'12 Michigan State Football Debate/Discussion/Rant

Submitted by Space Coyote on

I’m going to come right out and say it: I think Michigan will beat MSU next year.  Big surprise, I’m a Michigan fan that thinks Michigan will win.  I think it’s a fair assumption, I think Michigan has a better team.  I by no means think it’s a lock like many others seem to be desperately trying to convince themselves.  Here’s what we are looking at for Michigan State.

Key Offensive Losses: Cousins, Cunningham, Martin, Linthicum, Nichol, Baker, Foreman.

Cousins and Cunningham are the two biggest loses. Foreman, who was State’s best lineman on a terrible line, was overrated.  He’ll get replaced, some of MSU’s injured players will come back, and the line will probably be only marginally better than last year.  Baker isn’t much of a lose, Bell is a better back anyway and they have some depth with Caper there.  Linthicum could hurt them a bit, but if Sims lives up to any of his ability or one of their other TEs continue to show like they did last year it won’t be too bad.  Martin was hit or miss, he had speed but pretty crappy hands, and is probably someone who can be replaced.  Cunningham can’t immediately.  But WR depth isn’t terrible, though it is young.  Maxwell isn’t a bad QB and will probably step right in and be middle of the pack Big Ten.  He has a pretty strong arm and is pretty accurate, has potential, and State will run the ball enough to give him some help.

Defensive: Worthy, Robinson, Depth players

Like it or not, and probably a function of playing in a relatively weak offensive conference (this also helped Michigan to a certain degree), but MSU’s defense was pretty good last year.  Tommy G, while a dirty player, is pretty damn good.  Their D-line has some depth, and while losing Worthy really hurts, they also lose his at least one off-sides a game move.  They will still have a good D-line, as they have the required depth at this position.  As most people agree, it starts upfront, and they are solid here, probably about the same as last year.  The LBs they will be better than last year, they lose no one.  DBs are their weakness, and they lose some leadership but get some pretty good players back.  This is the area where they lack depth though and could get exposed it injuries happen.

Overall, I think their defense hit their peak last year.  They can be a top 10 D but until they bring in more consistent talent they won’t go much higher than that.  They have some limitations athletically that make it so other schools can and will be ahead of them, but at least for next year they should be solid.

So that sums up what I have to say about State.  Most people will disagree I’m guessing, fine, and some will have valid points.  I’m by no means saying they are world beaters.  I’m guessing they will be a top 25 team next year though, hovering around 20-30 for the most part.  I think Michigan will beat them but that it will be a very competitive game.  That’s my rant and essay/thesis all rolled into one, but what you say?

is that their home-field advantage, augmented by their home-field officiating was the difference between what proved to be, over the course of the whole season, two quite evenly matched teams. That will not be the case this time.

but a 3rd down bad spot and a missed backward pass call accounted for the whole point difference (my humble home-field opinion, as I qualified it), combined with tolerence for 60 minutes of unnecessary roughness (after the whistles) made for an unusual situation. I still think we can expect a different atmosphere at home. If we were not perfectly matched that day, we were over the whole season (and I am thinking mostly of our Nebraska games.) Most poll voters seemed to agree with me on that.

And if that is not a good enough excuse, I'll go back to blaming the weather.

So, what you're saying is, head to head doesn't matter because of MSU's home field advantage, and the Nebraska games are the only ones that count even though one was at home and the other was at Nebraska? Not to mention the complete omission of the Iowa games, which were both played at Iowa in similar situations with rather different results.

Face it, MSU was better. Complaining about being physically manhandled comes off a little sour when Taylor Lewan takes cheap shots every other play anyway.

Offensively I think Sparty takes a step back because of obvious losses.  (3 year captain QB, top 3 WR including kick return nightmare, top TE, top OL)

Defensively I think they remain solid. It will be interesting to see how much of an impact Ghoulston, Rush, and Bullough can be without Worthy demanding double teams inside.

Kicking; do they lose dan conroy?  sparty always seems to have good place kickers and it's a mystery to me.

I think they have a favorable non conference schedule with the only "road" game being the short trip up 127 to CMU.  Home games against a reloading Boise St, not quite there yet EMU, and Kelly led ND should all have the spartans as favorites.

In conference they have a tough 3 game stretch of @UM, vs Ohio, @UW.

I see them as 8-10 wins next year depending on how they do against us, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.

Should be a great game in October and with the spartans only having one week to prepare I see us winning by 4-10 points.

DB's are not the weak spot for MSU's defense. They have Johnny Adams coming back as a senior, and Isaiah Lewis coming back for his Junior year. I agree that linebacker is probably their biggest strength along with DE, with Rush and Gholston, and Linebacker corps that has Bullough and Allen who were great this year. Redshirt freshman and best player in the state in 2011 Lawrence Thomas should get some time in at LB also.

The O-Line should be MUCH better, as they were later in the season. they didnt give up a sack after the Nebraska game (just compare the awful ND game where most of lineman were playing their first game to Wisconsin Pt 2).

Kicking should be good as Sadler the punter was only a freshman, and i think Conroy will be a Senior.

Obviously the passing game is the biggest question mark. All reports from practices say athletically and skill-wise Maxwell is a better QB than cousins, hopefully the leadership is there by August 31st. The receivers are all unproven. We have a lot of depth but the only one with game experience is Bennie Fowler, who was injured all of last year and had some good showings a couple years ago, and DeAnthony Arnett. There are also Caesar, Mumphrey and Lippett who have been in the system, and Kings who enrolled early. The rest are all freshman who i dont think see the field besides Aaron Burbridge.

and with that, i go back to RCMB, cant wait till August 31st. Good luck in Dallas.

Flock to every UM site or blog created. Well I guess not. This is Michigan and envy will always be rampant. Makes me feel great.
