Date Title Body
And, deleted text messages??… And, deleted text messages?? If the Feds do come in, or are asked by a court, they (the NSA) has access to all digital transmissions ever made. They are stored. All they have to do is search and they will appear. Even if not, a digital footprint is never completely erased, the FBI tech guys can probably find most if not all of them.
Doesn't this give fuel to ZS… Doesn't this give fuel to ZS's wife and attorney for a possible civil suit vs. OSU as an enabler? And is there a Title IX issue here, which would bring the Feds in (meaning the FBI as the investigative body), and threaten OSU with a loss of mega-$$$'s in research and other Feds grant monies.
JOK is DOA

O'Korn's issues are multiple, but his biggest flaw is a glaring lack of control of trajectory.  Spread teams throw the ball short, quick release and flat.  A pro passing game demands the ball travel on multiple trajectories.  Deep balls in particular.  I saw Tom Brady in the spring game of 1998, his deep ball was impeccable not only for its distance and accuracy but he put really nice air under it to allow is guys to get to it effortlessly.  Every deep ball that JOK throws is a slightly modified line drive.  He puts the least air under it possible, because his training is to throw the ball flat for receives to quick catch and run.

He may play this weekend, but like PSU, you will see 9 in box, lots of blitzes and no room for receivers because they know he cannot take the top off on any down with any protection level.  It;s just not his game.

Fisch

Wasn't the original plan that Dreveno get the SJS HC job, Fisch ascend to OC (keep the Qb's) and WR coach was a guy Oregon stole (Wille Taggert stole).  If UCLA axes Mora, likely they want an established coach so Fisch could be available again.  He would be the first choice, although I like Troy Walters at UCF (not sure his loyalty to Frost or desire to go to Lincoln with him).

We are young...

Michigan is a very young team, and is missing some pieces....like QB... to fully realize JH's vision.

Remember what the O looked like with Jake Rudock running it late in the 2015 season.  There was a senior level pocket QB comfortable with the pocket and B1G game speed.  The line was still porous, but mostly upper classmen, so it was effective.  That O could was dangerous.  We saw lots of hints of what the JH vision will be in it.  But, the void of 2014-2015 talent aqusitions is now catching up with us.  Peters/McCaffery are the future.  Either can be soooo much better with the JH philosophy.  They are working to build a OL franchise (like UM always had), but they also have to field a team every year and scholi's just can be for OL depth.  Add to that JH believes that OL is the latest developing position in CFB.  They need 2 years of strength/techinque building before they even see the field, in JH's opinion.  So we are 2 yrs from having that.

Lastly, IMHO, the future is now.  You might say you play JOK for the seniors to give them the best last season possible at this point.  But, for the program and fans, waiting to "educate" Peters/McCaffery to B1G game speed is nothing to delay.  QB's do not learn to operate in the game, by not being in the game.  They HAVE to make mistakes to get better.  It won't always be fun, but the payout next year and beyond will be significant.

Playing JOK or even WS at this point is the coaches call, but the program only gets better when that position gets better, and the road to better begins now with Peters/McCaffery.  (Just think Peyton Manning as rookie in the NFL, the beating he took made him one of the best QB's ever. same for others like Philip Rivers, same for Cam Newton, same for Terry Bradshaw, same for Joe Flacco, Ben Rothlisberger, Dak Prescott....the list is long for getting the learning over early so the later is so very, very good).  True the list of guys who fail is longer yet, but if you think you have the guy, playing him now is the shortest route to excellence for him and the team.

Peters or Not Peters

Complexity is in the eye of the beholder.  So Dantonio says he saw 40 formations...really?? He is the best source.  But even so, its what you do with them that makes it complicated.  And not every player is affected by every formation.  If the FB is positioned directly behind the QB or offset or on the wing, while everyone else is static, is that 3 formations, one guy affected.  His job, route is likely different in each position, but not everyone else's.

I remember that to help Jake Rudock, they called the plays, but the downfield reads were restricted to one-half the field.  That helped him be more efficient and by games 8-10 he was pretty good and seeing the whole field.  Have they done that with O'Korn?, don't know.

I think we have seen the real JOK, at PUR and at MSU.  He takes chances, he fits things into tight windows and when successful he looks good, but he also turns it over a lot, misses a lot.  He does not throw a good deep ball, so defenses are not too worried about his takig the top off and crowd the middle and short zones.  It is why he was better at HOUS, but also why he was later passed by....ball security is everything.

Every decision in context, we have a Ferrari of a D and a Model T of an O.  How do you win with that?  But, more importantly, that D is not static it will change next year and the year after with grads and early NFL guys, so do you waste it now backing a RS Frosh QB's learning curve or do you fit the O to the players, limit the risk the QB presents and simplify the OL executions and get 20-24 pts per game and win with field position and defense?  Jim Tressel made a career and won an NC just doing that.  While I dislike the guy, his "strategy" was excellent for his talent and frustrating for his opponents.

If we had done just that on SAT, we would have won.

Proverbs 16:18

"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."   --- so says every English translation of the Bible, this one is from the King James version

Pride does not come before a fall....that's nonsense.

Schroedinger's Cat

We must open the box to see if the cat is alive or dead, until then he is both.  Shane is both good and bad, until he is not.  Playing is the only measure, JH said so in his presser.  He is looking for gamers in the non-conf but not during practice.  He is more interested in how they take their practice learnings to the field.  Shane will get his time under the microscope next season and then we will know.

