Two interesting nuggets I picked up in Madison this weekend

Submitted by Maizen on

Sat in front of a parent of a player who said that our center has no idea (I think he was exaggerating a bit) what line protections to call against stems and stunts and that this was also a problem last year with Mason Cole. He said Michigan does too much big on big blocking and not enough combo and slide protections. I'm not an OL so I have no idea what this means. Probably not breaking news, but it was a confirmation of sorts that this might be a systemic problem.

The second tidbit I picked up was actually from a Wisconsin fan at dinner after the game at The Old Fashioned (great burgers if you ever make it to Madison). We got to talking about the game and the subject of some of those brutal calls (and no calls) came up. He said don't expect it to get better for Michigan. I asked why. He claimed he went to college with someone "high up" in the B1G office who deals with officials and that he's made several off handed comments to him about "sticking it" to Harbaugh and Michigan. The guy was laughing while he was telling me this like it was an open secret or something. I was going to press for more info but my friends were more interested in getting his takes on what bars to go afterwards. Like always take it fwiw.

EDIT: Can't be certain but after some digging I think this may be the guy he was referring to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Carollo

Get more info!  You were a lot more polite than I would have been with that kind of source material.  Names?  Proof?  Go on, dude, go on? (Order some more beers) He probably would have spilled a lot more.  I'm not criticizing the thread you are posting, I just wish you had gotten mroe details out of the guy!

Brian isn't upvoting his own posts.  Something you do literally everywhere, all the time.

And for the record, if Brian believes you had dinner with someone who went to college with someone "high up" in the B1G office and honestly knows/claims to know that the referees are purposely trying to "stick it" to Jim Harbaugh, AND believes there is some great conspiracy to do so, then I will say right here and now that he's being dumb as well.

You like, take these fake life points kinda serious huh. Did you ever stop and think I upvoted myself to piss you and the other people who constantly hijack my threads to bitch and moan about them off? Oh, and I really don't give a fuck what you or anyone else believes or not. Have a blessed day.

For someone who doesn't care about any of this, you sure seem sensitive about it.

I just don't like most of the stuff you post here.  It's lazy, reactionary BS and you are hyper-aggressive toward people who disagree with you.  Your rants about Beilein would get borderline offensive toward a variety of individuals, you'd make veiled claims about recruiting decisions that were full of dog-whistling, and more recently it's just been rant after rant about the football team, usually chock full of half-baked ideas and, at times, outright falsehoods.

I mean, I didn't even realize you posted this initially.  My initial take was based purely on the insanity of your statement that somebody knew somebody who thinks the conference's referees are actively in league to screw over Michigan because they don't like Jim Harbaugh.  That is utter bullshit, and if you didn't realize your friend was probably joking, then you should be taken to task for it.

But whatever man.  You apparently like to post seemingly really heartfelt posts here and then go about upvoting yourself and downvoting everyone else to spite them.  How you spend your time is up to you, but maybe pick some other hobby.

BTW, nice job upvoting yourself again.  You really got me there.

And yet...you came by and looked for my response, then downvoted it, then posted your own response, then upvoted that.

And I knew you would respond, and you'll respond to this one as well.  It's almost like you really do care about this silly site and how you're perceived here.

In my opinion, 1st part is a bit of an exaggeration. 2nd part is also a bit of an exaggeration, but many of the refs doing big ten games hate us. Bias comes into play especially in split second decisions, sad but true.

Nugget 1:  Our defense stunts all the time, so it's hard to believe they never practice defending that

Nugget 2:  That's probably BS, counter strike, etc

Is still a Fan that knows about as much as the guy sitting three rows ahead of you. The parent doesnt know anything about the blocking scheme or calls. The parent has privy to gossip that other fans may not have, which generally ends up being mindless babbling. So to pass along erroneous gossip as a "systemic" failures is downritght irresposible. Please take your nuggetts somewhere else. This is so Pathetic!

Honestly, why do we care? This is presented as something that he heard from a player parent, not a coach or administrator. It's presented as gossip. Take it for what it's worth, if only as discussion material.

The last three topics were a car accident death, reasons why we hate OSU, and the death of Charles Manson. But we're getting bent out of shape about someone relaying things they heard about the football team.

