My guess is he is definitely on the plane and doing everything with the team except the actual game itself.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
Can he be on the field for pre-game warmups? I assume no.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
I doubt it. If he was allowed to, he would’ve been there for the warm-ups at State College last week.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:06 AM ^
No. He is not allowed at the venue prior to or during the game.
November 17th, 2023 at 2:10 PM ^
What about right after the game?
Like right after the final whistle blows, he is rushed in through the tunnel and on to the field.
Gives the TV interview, celebrates with the players, goes over to the student section to sing Hail to the Victors, then goes into the locker room to sing (be sung to) For He's a Jolly Good Fellow!
Get his licks in.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
According to the punishment, I think the wording was that he's not allowed in the venue, so I would think not.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
So, you're saying he can coach from the Goodyear Blimp? Folding makes perfect sense now. ;)
November 17th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
From the perspective of a former four year low level college player, I think you want one person in charge on gameday. Players need to know who is leading them and who to look to, and having that change in the middle of a gameday isn't great. For Michigan this week that's Coach Moore. There's normally a Friday night speech after the walkthrough practice or at the team hotel. If I was Harbaugh I'd fly there with the team and give that speech, but then turn it over to Moore and go off separately until after the game.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
If I were Harbaugh, I would skip the Maryland game and go watch the Ohio State game in person.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
If he stayed home to work on the OSU game plan, I am down with that.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:55 AM ^
He should stay back and watch OSU film.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
I think he should go to the OSU vs. Minnesota game and sit on the 50 yard line with his IPhone out.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
Technically he can if he doesn't pull out his phone, right?
November 17th, 2023 at 10:40 AM ^
No, he cannot. I don't understand how we're a month into this thing, and these very basic principles are not commonly understood by our fanbase (or others).
C'mon, man. In person scouting of a future opponent. Those words have been repeated many, many times here and elsewhere. It isn't allowed, and is the crux of our current predicament.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:59 AM ^
But there is a recording aspect to that, so what if it was a fake phone? An obviously fake phone. A giant phone.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:11 AM ^
No, there is not.
People are conflating the gameday recording prohibition with the NCAA bylaw on advance in-person scouting. These are two distinct things.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:19 AM ^
It’s also why the predicament is so stupid to begin with. 100,000 people can be at the game, televised to millions, but if a coach is in the crowd the world stops spinning.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:48 AM ^
Not this week but I could see him entering the stadium thru the Lloyd Carr tunnel after the final whistle next week when UM beats OSU
November 17th, 2023 at 9:30 PM ^
Spotting scope, otherwise, I agree:
November 17th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
Is it against the rules to have him in row 1, 50 yard line, behind our bench for the OSU game?
November 17th, 2023 at 10:36 AM ^
Considering he's not allowed in the stadium, I'd say sitting behind the bench may not work.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:11 AM ^
Ah, for some reason I thought he wasn't allowed on the sideline.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
There was nothing saying he can’t travel with the team. Just can’t be at the game.
My guess is he goes with them and tries to keep it all “business as usual” as much as he possibly can.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
He will be with the team as much and as long as possible. No doubt he will be on the plane.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:58 AM ^
Chances are 50/50, either he will or he won't.
He certainly can, but he may choose not to.
You can have Coke or Pepsi.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:03 AM ^
this is the correct response.
not to say that it doesn't matter - it does, certainly, at least to the actual team - but it's kinda weird to have what appears to be a rooting interest either way.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:53 AM ^
If you really think the chances are 50/50 whether Harbaugh chooses to spend as much time as possible with the team or stay at home, you don’t know anything about him.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:24 AM ^
I have to speak up and voice my outrage at your post. As if the choice between Coke and Pepsi is a casual one!
November 17th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
Re: insiders this reminds me of when almost every political observer I followed at the time was wrong about the 2016 election.
I do want to give credit to Sam though. Of all of the insiders, he's the one that never got out over his skis.
