Winovich officially listed at TE on spring roster
This has been talked about before but I believe Winovich being listed at TE on the roster is a new development. It thins the LB depth but the staff is heavily recruiting LBs this cycle so maybe this will be a non-issue going forward.

not solely just a tight end? I guess I'm fine with this since there isn't much depth behind Butt and Bunting. There's also a chance Winovich plays on both sides too.

I guess there is a chance he still plays the H-back role.
There are no "H-back" positions on the roster. All of those types (Hill and Winovich) are listed as TE.

Based on practice reports it sounds like Shallman is getting his reps at RB.

Correct. He was an H-back at times for Hoke, but he has been getting snaps at RB for Harbaugh.

sure but it also said he was playing mostly in pass protectin and catching the ball, not getting carries. Call it whatever you want but it sounds like an H-Back to me.

What the hell do I know, but this seems like a bad idea to me. LB is incredibly thin next year, and if the thought is he can play this year at TE and then move back to LB, he's just lost a year of learning LB at the colledge level. Isn't Poggi enough at that H-back spot, along with returnees? I hope Winovich gets moved back in the Fall, or someone else gets moved to LB to replace him.

Staff believes they are in good position with some elite LB types who can contribute early - and said recruits are eyeing early PT as an incentive.
Have to see how it works out.

Those and more. Michigan is in on a lot of linebackers.
The current number is 14, but it will surely increase:

was supposed to have a unique skills mix for the LB position. I guess it reinforces the disbelief that Chris Clark did not end up here since there seems to be a lot of PT available for that position.

If Winovich and Harbaugh are cool with the move then I guess I am too. But as others have mentioned it does seem weird to take a 4* LB recruit out of that position especially when the depth will be very questionable soon.
Maybe creating opportunities for top LB recruits (2016 & 2017) to come in and compete for time immediately? *EDIT: Someone hinted at this above.

Wasn't he the best LB recruit in his class, a potential Jake Ryan SAM type? Would hate to lose something like that on D.

Ferns was the best recruit but he is gone. Winovich was definitely the highest ranked of the remaining three.

Didn't Harbaugh say that players could try out any position they wanted? He must've made heads turn as a TE.

Gedeon, Gant, McCray - backed up by Furbush and Wangler. And an aray of supposed star 2016 LB recruits who are not here yet.
That's your 2016 LB core. Outside of special teams or the 4th quarter vs a baby seal I dont think any of those guys has seen the field at LB other than Gedeon.
Boggled by this. You dont have to clear out the entire roster to land a good 2016 LB so they can get playing time. If 2016 dude doesnt wantto come to Michigan to compete with RS sophomores then why is dude playing football. And as someone said above, flipping a guy to TE for a year than back to LB is not useful for him to develop as a LB. 3 months ago I though the starting LB core for 2016 would be some combo of Gedeon, Ferns, McCray, and Winovich. That quickly half are bye bye.
Just strange considering the lack of depth and elite athleticism in most of the players set to return to LB next year. Gedeon will be the only guy with any real experience barring injuries this year.
The best way he can help the team right now is on offense. Harbaugh has had plenty of experience using two way players in the past. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to assessing Winovich's ability to move back to defense if needed.
Not boggling to me... Harbaugh wants football personalities playing...and Winovich totally has one, and perhaps showed it at TE during stress time... Good for him.

Hmm... Poggi still listed at DE.

This is very similar to how MSU used Riley Bullough( I apologize for the MSU reference). He was redshirted his first season, and then played fullback his first year on the field. After they graduated some guys, they moved him back to linebacker where he played quite a bit. Sometimes you just want to get your best football players on the field. It doesn't mean they are stuck at that position permanently.

Dude hasn't won a single game for us yet! Clearly overrated.
If he pulls stuff like this while playing TE we will all be saying how bad Hoke was to not see he was a TE lol...
