There is definitely a dropoff with DeJulius and Johns, especially on defense. But, it often seems like the refs are a lot harder on freshmen than upperclassmen. At least one of Johns' fouls looked to be a figment of the ref's imagination.

My good man, you are the son any mother would be proud of! With the keen sight of Stevie Wonder, the towering intellect of Maurice Clarett, and the Solomon-like judgment of Captain Edward Smith, you, sir, are the envy of every single one of the dozens of people who showed up to watch this embarrasment of a game, and the pinnacle of manliness and moral behavior in Happy Valley!

In Purdue's game at PSU, they were jobbed by the refs as well. They did manage to pull the game out in OT, but had that game been called equitably, they wouldn't have needed OT and would have won by double digits.

The zebras were very friendly to Iowa, but even with that, NU had a sizable lead late in the game. Then Iowa went to a full court press and created turnover after turnover (as well hitting a series of threes).

I was 16 years old, driving my 72 Caprice Classic home from the IMA auditorium in Flint with 2 or 3 friends in the car. It was snowy, and I was trying to show off, driving too fast. I took a street I was not familiar with that had a 90 degree turn. I slammed on the brakes, turned the wheel and was sliding straight ahead. I let off the brakes at the last minute and made it around the bend. My friends were screaming; I pretended I knew what I was doing all along. I learned a couple of important lessosns that night: slow the hell down when the roads are snow packed, and in those pre anti-lock brake days, slamming on the brakes on slick roads just insures that you will slide and have zero control of steering.

Not to mention that their loss at Northwestern last night was due in large part to a guy who has barely played because of injuries going off with 6 made 3 pointers. Now maybe he's just that good or IU couldn't guard him, but at this point it certainly seems like a fluke.
|01/17/2019 - 2:29pm||In addition to finding the…||
In addition to finding the right car, it's important to find the right mechanic/ shop for maintenance and repair. Unfortunately, they're a lot harder to find than a decent car.
My youngest daughter bought a used car and about a year later started having intemittant transmission problems. She took it to 3 diff places, including a dealership and transmission shop. All 3 said she needed a new or rebuilt transmission. She finally took it somewhere else that was highly recommended by friend, and they determined there was a loose wire, and fixed it for less than $50. They took the time to listen to her about what was going on (from someone who actually works on cars--not just some salesman), drive the car, and visually inspect everything before diagnosing the problem.

I went to 3 bowl games this year. The Peach Bowl had the best attendance but still had a lot of empty seats, and yes the game sucked. At the Music City Bowl we bought the cheap seats from Ticketmaster but then the day before the game got an email saying we could upgrade to club level seats for $20, so for $50 each, we got to sit at club level. At the Liberty Bowl they had seats in the endzones (at least I assume there were seats there) covered up. We also met a young veteran with his two sons who had free tickets. He said they were offering free tickets to any veteran. All he had to pay was a $5 per ticket processing fee. Covering seats up, offering free tickets, providing inexpensive upgrades to move people down so the stadium will look fuller, and I'm sure there are a lot of other schemes that were used to get more people (or at least the appearance of more people) into the stadium.

On Chistmas Eve we take turns reading out loud sections of Dylan Thomas's A Child's Christmas in Wales. When the children were young, my wife and I took turns reading; as the children became literate, each of them joined in. It's not a lengthy work, so it doesn't take long to read the whole thing.
|12/19/2018 - 11:33am||As others have already…||
As others have already pointed out, BTN isn't really designed to give objective, independent views on anything. They will provide some facts and statistics, but any commentary isn't going to be hard hitting or ruffle any feathers. The whole Urban Meyer Zach Smith fiasco is a case in point. Almost all the commentary danced around ever calling Meyer out on anything.
And, if you focus on West schools like Purdue and Nebraska, they have been so weak in recruiting lately that by comparison they are doing much better, which in some sense means they are "closing the gap," if by that is meant from being behind by 30-50 spots in national ranking to being behind by 20-35 spots.
|12/15/2018 - 7:19am||Playing a team that is this…||
And playing a team that is this bad doesn't really help improve a Wisconsin or SDSU other than maybe help a player's confidence (Davison's 3 point shooting and Happ's free throw shooting were much better than against Marquette). It certainly helps pad stats and gets all the bench warmers in the game, but except for there being a crowd in the stands, it's nothing like a true game experience.
|12/14/2018 - 9:50am||Talk about cupcake schedules…||
Talk about cupcake schedules, I watched a few minutes of the Wisconsin Savannah State game last night (just flipping to the game during commercial breaks while watching something else). Wisconsin won 101-60 (the score was 69-32 at the half!). Savannah State is the worst college team I think I've ever seen (they were down to just 8 players, I'm not sure why). On offense, they would get across half court, and before even making more that one pass or doing anything resembling an offensive set, someone would jack up a 3, miss, no one around to get a rebound but Wisconsin players. Then at the other end, after more than 3 passes, someone was usually wide open for a shot. There was almost nothing resembling team play, and btw, South Dakota State beat them 139-72 in their previous game.