I think Harbaugh will fly with the team and spend the day with his brother.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:11 AM ^
Every time I hear someone call themselves an insider I just assume they believe they are more connected than they actually are.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:00 AM ^
Webb and JUB seem to be the only ones who I consider trustworthy anymore. Makes sense since theyre both long time guys with pretty deep UofM connections who don't have subscriptions to sell per se
Balas dooms constantly
Hole & Henschke got over their skiis with the empire strikes back stuff
November 17th, 2023 at 11:04 AM ^
JUB has consistently stated "nobody knows anything", and it's what I am clinging to even now.
November 17th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
My question is will he be allowed on the field for senior day against OSU? It would really suck if he couldn't be there for them.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
His suspension stipulates he is not allowed at the venue on game day, so unfortunately he will not be able to participate in traditional Senior Day festivities.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:36 AM ^
A couple of hyper-technical questions.
- Is "Game Day" defined? For example, does it refer to the 24 hours commencing at 12:00:01 on 11/18? Could it end when the game clock strikes zero? It would be great if he could celebrate with the team immediately after win #1,000.
- Is "Venue" defined. For example, could he be on the Maryland campus?
[EDIT] The terms are not defined. The applicable part of the letter reads "For clarity, the Head Football Coach shall not be present (emphasis added) at the game venue on the dates of the games to which this disciplinary action applies". I guess if they were going to push the envelope, it could be around the definition of "present". Do calls, texts constitute pressence?
November 17th, 2023 at 11:17 AM ^
It's pretty clear that "present" means physical presence in this instance. Harbaugh cannot be physically present at the venue the entire day in which the game is contested.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:01 AM ^
Pretty shitty thing to do honestly. Jim can't be there for senior day because a staffer may have committed violations? The Big Ten should give a waiver for that at minimum. The teams gotta be pissed about that
November 17th, 2023 at 10:05 AM ^
Jim needs to be there to tuck in each player, give him their cookie/milk/steak snack for the night, and give them all a soft kiss on the forehead.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
Because his BROTHER lives less than an hour from the game site, and b/c Jim is allowed to coach the team until the team leaves the hotel for the stadium on Saturday morning, I'd fully expect Jim to be there coaching up the team until the last moment. And to watch the game with John somewhere....
... unless John is on the sidelines with us during the game... maybe or maybe not with a headset on... that's a whole other "inquiring minds wanna know" issue.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
I've been wondering this.
In theory, since the Ravens played Thursday and John is done for the week, could we have put him on the sideline as a fill-in?
Please know, I am not advocating this.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:37 AM ^
It's an interesting idea, but I think they want to have the coaching stuff around this game go exactly like it will next week for OSU. Any one not involved next week shouldn't be involved this week.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
I would think he's on the plane and wherever the team meets prior to OSU he'll be there too. I imagine he'll be close by in Ann Arbor for the post-game festivities, should there be any.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
I would think taking the team temp and last minute motivating and support for Coach Moore would be more helpful and then finding the best TV available for watching. He may still avoid the wings due to his respect as kindred spirits.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
Given the only restriction of his suspension is that he not go to the game venue on game day, I'd imagine he'll be with the team up to the moment they depart the hotel for the stadium, this week and next. as he should.
GO BLUE
November 17th, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
I continue to wonder if he can call/text the team/coaches during the game. We know he face timed the team after the game. Maybe Harbaugh texted Sherrone at halftime and said mammoth package. Run the damn ball.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
is it the venue or the sideline?
November 17th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
Can you imagine if Jim just bought a ticket to The Game and sat in the stands like one of us? Just before kickoff they turn the stadium cameras on him and his whole family cheering the boys on and the stadium loses their minds?
That would be one of the all-time master troll jobs in the history of sports.
November 17th, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
I'm sure there are season ticket holders who can give up their first-row seats behind the bench for a game.
November 17th, 2023 at 11:15 AM ^
That would also violate the suspension agreement with the Big Ten.
