Brady Hoke does not seem like a guy who is motivated primarily by money. Failing at what you have aspired to do your whole life is hard regardless of how rich or poor you are.
|02/05/2019 - 2:03pm||Michigan will probably start…||
Michigan will probably start 1/10 from three. Whatever deficit or lack of large lead that creates will be annoying at halftime but mid-way through the second half I would expect Michigan's ability to score more consistently to allow them to hold a lead of 6-10 for the rest of the game.

The anti-Auto Bench crowd is no different than the "play the backup QB" crowd. It is an easy argument because seldom do you ever see the alternative when it matters.
There is also a strong likelihood that if Beilein had played Teske and he had picked up another foul early within the next two positions (which I would argue is highly likely due to opposing team strategy and recency bias of officials) then Brian and the auto-bench crowd would be harping on Beilein for leaving him in saying, but of course in this situation you should have benched him!!!

I'm wondering if you would say the same thing in November of 2019 if Michigan's record is 8-3 heading into the OSU game and the primary reason is the D-line being worn out late in games and not getting any pressure.
|02/02/2019 - 11:18pm||Just got back from the game…||
Just got back from the game. Very weird game. Very choppy flow with a lot of breaks. Michigan had their chance with the 5 on 3 and just couldn’t find many good attempts. There are just too many mental errors on D as there were about two other goals Minnesota could have easily had if the puck hadn’t bounced wrong.

About half way through the first half I noticed Wesson splayed on the ground yet again forcing his teammates to play 4 on 5 defense and I thought, that’s the kind of teammate that gets an intentional knee to the nuts in the charge drill during practice.
Stay on your feet and run your large ass down court and play D!

Thanks for this post. It is an interesting subject as I think there is an emotional response from fans regarding who is enrolling early.
I think your assessment is spot on. On average it can help freshman see the field and contribute earlier in their first year, but after that first fall, everyone basically resets now that they know what is going on and the better players float to the top as sophomores, juniors and seniors.

I worry more about the make-up of the CFP selection committee and less about what the media keeps going on and on about.
For the most part, I think it works well in college basketball and there is a similar dynamic in the selection for top seeds.

I don't have an exact count, but there were many times Shea was clearly frustrated as the play clock was running down. Was he mad at the call? The time it took to get it in? Who knows, but there was clear frustration on his part.
The other issue you mention was Shea's inability (either from the coaches or because of him) to change the play once they line up. I don't know if that is true or not, but if true that seems like such a self imposed hindrance.

|01/22/2019 - 1:04pm||I agree many of the takes…||
I agree many of the takes are pure feelingsball and I challenge anyone claiming "BE BETTER!!!" to clearly articulate one concrete example of how it could be better.....HOWEVA...stats don't always tell the whole story. Compare Michigan's rushing game in 2016 vs. 2018
Season rushing stats: for the past three years:
2016: 213.3 yds/game, 4.9 yds/carry, 41TD's
2018: 203.8 yds/game, 4.8 yds/carry, 26TD's
Season totals would tell you Michigan had a slightly better rushing attack in 2016 vs 2018.
Rushing stats against Wisconsin, MSU, OSU, and Bowll for the past three years:
2016: Wisc 130/3.0/1 , MSU 192/4.6/3 , OSU 91/2.1/1 , Bowl 89/2.5/1
2018: Wisc 320/6.7/3 , MSU 183/3.5/1 , OSU 161/4.0/2 , Bowl 77/2.6/0
Looking at how Michigan fared against four of the better opponents shows Michigan had a slightly better rushing attack in 2018 vs. 2016.

|01/21/2019 - 1:25pm||I hate flops. I propose that…||
I hate flops. I propose that a player laying on the floor which causes an offensive player to trip should be called a personal foul. That way the offensive player has a choice when the defender flops: try to shoot over the guy laying on the ground, or basically return the favor and flop themselves drawing the foul.

|01/16/2019 - 11:13pm||I truly do not understand…||
I truly do not understand the willful ignorance of many people on this board regarding the football scheduling.
Michigan is in the same division as PSU, MSU, and OSU. Math and logic dictate you will play two of those three on the road every other year. Look up the historic performance of those three programs and please tell me which two you want on the road in the same year.
If you have any common sense... are not hung up on nostalgia....are not still pissed Michigan had to play at MSU twice in a row over five years ago (under a different AD and coach)...I garauntee you your answer is MSU and OSU.
Had Michigan had to play OSU and PSU on the road either this year or last year, the same people who bitch about the current schedule would bitch about that schedule even more.
Warde is doing the right thing regarding B1G football scheduling by not caving to the stupidity of wanting PSU and OSU on the road in the same year.
|01/16/2019 - 8:25pm||Thank you for the response…||
Thank you for the response. It sounds like you mostly believe the offense maximized it’s potential given the constraints of the players, yet you also believe a change in coach (Gattis) should help the team improve on one of it’s deficiencies (short passing game).
While I mostly agree with your assessment, I still think Harbaugh has a philosophical issue holding this team back in big games. I don’t think he trusts his players in tight situations. I was amazed watching Clemson in the National Championship game. Dabo and his crew trusted their players and gave them chances to succeed (or fail) multiple times in big situations. Multiple times I thought “no way would Harbaugh allow Shea to make a throw like that at this point on the field or in the game”.

