M is All-Time Leader in FF/FF Doubles

Submitted by M Ascending on

We all heard yesterday that Michigan is the first team to make it to both the Final Four and Frozen Four in the same season since MSU did it in 2001 -- and that MSU had also done it in 1999.  Well, that article must have been posted by a Sparty troll.  The FF/FF same year double has now been accomplished SIX times  -- and Michigan has FOUR of them!!!

1964 MICHIGAN  --  Final Four:  Lost in semi-final to Duke 91-80 and beat K State 100-90                                    in the 3rd place game;

Frozen Four:  Won National Championship beating Denver 6-3

1992 MICHIGAN --   Final Four:  Lost in championship game to Duke (ugh, not again!) 71-                                    51

Frozen Four:  Lost in semifinal to Wisconsin 4-2

1993 MICHIGAN --   Final Four:  Lost in Championship game to North Carolina 77-71

Frozen Four:  Lost in semifinal to Maine 4-3 (OT)

1999 Staee --            Final Four:  Who cares?

                                  Frozen Four: Who cares?

2001 Staee --            Final Four:  Who cares?

                                  Frozen Four:  Who cares?

2018 MICHIGAN --   Final Four:  Won national championship beating Villanova 75-72

Frozen Four:  Won national championship, beating OSU 3-2 (OT)

So, yes, we are the Leaders and Best in all-time Final Four/Fozen Four doubles;.  And, as you can see from the records above, we are about to win two more national championships.

I mean this is great and I'm happy but like Hockey just isn't played by enough school for this to be that impressive.

Making the semis in basketball and hockey is not as impressive as it is for other sports, or say, women's basketball or football, for several reasons.

First, it's pretty arbitrary to choose basketball and hockey - they don't have anything to do with the other.  You could probably say the same thing about Iowa and wrestling, but who really cares?  Michigan is tied for most frozen fours of anyone, so this statistic really shouldn't be surprising - much like if I told you Iowa had the most concurrent Wrestling + Basketball B1G Championships or Duke had the most Lacross + Basketball Champtionships in the same year, you wouldn't be surprised, you'd expect that to be true.

Second, 60 teams compete in D1 hockey, so almost 7% of teams make the final four, while in men's basketball just over 1% of teams make the final four.  Further, how many teams are even capable of pulling this off?  Of the sixty hockey teams that exist, most won't ever threaten to make the final four.  Denver, Alabama-Hunstville, and Colorado College.  That's who your competing with - a bunch of schools who don't play D-1 basketball, Wisconsin, Minnesota, MSU, and Notre Dame (plus a few others but basically that's it).

Users on this site apparently have easily wounded pride.  We've got two teams in their respective semifinals, let's enjoy that for what it is.  What additional joy is gained by arbitrary bragging?

It's only happened six times ever.

The fact only two schools have ever accomplished this is a more interesting discussion. There are only a handful of schools with the focus on both programs to make this even a realistic possibility.

Michigan & MSU of course.

Wisconsin has exceled in both, just not at the same time.

OSU is now starting to excel in hockey and has been good in basketball.

ND has the resources to put together teams which can make a run in both, but it would require a "special" type of season in basketball.

BC at one time had a good basketball program, just not elite enough to reach final four status. I don't see that improving any time soon.

Minnesota has had okay to good basketball teams, they just can't get to that nationally elite level.

PSU and ASU are other programs which could potentially do it someday, but that is not in the immediate future.

I don't really see many other schools being able to pull it off other than a hockey school having a freak run in basketball similar to Loyola Chicago.

That loss to Maine still stings.  That Maine team was historically good. but M had them down two goals early.  We surrendered the tying goal late in the third period, before losing in OT.

I was there...took my father, brother and younger cousin to the game...it was in Providence...we were sitting next to the band...we all had headaches after the game...that would not have been so bad if we had won...was also at the BB games in MN (lost to Duke) and in New Orleans (lost to NC)...UGH...
