Great article on exactly how I feel right now

Submitted by Mr. Elbel on

I know the attitude from this board isn't normally a good one in reference to Nick, but he came out with a pretty good piece this morning on mlive. It pretty much perfectly describes my feelings right now in the wake of Monday's result, despite not at all agreeing with Harbaugh on rooting for the B1G.

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2015/01/column_ohio_states_at…;

Some highlights:

"Harbaugh doesn't need any more inspirational tactics, the guy basically dreams in motivational speeches. But for good measure, he just got one. As the Harbaugh era begins in Ann Arbor, Michigan's biggest enemy is now the top force in the game.

Maybe Harbaugh and new strength coach Kevin Tolbert add a few more bench reps to the conditioning list after Monday's result. Maybe a few more wind sprints. Add another plate on that squat rack.

"You want to be like those guys? Then get to work.""

..."So here it is. Ohio State has the makings of a college football machine at the moment. Michigan State is going through a nearly unprecedented run of success.

The trek toward the top of the mountain, for Michigan, is a long one.

But the Wolverines also have a football coach who still wears cleats.

Let the climbing begin."

Let's do this. 317 days. Go Blue.

I don't think true tOSU fans have forgotten... the fringe dregs yes.

So even though Michigan has the better head to head record, tOSU does have more championships than Michigan.  The people on this board have only seen 1 and that was shared.  So yes, nationally, tOSU is the measuring stick.

Yeah, I read this article and felt the same way. No way would Harbaugh be intimidated by OSU right now; there is no doubt that he is one of the five or ten best coaches in football at any level. Just look at his record and the coaching tree for evidence. When you look at the staff he's put together there is no room for anything but optimism--Harbaugh is a great football mind who surrounds himself with the same. We will win, and we'll do it quickly.

If we can solve the QB problem this fall, we could have an exceptional team.  We lose very little, bring back our entire OL, add Ty Isaac to our backfield, have most of our D back and have terrific coaches.  We played OSU tighter than Oregon did, so even though we have a long way to go, it is not an insurmountable challenge to get there.

As to the criticism of Baumgartner, people ought to cut him some slack.  He is not writing for the fanatics on this site; he is writing for the average fan and doing a pretty good job.  And, I agree that we have not been competitive for a long time in spite of the fact that we did beat them the one year that Luke Fickel was the coach and came close in 2013.  They have been better than us for all of the past 7 years except for the one year OSU was coached by Fickel.  We need to change that and, with JH as coach, will get it done!

Solid read. Normally the stress level of watching OSU in a big game like that, and hoping for a loss, is at an unhealthy level. On Monday I turned the tv off in the 3rd quarter and went to bed completely indifferent. Knowing we have JH to guide us through the next number of years has wiped away all of that angst. Gone are the days where all I had was to root against OSU or MSU in big games. HARBAUGH.

I never got what Mlive gets so much flack on this site.  In recent years, they seem to focus articles on about current players on the team and they're usually pretty positive.  While there's a ton of sites out there that focus on the recruiting factor, Mlive puts out articles on the current players.

Until we kick the "This is Michigan" shit that Hoke started, which has yielded a ton of entitlement and players focusing more on using their degrees after college as opposed to getting better at football, we're going to struggle. By all means, use that degree, but don't view it as a fall back if / when football doesnt work out.

I bet Sparty / OSU has way more of the Cuban baseball player "I sure a shit better hit my way off of the island" mentality, which gives them some tough grinders that turn into football manbeasts after 2-3 years.

Hopefully Harbaugh can infuse that Stanford mentality of "you might as well kick ass while you're here even if you are going to go work in biz dev at facebook in 2 years."

That's just taking the pendulum from one extreme and swinging it to the other extreme. There isn't a thing wrong with "this is Michigan" or the term "Michigan (Wo)Man". The problem is when they are taken out of context. Nothing wrong with "this is Michigan"... look at this quote from Yost for example:
But do let me reiterate the Spirit of Michigan. It is based on a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways. An enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan Men to spread the gospel of their university to the world’s distant outposts. And a conviction that nowhere, is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours.
Give me chills... Is Yost a "Michigan Man"? Not originally; came from West Virginia. "Michigan Man" was never meant to mean you had to be of the school only -- it's more about the values. Heck, Bo wasn't one to start either. Bo went to that school down south for Pete's sake! Michigan man never should have been an excuse to become inbred or complacent. So instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water, let's use the terms in their proper context/meaning, be proud of them, and correct where necessary!

I agree in a way.  There's nothing wrong with someone having immense pride in their University. But I think if you talk about the history of it, players start to think theyre great before they do anything great (except for having Mike Farrell love them). Cool, you go to the college with the most all time wins.  That means nothing for 2015 except that we have the potential to be embarrassed on national tv more often.

Eitther way, Yost was speaking over 100 years ago when there was no professional football and the only people who went to college were rich white kids who were going to be very successful by default since an absurdly low amount of people went to any college, let alone Michigan.

Now you have a much different socioeconomic group of kids playing with this monstrous NFL carrot hanging out there.  The carrot is less apt to motivate players if they have these false visions of themselves being the next Gerald Ford b/c their cool Uncle Hoke has been reading them bedtime stories about him.

People have a entitlement attitude presently because Michigan is soft right now. That's the #1 thing I'm excited about with the Harbaugh hire and moving forward.

JH is gonna make the kids compete in everything!

They're not gonna whine about Gholston twisting a helmet... they're gonna line up and shove the fucking ball right down Sparty's fucking throat.

They're not going to let Cockran come through the O line and put his helmet on Morris' chin and then 2 guys peel Morris off the turf while the rest of the team stands around with their thumbs up their asses.

"One can only imagine what Michigan fan reaction would be this week if the Wolverines were preparing to enter 2015 with a plan B or C coach in charge of the program, while Ohio State celebrated a national championship. Take the worst cut you've ever suffered, and stick it in the Dead Sea for an hour."