Is 99% based on WHO posted it and 1% based on what he said.

I firmy believe if you had posted the exact same content, word for word, the up/down votes would be completely reversed if not dramatically more so.  Look at the first comment in the thread and the votes it's receiving if you need further proof.

I don't care who posted it, I would down vote it as much as possible. the other threads are unrelated but still factual. This thread is BS. would you rather read about a random unrelated fact or a related rumor about a guy I know that had a friend that banged your wife? Your wife is relevant to you so let's talk about it further. he was laughing when he said it like everyone knew except you. anyway, take it for what it's worth and we all love your wife regardless of whether she is or is not a dirty whore. go wife!

True, but not only do people dislike Maizen in general, but he's also been posting stuff about the refs every week. And now he just so happens to talk to a guy who's good friends with someone high up in officiating who gives an evil laugh and talks about how everyone's out to fuck over Harbaugh. Hell of a coincidence.

I can say, with certainty, that during the Hawaii game, I thought to myself that he is putting a target on his back, with the refs....    we were up by like 40 pts, and he is going apeshit over every call, and I thought this was a very bad idea, having gone ape in the prior other games, and it felt like just enough bitching, to get the collective against him.....   not saying it is happening, but I thought this at the time.

That when doesn't Izzo suffer from this and why doesn't Beilen get like every call in his favor?  I understand the sentiment but there are plenty of coaches that go nuts (probably much worse) and still get plenty of calls (Saban, Meyer, Jimbo, etc.).

I feel like the first story was thrown in to make us buy the second.  Personally, I think it would be stupid and counterproductive for the BIG to have it out for Harbaugh and Michigan.  They are THE brand name that helps carry the BIG. I do believe in situations like Saturday where the BIG's priorities would be to get a team to the playoff, they COULD be against Michigan, but to say they are against them as a multi-year propostion is just cutting off your nose to spite your face.  The BIG cares about making money, and hindering Michigan does not help that goal.

not only with it hurt themselves but if this open secret ever got exposed they would all lose their jobs. I wouldn't be surprised if there were random comments about how Harbaugh is annoying but a full scheme against the school is ridiculous. Delaney would probably be looking at conspiracy charges if true. this is a massive allegation that no "high up" would joke about. UM could probably sue Delaney for damages and I doubt the Big10 liability policies would protect him.

I agree that Michigan should use slide pro more often. As for Kugler not being able to make the calls, I don't really believe that. Son of an OL coach, been playing center his whole college career, etc. Obviously it's not being executed properly, but that's mostly due to the right side of the line...which is where our two worst blockers reside. I don't think that's a coincidence.

I don't really believe part two. Harbaugh has gone overboard at times in the past, but so have a bunch of other Big Ten coaches (and coaches across the country).

He claimed he went to college with someone "high up" in the B1G office who deals with officials and that he's made several off handed comments to him about "sticking it" to Harbaugh and Michigan

This is so clearly something that doesn't even pass the basic common sense threshold.  Even if there was some grand conspiracy (which itself doesn't pass common sense threshold), why would some super important person with knowledge of it tell some rando he was college roommates with 2 decades ago.

Has been posted here before.  Says it all.  Bo called him out and the chickenshit response was, "We don't respond to former coaches."  You don't respond to current ones either, Delaney.  Are you kidding me?  Not even the standard denial of allegations, just "I'm not going to respond?" That was in 1990, pre-social media.  Today a story like that would be viral and invite some type of investigation/response.

Delaney has some real Brandon-esque tactics - actually, worse than Brandon interfering in the film room.  Calling to "offer advice."  What kind of advice would that mean?

I would need some clear and convincing evidence that Delaney doesn't hate Michigan.  The fact that Michigan lines his pockets means nothing.  He knows he can have it both ways.

still far from the allegation in the OP. first, it appears Illinois was actually targeted more than UM. did your friend mention a bias against Illinois? Is Lovie part of that punishment? Second, this doesn't come off as "don't let UM win" it's more of a bias against Bo's antics. I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh was warned also and that might be part of the reason he's calmer this year. That is far from bias. also Delaney can eat shit, this is not a defense of him.
