Syracuse Commit Ifeatu Melifonwu ('17) Sticking with Commitment

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

There was chatter that we might extend an offer to this kid. His older brother -- who was recruited by Don Brown -- also had a low rating and is now projected to go high in the draft.

Harbaugh's track record has proven that when it comes down to signing day he is ummm... "competitive" if you are a lower rated recruit. It is in Ifeatu's best interest to reaffirm his scholly commitment to Syracuse until everything shakes out on Wednesday.

He liked Syracuse better or he wanted to stay closer to home or his mother wanted him to go there or..... it's a guessing game. No one on this board or the so called experts have any information to give an informed opinion.

As others have suggested, it wouldn't be surprising if:

1.  Ifeatu Melifonwu was told that the Michigan coaches like him very much, but that a Michigan offer couldn’t be made to him before Wednesday out of respect for those whose offers have been extended for a long time and who have said that they would not decide before Wednesday; AND that he would get the offer IF Michigan didn’t get a certain player who had promised to commit to the Wolverines, but who changes his mind on Wednesday.

2.  He was told everything in the first point, AND he was willing to keep his options open, but Syracuse asked him to solidify his commitment today OR their offer might be withdrawn.

He doesn't seem like someone who would have pressured the Michigan coaches into extending an offer before they'd learned from their other prospects on Wednesday. Unless he were considering a career in broadcast journalism, or Syracuse told him that they also would let him play lacrosse, or he's a fan of more lake-effect snow than Ann Arbor ordinarily receives, choosing Syracuse over Michigan wouldn't make much sense IF he had received a Michigan offer.
