Kalis may be working his way

Kalis may be working his way back into the lineup at RG, moving Magnuson over to LG and bumping Bosch out of the lineup, but you didn't hear that from me.

No, not really. Later though

No, not really. Later though I asked him if he ever receives coaching input from his players (seniors, captains) and all he said was "Yeah. We talk." And then he stared into my soul for a few seconds.

The first string units take a

The first string units take a handful of snaps against each other every day at the end of practice and when doing situational drills (red zone, goal line, two-minute). Positions groups will go against each other by depth chart, too (starting receivers against starting corners, starting O-line vs. starting D-line). I'm pretty sure the coaches are fully aware of what matchups they like to have in practice in order to give everyone the best looks.

Addendum

I went back and forth about whether or not to include this, but I guess I asked it, so ... here it is:

MGoQuestion: Brady said he thought the game plan was correct, but hindsight is always 20/20. Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?

"I won't answer that question. I won't answer it. That's a loaded question. There's no way to answer that. Obviously we thought we were doing what was best. Looking back with 20/20 [hindsight] has an effect on Nebraska. It has no effect on Michigan State."

I've thought about

I've thought about attributing other reporters, but I decided against it because people are sensitive about these things. A great question to one person may seem like a stupid question to someone else. Plus most of them are not there looking for penetrating and intellectual discussions about football. They're there to get quotes for their stories, and sometimes coaches answer crappy questions more willingly than good ones.

Anyway, the guy who asked that question was Craig Ross, who is the man.

I made a mental note to check

Wouldn't worry about Clark at

Wouldn't worry about Clark at 3-tech. He's strong and not that much lighter than Jibreel. He could be effective there as a mismatch vs. guards on passing downs.

I sure showed him!

I sure showed him!

Sorry, I should have

Sorry, I should have clarified: 2nd best backup. Glasgow has been taken snaps at both left guard and center and is better suited for guard than Braden. In fact there has been word percolating from practice that Glasgow managed to execute a reach block effectively. Anyway, I think the rationale for moving Braden to tackle was because 1) tackle is his ultimately destination, and Michigan is short on tackles next year, 2) Bryant is a better guard and is better at pulling, and 3) Glasgow can backup at left guard if center doesn't work out.

Yeah there was some

Yeah there was some reshuffling because of Bryant's absence. I'm just saying that Braden hasn't practiced at guard since Bryant took the spot about a week ago. With Bryant out I'm sure Braden is at least the 2nd best option at left guard. He did spend most of spring practice there, after all.

Unfortunately I don't have

Unfortunately I don't have any real insight as to why they didn't play. I do know that Black has been out for about a week, though, which is why we heard about Tom Strobel getting more snaps at 3-tech when the BTN guys went to Michigan's practice.

No. I was asking about ball

No. I was asking about ball placement. Previously Borges instructed all his QBs to err on the side of overthrowing his receivers to avoid jump ball situations. As we all saw in 2011, a lot of underthrown balls ended up being big plays because our receivers were so good at outjumping DBs. Borges said that made him rethink the ball placement philosophy a bit. I was just wondering if he still felt that way.

There's probably about 15 of

There's probably about 15 of us on any given day. Borges likes to pick on a few of us -- it's usually me, Chantel, and Angelique who regularly banter with him. The Daily kids will be here once the semester starts, so yes, right now I am one of the younger people on the beat.

When I retire from mgoblog after the season, I'll write up a post about my experiences. The press conferences aren't that exciting on a daily basis, but I've definitely collected some interesting observations over past couple years.

They were in nickel, so having a guy next to Wormley in a four-man front could have made him look like a 3-tech.

Black didn't practice,

Black didn't practice, either. That's why I'm guessing he had a boo boo. Strobel's and Wormley's positions come from people who have been at Michigan's practice.

Yup. Now will Strobel see the

Yup. Now will Strobel see the field this year? Uh, probably not.

A few notes:

Ahem.

  • Bolden ahead of Morgan is likely temporary. Morgan didn't practice Saturday, so I'm guessing he had some sort of boo boo.
  • No mention of Jibreel Black also probably has to do with a boo boo.
  • Strobel is a 3-tech, Wormley is an SDE.
  • No one beats Lewan in pass rush like ever.
  • Dymonte Thomas has been splitting time at backup nickel and backup safety.
  • I wouldn't count out Chris Bryant for LG. Other than Kalis, I think the other two interior line positions are pretty wide open. So yes, I am retracting my previous statement that Braden is a lock for LG.
  • I don't think Green and Beyer practiced this weekend. Still, the general sentiment is that Green will be fine. No idea about Beyer though.

Inexperience contributes more than lack of talent. The inability of tailbacks to create their own opportunities is probably a factor, too, albeit indepedent of line play.

Yeah, Damion Terry is way more dual threat. I don't think he's going to play this season, so I left him out of the conversation.

As far as Cook is concerned, he had positive yardage vs. TCU. In fact he converted on 3rd-and-7 with his legs. Also, just watch his high school highlights.