I appreciate the post and the sentiment about board posters making generic comments.
I am interested to hear your assessment of why the offense seems to bog down to a point of being a detriment to winning against good teams.
If I am inferring correctly, you are saying it is not play design.
I would agree with this. I think Harbaugh and team do a pretty good job of running similar plays out of different looks as well as running a variety of plays. It was also clear during the OSU game that their linebackers knew exactly where to be on the majority of run plays. The announcers went on and on about it. So if it is not the design of the play which failed to net Michigan the plays needed to be successful, what was it?

|01/15/2019 - 4:14pm||A little analysis of the…||
A little analysis of the Rivals 5 stars:
Total = 30
WHERE THEY ARE GOING?
There are 16 different colleges of choice represented in the top 30. Led by:
LSU = 4
Oklahoma = 4
Alabama = 3
Texas A&M = 3
That's 14 out of 30 going to 4 schools
WHERE THEY COME FROM?
There are 13 different home states represented (caveat - I listed IMG Academy recruits as being from Florida even though that is not really accurate). Led by:
Texas = 6
Florida = 4
California = 4
Louisiana = 3
Georgia = 3
Alabama = 3
That is 23 out of 30 coming from 6 states.
WHAT POSITIONS DO THEY PLAY?
There are 13 different positions represented. Led by:
WR = 5
CB = 5
OT = 4
SDE = 3
That is 17 out of 30 playing 4 positions.
Some random fun info:
- All three Louisiana based recruits are going to LSU (Orgeron going to Orgeron)
- Of the three Alabama based recruits, 2 are going to Auburn and 1 is going to Georgia (Must have been a real ugly bagman fight)
- Of the six Texas based recruits, 3 are going to A&M, 2 to Oklahoma, 1 to LSU (Ok, cool, Hook em there Herman)
- Of the four California based recruits, one each to USC, Oregon, Florida, Clemson (Helton will not be at USC after next season)
- Of the four Florida based recruits 2 to Alabama, 1 to FSU, 1 to Georgia
- Of the three Georgia based recruits, 1 to Michigan, 1 to Clemson, 1 to Oklahoma (Kirby Smart not building fences?)
- Oklahoma has four recruits: 3 WR's and 1 QB. That is three out of the top 5 WR's going to one school. Goodness they are not going to slow down scoring points.
- Of course Alabama signed the only RB.

I do not understand this infatuation with the football schedule. I know everyone still has a stick up their ass over playing at MSU twice in a row. That was on Brandon’s watch and in the distant past at this point.
NEWS FLASH...Michigan will play two away games out of OSU, MSU, and PSU every other year no matter what. End of story. History, both long past and modern, says between MSU and PSU, PSU will be the better team most years. I would much rather have MSU and OSU synched together than PSU and OSU synched together.
Why is this so hard to understand for some people? Hate on Warde all you want, but do it for something that is actually detrimental to the school or one of the teams.

|01/09/2019 - 11:41am||Watching the Championship…||
Watching the Championship game further solidified my belief that scheme may not be as much the problem as decision making.
For the last three quarters I kept thinking there is no way Harbaugh would pass this much with a true freshman QB in a big game.
One particular play call was a pass on 3rd and 12 when Clemson was inside their 15 yard line early in the fourth quarter. The Clemson WR made an amazing one handed catch. I believe they finished that drive with a TD. Yes the WR could have easily dropped the ball and Clemson would have had to punt, but he didn't and they scored a TD eventually. Harbaugh never would have made that call. He would have called a run play and later explained that he trusted his D to get a stop. Guess what, Dabo trusted his D to get a stop also if the WR dropped it, but he also gave his team a chance to completely put Alabama away.

Gary Grant was a 44%+ shooter from three. He only took 2-3 per game, but he would hit the open shot.
I still say, without hesitation, the answer each and every time is Glen Rice. He shot 51% from three his senior year on almost 200 shots!!! He could also rebound. I believe he averaged about 6.5 per game and that was with Terry Mills, Loy Vaught and Mark Hughes on the team.
Could you imagine Glen Rice playing the four for Beilein similar to how he used Glenn Robinson Jr?