UM Not Leverage

I think the reverse has happened.  Hackett submitted a qualifying offer in the $6 million range, that gave him cred to go further.  The further however was what ever the NFL would pay Jim.  So after the loss put SF out of the playoffs the NFL'ers weighed in with the agent, the agent relayed to Hackett what the new "salary floor" for Jim H looked like with professional teams setting the price.  Hackett then confirmed that he was getting serious consideration, the agent says yes and he pops not only a CFB leading salary offer, but one that only 3 NFL guys (Payton, Carroll and Belichick) get.  That offer, combined with Jim's interest have us where we are today, guardedly hopeful, and still very much in the mix of things.

Peyton Makes $8 M

Sean Peyton already makes $8M and the Pats will soon make BB the highest paid again with something closer to $9M.  In his four NFL years JH has the same winning record as BB, who is has the best record in the league over that period.  JH has been to 3 NFC title games and a SB.  Sean Peyton is close those kind of numbers but not quite.  So is JH worth $8M, the NFL market likey will say so.  Is he worth less to CFB?  Why they are getting a top 5 coach with eilite coaching skills, but we should pay him less than other guys, because other guys in CFB don't make that much, why?  He should be paid what he is worth.  If that is too expensive for UM then we should move on now.

The Other Harbaugh

Why is John out of the mix.  It is just as likely now that the Ravens miss the playoffs.  He already has a SB, so his selling pt is now winning a NC like Jimmy Johnson and the guy from OK (both with the Cowboys) did after their college success.  And if it is true that Jim H is staying in the pros, then why not.  Less pressure, and the boss would likely be better than his current lunatic billionaire owner.  So I say John Harbaugh (who I think is actually the favorite of the Regents).  And, while most will say he has already said NO!  If you read what he said it was the perfect non-denial denial.  He would most likely try to keep Mattison (who was his DC at BAL for a while) and is a great recruiter.  And I would bet he would bring a bright mind to innovate the offense, not Cameron, but like Sonny Cumbie at TCU or Noel Mazzone at UCLA or Dave Christensen at Utah.

Silence is Golden

I think the quiet is telling.  Hackett has not been sitting in his office twiddling his thumbs or moseying around campus kibitizing with students. He has been working.  Working hard on this one decision he has to make.  And, because there is no rush to can BH (signaling UM is looking for a coach) as otther schools have done to fling their hats into the coaching search scramble, it tells me that either 1)  a deal in principle is done with either or both Jim Harbaugh and Les Miles, or 2) we are about to suffer a very painful late scramble for a coach due to Hackett and Schlissel not studying the past two FB coaching changes.  I feel #1 is correct and since neither JH or LM could possibly acknowledge anything before JAN, and because Hoke's payout drops like $1 milllion come JAN 1.  No decision will be made (nor needed) before then.  Fans and media may be disappointed because they don't get fret and analyze and follow jets around the country, but I think UM nation will be very happy with this outcome.

Spot on...

No candidate is talking, frankly, none could unless they are currently unemployed.  If you have an AD or coaching job now, even admitting you would consider offers has serious negative consequences:  just ask the BC FB coach who did so and was fired immediately without having a new job to go to.  And the NFL is worse.  Tampering  in the NFL, by contract has very serious monetary consequences, so no NFL guy would ever say he was looking at other jobs.

All contact for either UM position is likely being handled by Hackett, Schlissel and UM legal staff, or better yet, corporate counsel.  The contact is not likely direct, but through agents or other intermediaries.  Since no big committees exist that are guiding/informing the searches, only two guys on the UM side know anything.  So reports anywhere of who is being considered or what that status might be, unless they cite Hackett or Schlissel or an agent or itermidiary for the candidate, they are just guesses, wild speculation.  The candidates themselves can say nothing, reveal nothing for the present.

Be Quick but Don't Hurry...

Words famously used by John Wooden to describe the tempo he expected them to establish.  There is pressure here, not immediately obvious from the way Schlissel and Hackett are viewed as handling things, but there is a deadline.

FB season ticket renewals are not far off.  Current holders will be asked in JAN to renew their right to purchase tickets by sending a check for the "seat license" portion in JAN.  What happens if no AD and no coach by then?  What happens if the choice is not made, or even worse, is not the homerun anticipated.  How many non-renewals (or simply delays) do you think it will take to force someone's hand?  2K, 4K, 5K, 10K.  It is not farfetched that with no waiting list there is much less risk to any season ticketholder in simply not paying/responding as a way to make a point about how important this overhaul is to not just 2015 but the total future of the AD.  Quite a few folks could simple "delay" and what could UM do to them.  Wtih no waiting list pulling their tickets would simply pour gas on the already smoldering "attendance fire."

Several articles have said that in the donors meeting Schlissel was told no more $$'s until this is fixed, and other accounts add that they made it clear to the Prez:  "fix this now".  Maybe the DB firing "fixed it for now" but I for one think that bubblegum on the dyke will quickly fade as a bandaide on emotions.  Firing DB was necessary, but it is not the salve that will heal the wound.  ONLY one hire, the new FB coach will do that.  That is the pressure Hackett and Schlissel face.  The day where real folks get to weigh-in with their pocketbooks is fast approaching, just over two months away, so they don't have to "hurry" but they do need to be "quick".

Ask For Help

The best choice is one that has input from the coaching fraternity.  If Hoke wants a particular style he should seek input (Stanford/Harbaugh for a manball type for example) from others (talk to the Pats about a modern hybrid pro-style if that is where he wants to go).  He cannot possibly know the options out there.  And he needs to replace the Mattison/Hoke DL coaching with a real coach (we were better/more cohesive with Montgomery) not those two part time.
