hiding (maybe it’s with the ‘98 MClub banner…), and they raise the banner anyway.  F the NCAA. https://www.syracuse.com/orangelacrosse/2015/05/syracuse_lacrosse_coach_john_desko_on_vacated_1990_title_we_felt_we_won_the_cham.html

And while we’re at it with Michigan, raise the f’ing banners.
