It will affect them. And this will sound harsh, but so what? I am not being antagonistic, but how fair is it to not pay the individuals who generate the revenue to support ALL the other sports.
I love sports. The quality of some of the nonrevenue sports might diminish. An assistant athletic director or two might end up job hunting. There still will still be sports. And we will still root for Michigan.
I tried, unsuccessfully to get our Band and UM stadium scoreboard to play Duke Ellington's Take the A-train when Anthony Thomas became our all-time rushing leader. I tried for about a year and I had good connections, to no avail.
The reason given was some cockamamy excuse that UM does not glorify single-player achievements.
"The NCAA was trying to maintain something that benefited the fans (and, by the way, the non-revenue-producing sports), at the expense of the athletes in the revenue-producing sports. Maybe that wasn't fair, and maybe that wasn't, at the end of the day, the "just" thing to do. "
The NCAA was trying to maintain something that benefitted the NCAA and the schools. The fans were a secondary consideration. And you succinctly stated the unfairness of the system. In my opinion, there is no maybe.
I'm old. I don't want the hassle of leaving wifi cable (Comcast). I know I will cut from cable one day.
On regular cable, I get all Detroit teams, BTN (not BTN+); USA, TNT, ESPN2 (no ESPNU or ESPN3).
For sports, I supplement cable offerings with a firestick for ESPN+ & Paramount+ (mostly soccer) & Amazon Prime for a little football.
For non-Sports, we have Amazon Prime/Disney+/Netflix/MHZ. Periodically we have HBO & Showtime when there are deals.
All in, I'm around $220 a month
I know I will cut the chord one day. What platform do you recommend to serve as the streaming(?) backbone? FireTV works for me, but my kids are not impressed......
If this sounds naive.....duh.....I have kids and grandkids to tell me that.....
My guess is that TV will demand these permanent games
M will get OSU & USC + if M gets MSU as its 3rd then we will have the hardest regular schedule. so bet on this one.
and
OSU will get M & PSU + who knows? (Illinois?) ( rotating ucla-usc home/away on a 4 yr cycle would give osu a west coast game every year, I think)
and
USC will get UCLA & M + who knows? (Nebraska?) (can psu home/away be synched with the ucla-usc synch for osu mentioned above?)
and
PSU will get OSU & Maryland + maybe msu
NOTES on main rivals:
There are 3 glamour teams that drive TV schedules: M, OSU, USC. PSU is glamorous to a slightly lesser degree.
it's likely M gets osu-usc because osu will likely get um, psu. osu will not get usc, um & psu---although it is alright with me--so um gets usc by default.
as a result, M must avoid playing osu-usc-msu as fixed. that is a very unfair schedule for M.
psu & osu will be scheduled to get to the west coast once a year. can the home-away schedules of these 4 schools (osu/psu/usc/ucla) be synched to allow this? and if it can, then it means that neither osu nor psu can have ucla or usc as fixed games---i think ( I don't want to do the permutations)
The NCAA b-ball tournament sells itself. It sure as heck doesn't need the NCAA to run it. Add b-ball to football---the two that generate the dough-- and I might agree.
let me add my voice to the large group who believe Michigan should untether from an every year game with MSU. Once every other year under the 16 team schedule is more than enough.
a few comments from another M blog on this subject (with slight amends)
"Who in their right mind would take zero guaranteed over millions guaranteed, right now?"
"If M were true "Leaders", they would call out the hypocrisy of guidelines that will not be enforced and fellow conference members clearly will not follow. This might be a public relations win for M with athlete-students.
M should call out the hypocrisy through action. Force the issue. Instead, we read Wangler disparage inducements to recruits-see: "massive amounts paid to athletes who have not played a down". That would not make me want to attend M if I were an athlete-student. What do you think most recruits think when the transformational pitch is made? I think most think this, If it's ok to sponsor me when I get there, why isn't it ok to sponsor me now? "
This leads to deciding "if coming to UM would eventually be worth more than the other place - except then the rational thing to do is go to Other Place and possibly transfer to UM a year or two later with a proven track record. Oh, yeah, except we don't take those kinds of transfers."
it's sadly humorous to watch the contortions of so-called traditionalists discuss how many angels can dance on the head of the NIL pin. The fact is, the NCAA is a front to run sanctioned unfair labor practices for the business owners....err I mean universities. End the hypocrisy, openly pay the players.
Grant, Jalen, Glenn, Campy & McGee have multiple position flexibility
It's hard to leave Jamal Crawford, Mitch McGary, and Mo Wagner off this team. Jamal based on his NBA career & Mitch & Mo based on their final four runs. and what about Terry Mills or Bill Buntin? Jordan Poole might end up as one of the top handful of pros among M grads,,,,,,,
Final analysis: For sure Cazzie, Trey, Glenn & Chris are in based on their Final Four runs AND Rudy T, Glenn, Cazzie & Webber are in based on their Pro careers. Particularly Chris.
On a personal note, my favorite UM players listed here are Hubbard & Jalen. I have many other non UM greatest team players. including one that I played with in my youth, Wayman Britt---that is to say, I was on the court with him in pick-up games. I just tried to stay out of his way......

Absurd, but so pure reactionary Michigan.

it seems to me that once JH went to young dynamic guys in recruiting that M's recruiting took off like a rocket. why go backwards?

2021 - Haskins run and hurdle.
you heard of George Santos? He ran the naked reverse.

men's football & basketball. you know, where the SSS comes from.
The NCAA in its current form is obsolete. Reform it and set up a separate organization for CFB & CBB to share the revenue with players.

Interesting. Shows you what marketing can do.
Not bad. One minor change: I'd flip Ill/NW. NW is closer to the Indiana schools.
Me too. 4 five team divisions. Division winners play in semifinal, winners in championship.
PAC - USC, UCLA, Stanford, Washington, Oregon
West - Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois
Midwest - Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Ohio State
East - Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers.
Oregon doesn't have a large fan base. Stanford would be about academic standing.
flip msu & purdue

oh well, at least we have our aggressive undergrad transfer policies to shore up recruiting
some people just refuse to be transformed

Because there is no connection between recruiting and Big Ten Championships.

5. 2004 MSU (wedding groomsman)

1. 1969 OSU
The top game is a tie between 1969 ,1997, & 2021 OSU
NIL is simply a beard to pay players. Any rules for NIL are a sham used to justify the notion that the players are not being paid directly.
M will, of course, follow the meaningless NCAA rules scrupulously. Some schools will use NIL to pay players and circumvent the sham NCAA rules.
I fall emphatically on the side of paying the players out in the open.
