That's my alma.
are being closed and locked down left and right this week. It's really bad.
kept most of his friends from attending. The school limited the number of entrances/exits to the school to one, for easier protection. Shitty times we're living in.
There is no upside to the madness except maybe it won’t die slowly in the media this time as it did after Vegas, Sandy Hook, et al.
It’s a sign our society is not well and that gun control is only one piece of addressing the social cancers of violence, depression and alienation.
Sam Webb had a segment shortly after the last shooting about how people are resistant to putting metal detectors in our schools because they don’t want to expose our children to the daily mentality of shootings in our schools.
It’s already there people. Active shooting drills occur regularly in our schools — my wife teaches 2d grade. Kids are aware and they are afraid.
At the secondary level, anyway, I wouldn't say that kids are afraid. They've been doing lockdown drills their entire school life. They are, however, increasingly angry about all this, though...
My third grader is afraid because her teacher told the class she would be afraid if she were a kid today. Thanks for that nugget of wisdom. I'm just glad my daughter talked to me about it so I can talk her through the issue.
Why in the world would a third grade teacher be discussing this topic with her students? Leave that to the parents to decide. Kids under 10 shouldn't even be in the room when the news is on tv. IMO.
They were doing some kind of active shooter drill, which is fine (would have been nice to be notified, but whatever). My problem is with the teacher sharing her fears with the students. I agree about the news. We don't have TV or internet in the house, so I don't have to worry about that!
they start doing shooter drills in pre-school now. That's fairly typical and is not an indictment of the teacher. Especially coming from a generation that struggles to have tough conversations.
1. Lock doors, hide and be quiet;
2. If shooter busts in, run if possible, but if not, teacher makes the call for kids to run in circles, randomly, throw things at the shooter under the theory that if it takes more time in that room, even if it’s 10-20 more seconds, it’ll give other kids in other parts of the school 10-20 more seconds to flee, saving collective lives.
Read that second option again. We are teaching SECOND graders to give their lives in a slow down defense of others.
This is maybe the saddest and most disturbing thing I can imagine. It’s way past time for a new, concerted, persistent, broader approach.
CNN reporting suspect still at large. However, i have family associated with local law enforcement that tells me the suspect fled on foot, but was apprehended in a city park about 30 mins ago.
Let's hope that information is accurate and just has not trickled down yet.
Turns out that the suspect is still at large. My family member was incorrectly informed.
I'll let it go.
RIP to my fellow Chips.
Fellow downvoters don't worry, I know you voted on my prior sentence and not my current edit.
He shot and killed his parents when they came to pick him up for spring break
I teach at CMU and we're all currently still on lockdown. I'm sitting in my office feeling impotently angry about the situation and praying that none of my students were involved. Hold your loved ones close and contact your political representitives about comprehensive firearms control...
because that really gets to the core of the problem. If our teachers have to be armed our country is officially broken beyond repair. Not a good suggestion to succomb to, at all.
you guys. Stop the political bullshit! Wrong forum, not to mention wrong time. Christ...
but if somebody makes a stupid comment that could bear relevance to public opinion regarding a societal issue of personal importance, I am going to say something. He didn't have to say what he said. Don't put my response in the same basket as his initial comment. That is a false-equivalence.
is a sports blog. Use your downvote. Nobody gives a shit about your political opinion, and you are not going to change anyone's mind on gun control here...
that it is a sports-blog, and I don't care if nobody cares about my opinion, but the days of letting stupid comments involving important issues go unchecked are over.
is a "don't start nothing-won't be nothing" situation. I never engage in political discussions anywhere until and unless somebody says something to which silence equates to tacit approval as to an issue of true societal importance.
equate to tacit approval. See all those negs in the upper left corner?
ijohn gets her feelings hurt pretty easily.
Are you using the female pronoun as an insult? That is odd.
On that note, popping open a Keystone Light and getting ready for some hoops!
....and that is something that most can agree on.
Beer? Yes.
Keystone.... not so much lol
Yup, which is why I just negged everyone making any political comment for either side.
There are probably people reading this post while locked down at CMU. And some information has been shared that isn't/wasn't in the media at the time and could be useful/relieving to them to see.
So good job bringing up politics Rooster Cogblue, you're the one that'll end up getting this thread locked.
I withdraw my response to your comment. No, the idea isn't a joke. It is a terrible, no good idea that is actually gaining traction.
The core of the problem is we think we should be in control of our lives and we really aren't. People react differently when this fact becomes apparent in their life. Some people want to buy guns for protection, some want to ban them for a sense of security, and some want to use them to try and solve their frustration.
My wife teaches at a Title I school, and several of her students are in various stages of bipolar disorder. Their families largely can't afford the medication required to properly help their children, so she never knows what side of her students she's going to get when they walk into her classroom every morning.
That's a fucking awful idea. All it takes is the kid finding out where the gun is located, and him walking into the classroom on one bad day.
I mean, I hope this post is not considered political, but I would have to assume that in any case of teachers being armed in the classroom, the gun would be locked and secured, not just hidden away for some kid to find. Pretending that it would not be secured is plainly and clearly silly.
True. I never assumed they'd be out in plain sight. I just don't think it's worth the risk, and it also sends the wrong message to students when they go to school and know their teacher has a gun in her desk and she could kill them if she really wanted to. That's a highly extreme thought process, but a child thinks differently than an adult. Not all schools are also going to be able to afford good lock boxes for their teachers to put their guns in. My wife's school doesn't even have money to provide its students with basic school supplies, much less lock boxes for gun storage.
Also, what happens if the teacher accidentally shoots one of her students while trying to protect them? What if she accidentally shoots herself and one of the kids picks up the gun and tries to play hero, risking the lives of every other student in the room? What if a kid finds a way to break into the lock box? Can't tell me that can't happen because it can. Some teachers honestly just won't want that kind of responsibility, and I don't blame them.
I dont disagree with any of your other points. They are all valid to varying degrees, and this is not the forum to discuss their merits or lack thereof. Just meant to point out the absurdity of the idea that a kid could have a bad day, and decide to just walk into class and grab teacher's gun.
On person concealed carry with a retention holster. Accessible for when the teacher needs it and virtually impossible for anyone else to get their hands on it.
