Michigan #10 in Mark Titus Power Rankings
Thought I'd post this because it's nice to see an Ohio guy with some high praise for Michigan. He tries to get the Beilein for Coach of the Year train going. Definitely a good read for hoops fans as well.

A recent poll conducted by Ohio State blog Eleven Warriors asked OSU fans whether a national championship in basketball or a win over Michigan in football is more important to them. Before I voted, I laughed to myself at how ridiculous the question was, because I was sure that nobody would seriously believe that a single regular-season football game matters more than the most celebrated national championship in college sports. But alas, more than 1,000 votes were cast, and 51 percent of those votes were for the football win over Michigan.
An interesting question. How do we feel?

A hoops national championship would be tremendous. I can't wrap my head around it being the other way unless you don't care about basketball.

and i would love for us to win a NC in basketball. Unless that loss comes during a 20 year period where thats our only loss against Ohio then i will take that 1 football game though. Why you might ask? because that isnt just a single regular season game to us.

I think that's more of a heart over mind thing. Your heart says that beating Michigan is fb is the most important thing in the world, but your mind says that winning a championship is way better.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:23 PM ^
Ohio fans have a mind. I find this rather interesting since they understand very little.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:20 PM ^
Definitely a Basketball NC for Michigan fans. OSU fans care very little about basketball, and Michigan has a surprisingly strong basketball fanbase for how poorly the team has performed over the past decade.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:52 PM ^
OSU fans are just pissed because they haven't won in 824 days.

Is there a counter somewhere?
February 23rd, 2012 at 5:57 PM ^
Not quite sure that Michigan is quite as "talentless" as he contends, but I agree with the general principle of his argument.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:03 PM ^
Least talented champ is not the same thing as talentless. You have to admit that there weren't a lot of people calling this a top ten basketball team at the beginning of the year. Plus, he is an Ohio guy. It can't be all praise with no jabs.

We play seven guys (fouls not withstanding), one of whom is the grittiest gritterson who ever gritted, one is basically his less gritty understudy, one is a 6'8"/6'9" center who gets by on outworking the hell out of everyone, one is an awkward gawky tall dude who can shoot (sometimes), one is a great defender who until this year could not create his own shot to save his life, and the last two are Tim Hardaway and Trey Burke, one of whom is mired in a season long slump, both of whom were late blooming three stars without really any major offers besides us, IIRC.
That we're 21-7 (11-4) doesn't really make sense to me other than that we play excellent team defense and have an outstanding point guard. I basically look at us as if we're Wisconsin.

especially next year i want a win over Urban at the Shoe over a basketball NC. Now this wouldnt be my pick every year just like 9 out of any 10 years.
February 23rd, 2012 at 5:59 PM ^
the fact that the question was even asked on that website should tell you all you need to know about that fanbase.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
If you look up, it was asked on this website, as well.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:04 PM ^
I think for me it's situational as well. Ohio is convinced that Urban Meyer is the next coming of Jesus Christ. To go down there next year and beat them would be a very special win even within the normal context of the rivalry. Brady Hoke would be 2-0 against them, the rumblings among the Ohio State fanbase would start (regardless of how the rest of the season went for them)... wonderful.
Also I just plain like football more than basketball, with hockey in between... so of course that influences my thought process too.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:10 PM ^
... but I can't fathom logically saying 1 single regular season game that has no national title or BCS implication (assumption), is bigger than an NCAA hoops championship.
February 23rd, 2012 at 6:11 PM ^
As much as I dislike loosing to them in FB...we play that game every year and in the future may actually play them twice in the same season...and, FB players have four years to secure 1 to 4+ wins. I know, it hasn't been easy over the last few years but we are all hokeful that THAT is about to change.
A basketball championship is a much more difficult goal to attain...(just ask MSU...they have made it to several final fours in the last few years and come away without the big prize).
Also...you can look at it this way...it seems a bit selfish to choose the FB win over the opportunity for the BB team to hang a banner from the rafters. Not many people remember specific wins against Ohio unless they are the '69 game or the year we foil their perfect season and they don't get to go to the MNC. EVERYONE remembers Final Four champs.

That Titus will do football rankings in the fall and they will affect the BCS formula.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:11 PM ^
this nevermind the more I thought about it I was just out of my league and this was very dumb. Crazy is right sorry.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:16 PM ^
Until Football championships actually matter, I'm content winning b10 and rose bowl titles (hypothetically) w/o NCs. Especially if it means we get another season of watching UM bball and hockey win. It think its worth it to have 2 solid teams even if we aren't winning multiple NCs.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:21 AM ^
might be the most outrageous thing ever posted on the internet, sir.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:06 PM ^
crazy....
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:11 PM ^
No doubt, give me the national championship. The chances you get for a national championship are few a far between especially in basketball. There's actually a playoff system where you have to beat at least 4 good teams. Your chances of getting there and winning are not good.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:25 PM ^
asking me which of my kids I love more.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:41 PM ^
But I'm not choosing, quite simply, I will take both as victories. I ain't conceding shit to ohio.
I want beat ohio and win the NCAA's, I'm greedy like that. There is no this or that, it's all or nothing.
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:16 PM ^
During the Fall, and see what the answers are. Even in a year like this past season, let alone a season like 2006 (yes it's different now with a CG), I feel answers might be different; the timing of this question matters! I find it hard to imagine I'd say, "I'm totally fine having Michigan lose to Ohio Saturday as long as the basketball team, not only makes the Final Four trip, but wins the entire thing come Spring time".
Now I understand what everyone is saying, right now I might say a basketball Championship, but man beating Ohio in football is aweeeeesommeeeee.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:21 AM ^
Good read but it is absolutely outrageous for him to say Aaron Craft is/was ever a potential first round draft pick. It should be obvious to anyone who has followed the NBA over the past 20 years that it would have been a miracle for Craft to develop into a first round talent.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:11 AM ^
I'd rather the football team go 1-11, the basketball team doesn't make the NIT, but we win The Game.
Every single time.