My next door neighbor had something similar happen to him. He had some chest pains and was just going to rest and ignore it ( he had a stress test a few months prior and there was nothing abnormal). Fortunately, his wife is a nurse and insisted on driving him to the hospital where he was also diagnosed with the widow maker with near 100% blockage. He's doing ok now with the stent, about a year later.

I haven't heard as much the past couple of weeks about how Oklahoma should be in the playoff mix because of their offense. The usual mantra was "who would you least like to play?" I hope the realization now is that no matter how good Oklahoma's offense is, their defense is so atrocious they in no way should be considered a top 4 team.

Of course not being able to see the game while listening, I had no way of knowing if players were misidentified.
|10/31/2018 - 7:29pm||From the details released…||
From the details released about the "independent" report the BOR was using, it sure seemed like they started with their conclusion (to re-instate Durkin) and massage the facts to fit that conclusion. Reports of a toxic environment? Well it depends on what definition of toxic you want to use. Rick Court was an asshole who bullied students? Durkin somehow wasn't reponsible for anything he did. Durkin made some egregious errors? He was new at this head coach thingy, and even though he's paid millions of dollars to be a head coach somehow it was the fault of the AD who hasn't been around for two years.
|10/30/2018 - 4:27pm||If some of the reports are…||
If some of the reports are true, that the president wanted to fire Durkin and the AD, but the BOR threatened him with termination if he did so, this is just the beginning of a giant shit storm (it probably is even if the reports are not true).
It sure looks like the tail is wagging the dog.

|10/25/2018 - 4:17pm||From some of the comments by…||
From some of the comments by the Maryland booster who was blaming Jordan McNair for his own death, McNair barely ate anything that day and didn't drink the gallon of water he was supposed to before the practice. There is ample evidence that players who were over weight were belittled and ridiculed. Rick Court has already resigned, but everything I've read points to his being Durkin's hand picked man either directly encouraging Court's approach or not doing anything to reign him in. To me it's more likely than not that McNair didn't eat or drink more to help keep his weight down as a result of some of the tactics Court was employing. That is a toxic culture and was a contributing factor in McNair's death, and unless Court was acting alone without even tacit approval from Durkin, Durkin is a key part of the toxic culture.
|10/23/2018 - 4:47pm||1. If Shea keeps improving…||
1. If Shea keeps improving and has an impressive last few games, I think he's gone.
2. Full time starter.
3. Shea starts and plays the first half. McCaffrey starts 2nd offensive series of 2nd half. Milton gets cleanup duty.
4. Probably Frost, but as someone mentioned earlier, the expectations for each will be much different. Both coaches benefited at their previous stops from having better players than their conference counterparts. Frost has a better chance of pulling this off (at least compared to the Big Ten West teams) but neither is going to be able to compete at the same level of recruiting with Michigan, OSU, or PSU.

It does seem to be out of desperation. From the story linked in the OP:

Btw, Nelson more than doubled his sack total for the year in one half of play (he had two sacks leading up to the game), and had no sacks after Faalele came in.

One of the areas that Harbaugh and staff are better than most at is finding the best position for players based on their abilities, and especially for those who have NFL aspirations. Of course we will never know how Gentry would have panned out at QB, but he likely would have been buried on the depth chart without a hope of ever sniffing an NFL offer. While he might not be a first round candidate, he definitely now has an opportunity to get selected in the draft and have a productive NFL career.

From Mr Miggle's linked story:
With all the abuse trainer's were giving players for being overweight, it's reasonable to assume McNair ate and drank very little to shave a few pounds for his weigh-in to avoid the bullying. It's too bad the boosters don't seem to understand this, but I'll bet whatever judge or jury sets a dollar amount in the civil suit won't just blame McNair for his heat stroke.
